Field hockey player Amber Cody ’18 was recently named a distinguished student-athlete by the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
“While coaching Amber the past four years I’ve seen her not only grow as a player but as a person,” said head coach Jennifer Foster. “She’s served as a strong role model for our younger players – especially our nursing majors – who could see that with focus and commitment you could combine both nursing and playing a sport and do it successfully.”
Cody enjoyed a career year as a senior, leading the Seahawks for the second straight season in scoring (22 goals in 18 games; 1.22 goals per game). The Commonwealth Coast Conference offensive player of the year, she also led the league in assists (nine) while ranking second in goals and points (53). Cody ranks second all-time on the school’s record books for career assists (25), third for career goals (43) and fourth for career points (111).
The distinguished student-athlete award is presented to one female athlete from each of the state’s nine collegiate institutions. The criteria has three key components: The honoree must possess leadership qualities, she must stand as a role model to others, displaying such coveted assets as perseverance, commitment, ethical behavior and academic success, and she must enjoy an above average degree of physical talent.
