The Arboretum at Salve Regina is hosting several public activities on campus starting on April 24 in conjunction with Newport Arboretum Week. The events call attention to the unique urban forest on campus and throughout Newport, which is home to 15 professionally accredited arboreta – more than any city in the world.

Though suffering from significant losses in its population of Gilded Age era trees, the city’s longstanding tradition of iconic public gardens, arboreta and historic landscapes is a legacy destined to thrive for future generations thanks to ongoing education and revitalization efforts.

All activities on Salve’s campus – which is designated as a “Tree Campus USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation and an ArbNet Level II Arboretum – and throughout the city are free and open to the public. Wakehurst Tree Walk

11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, Ochre Court

The inaugural campus tree walk will guide visitors through a curated loop of distinct tree specimens of the arboretum. Tour guides will include Salve’s superintendent of grounds, Michael Chester, arborist Christopher Fletcher of Bartlett Tree, and Salve’s arboretum assistant, Micaela Griffin. Participants will receive tree walk pamphlets as a gift for attendance. The tour will begin at the main entrance of Ochre Court.

Tree ID Student Presentations

12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, McKillop Library atrium

Conservation Biology students, under the direction of Dr. Jameson Chace, associate professor of biology and biomedical sciences, will present their group projects covering the establishment, management and conservation of a certified arboretum. Their presentations will offer a path forward for the Arboretum at Salve Regina to expand its scale toward a Level III accreditation. Light refreshments will be served.

Lecture: “The Art of Scenery: Creating Ocean Drive”

6 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, Bazarsky Lecture Hall

The Ocean Drive district is a cultural landscape of national significance. Established in the late 1860s, the drive was exceptional for the manner in which its planners worked with the natural topography and views of the sea. It opened the entire southern coast of Newport to development, attracting designers such as Frederick Law Olmsted and other renowned landscape architects who created innovative gardens within this unique environment of hills and valleys.

“The Art of Scenery: Creating Ocean Drive” will be presented by architectural historian John Tschirch, who has lectured widely in the U.S. and abroad on architecture, landscapes and historic cities. Reserve tickets at https://artofscenery.eventbrite.com/.

Arbor Day Tree Planting

10:30 a.m. Friday, April 27, Wakehurst lawn

In recognition of Arbor Day, join Michael Chester, Jason Black, Dr. Jameson Chace and others representing the Arboretum at Salve Regina for the planting of a weeping beech tree on the front lawn of Wakehurst. Salve Regina is a Level II nationally accredited arboretum and is the only Tree Campus USA in Rhode Island recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation.

Tree Trolley Tour

10 a.m. Sunday, April 29, Antone Academic Center

Join Christopher Fletcher of Bartlett Tree Experts on a city-wide tour of unique and specialty trees found in the various arboreta in Newport. Dan Barry, a New York Times senior writer and the author of four books, is the 2018 recipient of the Pell Center Prize for Story in the Public Square. Awarded annually since 2013, the prize honors a storyteller whose work has significantly influenced the public dialogue.

Barry, a member of a Providence Journal team that won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting and twice a Pulitzer finalist while at the Times, will receive the prize during a ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, April 23 at the Young Building. “When it was made clear to me that this was not some clerical mistake, I was truly humbled to learn that I was being awarded the Pell Center Prize for Story in the Public Square,” Barry said. “The telling of stories is an essential pursuit; stories help us to navigate the shoals of the human condition. And I am deeply honored to join the past recipients, and to be thought of as a storyteller.”

“Having known Dan since he arrived at The Providence Journal in 1987 and having followed his career since, I can state with authority that his distinguished body of work stands as an extraordinary example of the power of narrative storytelling – not just to shape thinking but also to change lives,” said G. Wayne Miller, a Journal staff writer and Story in the Public Square director.

Barry’s most recent book, “The Boys in the Bunkhouse: Servitude and Salvation in the Heartland,” about men with intellectual disabilities who spent decades working at an Iowa turkey-processing plant while living in an old schoolhouse, was a searing story of exploitation and abuse – and eventual justice and freedom. It was recently named the All Iowa Reads selection for 2018.

His other books include “Pull Me Up,” “City Lights: Stories About New York” and “Bottom of the 33rd: Hope, Redemption and Baseball’s Longest Game,” set in Pawtucket. A collection of Barry’s national columns for the Times, “This Land: Dispatches from Real America,” is scheduled to be published in September.

“Dan Barry’s writing is so moving because it is ultimately about the people he encounters: adult men living with developmental disabilities; a boxer whose last fight has left him with a brain injury; a young girl who as an adult uncovered a horrible secret in her hometown,” said Pell Center executive director Jim Ludes. “Dan is an extraordinary storyteller who captures our minds and our hearts with the stories he tells. We’re thrilled to be able to celebrate his work.”

Panelists with current and former careers in the military will discuss gender issues in today’s armed forces when they participate in the “Warrior Women” series at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

In January 2016, former secretary of defense Ash Carter opened all military positions to women. Since that moment, more than 640 women in the Army and 180 women in the Marines have entered previously closed artillery and combat engineer jobs.

The discussion will explore the status of gender integration in the military. Building on former “Warrior Women” panels, it also seeks to empower young people – particularly women – to pursue careers in national security by shedding light on opportunities available in the armed forces.

Moderated by Jennifer McArdle, assistant professor in the Department of Administration of Justice, the panel will include:

• Andrea Goldstein, co-founder and CEO, Tiresias International
• David Smith, associate professor, Naval War College
