University hosting Newport Arboretum Week activities

Salve Regina is hosting several activities in conjunction with Newport Arboretum Week, which calls attention to the city’s legendary urban forest that is now suffering from significant losses in its population of magnificent Gilded Age era trees.

Newport is the first city in the United States with four professionally accredited arboreta – the Newport Arboretum, the Newport Mansions Arboretum and the Arboretum at Salve Regina and the Frederick Law Olmsted Park and Arboretum.

Public lecture: “The Eden of America: Newport Landscapes Through the Ages”

6 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, Ochre Court, $10, purchase tickets

Award-winning architectural historian John Tschirch will discuss four centuries of landscape design and horticulture in Newport. The preservation of heritage sites of international significance is of foremost interest to Tschirch, who has lectured widely in the U.S. and abroad on architecture, landscapes and historic cities.

Tree stroll

2 p.m. Thursday, April 27, Ochre Court

Tour Salve Regina’s grounds and groves with Mike Chester, the University’s superintendent of grounds, and Scott Wheeler, Newport’s tree warden and buildings and grounds supervisor. Interested participants should meet at the front gates of Ochre Court.

Arbor Day recognition and tree planting

3:30 p.m. Friday, April 28, McLean House

In recognition of Arbor Day, members of the Salve Regina community are invited to this ceremonial tree planting at the home of Sister Therese Antone, University chancellor. The introduction of the Persian Ironwood, or Parrotia persica, will be the first of its type added to the Arboretum at Salve Regina collection. Light refreshments will be served.

Trolley tree tour

10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, Antone Academic Center, register for the tour

Christopher Fletcher of Bartlett Tree Experts will narrate this trolley tour of Newport’s accredited arboreta. Coffee and pastries will be available beginning at 10 a.m. in the Antone lobby, with the trolley departing at 10:30 a.m. Seating is limited and registration is required.

Events recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month

A series of events – ranging from a documentary screening and panel discussion to a yoga and meditation session – are being held at Salve Regina this week in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Featured events are listed below. In addition, members of the University community are encouraged to wear jeans on Wednesday, April 26 in support of Denim Day.

Documentary screening and panel discussion

6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, DiStefano Lecture Hall

“The Mask You Live In” follows young men as they attempt to discover their own identities while navigating the narrow definition of masculinity that is perpetuated in both the media and through societal norms. Panelists will include Salve Regina student-athletes, a training specialist from the sexual assault and trauma center Day One, associate professor Dr. Madeleine Esch and adjunct faculty member Todd Mele. The screening and discussion is sponsored by the Mosaic student newspaper.

“Take Back the Night” yoga

8 p.m. Thursday, April 27, Wakehurst fireplace lounge

Yoga has become a creative and meditative way to comfort victims of sexual violence and help them feel in control of their bodies. This evening of yoga and meditation will be led by Dr. Paula Martasian, associate professor in the Department of Psychology.

Denim Day awareness march

2 p.m. Friday, April 28, Rodgers Recreation Center

In partnership with the Army ROTC program, this march around campus is designed to raise awareness about sexual assault. The march will include opening remarks from Sgt. 1st Class Cornelius Wade. Marchers are encouraged to wear denim and create signs or posters detailing why they are marching.

Dr. Elizabeth McAuliffe named dean of undergraduate studies

Dr. Elizabeth McAuliffe, RSM, associate professor in the Department of Education and interim dean of academics, has been named dean of undergraduate studies at Salve Regina. Her appointment officially begins May 1.

“I am delighted that Sister Betty will be our dean of undergraduate studies,” said Dr. Scott Zeman, provost/vice president for academic affairs. “She brings into the role a wealth of administrative experience and a deep commitment to the University and its mercy mission.”

A Sister of Mercy, McAuliffe has been a teacher and administrator at the elementary, middle, secondary and post-secondary levels for nearly 50 years. She served as the first president of St. Mary Academy-Bay View, an all-girls preK-12 school founded by the Sisters of Mercy, for 18 years. Prior to that, she was a faculty member at Salve Regina, serving as chairwoman of the secondary education department.

“As a Sister of Mercy and a Salve graduate, I am drawn to the mission of Salve and to the desire to serve in a capacity of leadership that impacts the next generation of Salve graduates and the extraordinary faculty and staff who serve our students,” McAuliffe said.

McAuliffe has served as interim dean of academics since the summer of 2016. In that capacity, she has been developing an implementation and assessment plan for the most recent strategic plan. “Working collaboratively with colleagues, I hope that together we can develop an assessment system that reflects our commitment to ongoing academic excellence and rigor and strengthens our commitment to our mercy mission and to the Catholic intellectual tradition that is our foundation,” she said.

McAuliffe earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology from Salve Regina in 1968. She holds a Master of Teaching in chemistry from the University of New Hampshire and a Doctorate of Education in curriculum and instruction from Pennsylvania State University.

Film screening, discussion recognize Holocaust Remembrance Day

In recognition of Holocaust Remembrance Day, a film screening and discussion of the 2016 documentary “Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War,” directed by Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky, will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 24 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

The evening is hosted by the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy in partnership with Touro Synagogue.

“Defying The Nazis” tells the story of Waitstill and Martha Sharps, a Unitarian minister and his wife from Wellesley, Massachusetts who spent nearly two years on life-threatening missions in Europe. The couple left their children behind in the care of their parish to help save political dissidents and Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi occupation across Europe.

The post-film discussion will include:

  • Michael Joukowsky, grandson of the Sharps
  • Rabbi Marc Mandel, Congregation Jeshuat Israel
  • Al Silverstein, Holocaust survivor

SRU Dance presenting “The Time of Our Lives” this weekend

SRU Dance, Salve Regina’s student-run dance organization, will present its spring performance, “The Time of Our Lives,” Friday, April 21 and Sunday, April 23 in the Rodgers Recreation Center. Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

The spring performance will include two dozen dances in styles such as hip hop, jazz, tap, contemporary and Irish step. This semester, the club boasts more than 160 performers, making SRU Dance the largest student-run club on campus.

Admission to Friday’s performance is $3 for general and $1 with a Salve ID, while admission to Sunday’s performance is $5 for general and $2 with a Salve ID. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Andrea Rizzo Foundation, an organization that SRU Dance supports each year.

A Salve Regina graduate, Andrea Rizzo was tragically killed by a drunk driver at age 24. The foundation established in her name fosters Rizzo’s dream of helping children with cancer and special needs through the power of dance.

Newport residents team up with Salve students to develop sidewalk parade

Residents in the city’s Broadway/North End neighborhoods have been partnering with Salve Regina art students and local artists throughout the spring semester to create a hope-themed sidewalk parade, which will step off from the Florence Gray Center at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 22.

Public viewing is available throughout the procession as it winds through the North End neighborhood before ending at Miantonomi Park with a barbecue celebration. The parade is designed to express a unique vision of hope in the community and is part of the fourth annual Newport Daffodil Days Festival. Rain date is April 29.

The Advanced Studio Concepts class taught by Susannah Strong, assistant professor in the Department of Art and Art History, partnered with Olivia Kachingwe and the Newport Health Equity Zone along with several other nonprofit organizations to create the parade. It is a civically engaged art project shaped directly from the visions, skills and creativity of neighborhood residents.

Strong and Kachingwe began organizing behind the scenes for the parade in November 2016, and since early March, a series of collaborative, mentored workshops have been held in an open studio format at FabNewport, where Broadway/North End neighborhood residents have been working together with students to design and fabricate parade features such as banners, signs, streamers and costumes. Additionally, Salve Regina music students will be playing upbeat, New Orleans-style jazz during the parade.

“The notion of a sidewalk parade is something that on any given day a group of people can get together – and it could be five people, or it could be 50 people,” Strong said. “There’s an empowerment and freedom that comes with that and the act of walking together in unity. The level and enthusiasm coming from the community has been incredibly rewarding. It’s been very touching and moving seeing the relationships that are coming out of this and really that’s at the heart of the whole project. The parade is a celebration of those relationships.”

The sidewalk parade is one example of the type of community collaborations being spearheaded by Salve Regina faculty as part of a $173,800 grant from the Davis Educational Foundation to intentionally infuse community engagement and civic learning into the University’s curriculum.

The courses developed by faculty in each of the three years of the grant are built around a significant project developed in conjunction with partners that will fulfill a demonstrated community need and allow students to apply concepts and skills they learn in class. Regardless of discipline, students will be engaging with literature, practice, and reflection on justice, fairness, and social change in relation to their subject matter and their community project.

Salve Regina students host East Bay Area Special Olympics for 36th year

Salve Regina student volunteers will host the Rhode Island East Bay Area Special Olympics on Aquidneck Island for the 36th consecutive year. This year’s games kick off at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, April 23 with opening ceremonies at Gaudet Middle School in Middletown.

As many as 250 athletes representing teams from high schools and communities across Rhode Island will join with more than 200 Salve Regina student volunteers in the event. Athletes will compete in several sports ranging from track to softball.

Among the student volunteers are Salve Regina student athletes, members of SRU Dance (who will make a special appearance) and several other student clubs who are donating their time and efforts to the Olympic Town activities.

“This experience has been one of the most memorable opportunities I have had at Salve,” said Natalia Nardi ’17, president/director of the University’s Special Olympics committee. “It is such a tremendous feeling seeing these athletes and their families filled with so much joy, passion and determination. I am so grateful for this opportunity as president and director to assist in creating and planning this day and work with such amazing individuals. I couldn’t be more excited to see what this year’s games have in store.”

More than 20 seniors majoring in English communications and English literature will give their thesis presentations in the DiStefano Lecture Hall April 21-22. Roundtable focusing on University’s sustainability policies

The University’s stewardship principles and sustainability policies will be the subject of an upcoming roundtable discussion sponsored by the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.

“State of the Campus Environment: Sustainability Goals” will be held at 11:45 a.m. Friday, April 21 in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

Moderated by Dr. Jameson Chace, associate professor in the departments of Biology and Biomedical Sciences and Cultural, Environmental and Global Studies, the roundtable will highlight areas of improvement in the last decade and work on topics of interest for the coming year. Students are encouraged to attend with thoughts, observations, frustrations and visions as the University moves closer to achieving the stated sustainability goals.

Two softball players earn conference honors

Congratulations to softball players Kelsey Boarman ’17 and Amanda Riley ’19, who recently received honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

Boarman was named pitcher of the week after posting a 0.66 ERA in 21.1 innings of work. Two of her four appearances were complete game victories, against Roger Williams University and the University of New England. For the week, Boarman gave up just two earned runs and struck out 10.

Riley was named player of the week after batting .545 (6-for-11) with four RBI and three runs scored. She had hits in all but one of the Seahawks’ contests and had multiple hits in two of them. Riley also had two stolen bases.

Salve Regina (16-9, 11-1 CCC) has three conference road dates this week and hosts non-league Eastern Connecticut State University at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 20 at Toppa Field.
