The planning board of SRyou: Student Exposition 2017 – an all-day event featuring the work of Salve Regina students – has issued a call for proposals.

Scheduled for Wednesday, March 29, SRyou is an exposition showcasing students’ work and experiences, offering all undergraduate students the opportunity to share their curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular involvements.

Presentation formats include:

• Poster board
• Table display
• Performance art
• Presentation
• Workshop or training session
• Display case

All undergraduate students are strongly encouraged to submit proposals, which will be accepted through Sunday, Feb. 26.

Female students interested in learning how to be better, more effective leaders are invited to participate in the prestigious National Education for Women (NEW) leadership program this summer. Along with the Office of Student Affairs, the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will sponsor up to two women to attend the program.

NEW Leadership New England is a leadership training program designed to educate and empower young women and give them the skills to be part of the next generation of women leaders. NEW Leadership New England will host its annual five-day summer program for undergraduate women June 4-9 at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, on the campus of Saint Anselm College.

The program will include workshops for students to actively develop leadership skills such as public speaking and networking, as well as presentations from politically active women throughout New England. Participants will also benefit from faculty-in-residence, a group of women public leaders who serve as mentors for students throughout their stay.

“It was a great way to make friends, learn about new techniques, network and stay connected,” said Ming Fen Congdon ’18, who attended last summer’s program. “If you are looking for a program that shows to how to be a leader in the political field, then apply for this program. It was an amazing experience.”

As part of its investment in leadership development, the Pell Center will cover the $650 cost to attend this program for up to two women from Salve Regina.

Students who are interested in applying should complete an application and submit it to Jennifer Jensen, associate dean of students, by Wednesday, March 1. A panel will review applications and select up to two women to put forth to the main applicant pool by the March 10 deadline.

The Center for Student Development is inviting current freshmen, sophomores and juniors to apply for First Year Transitions peer mentor positions for the 2017-2018 academic year. Ideal candidates are students who are seeking to develop and utilize leadership skills in order to assist fellow students.

Having already experienced their first year at Salve Regina, peer mentors have a good understanding of what it’s like to be a student and are aware of available experiences, support services and programs. Peer mentors serve as leaders and resources to students enrolled in the First Year Transitions course and co-teach the course with the instructor.

As part of the program, peer mentors enroll in FYT130: Mentor Practicum during the fall semester. The course provides support and training and assists peer mentors with self-assessment and reflection.

The Office of International Programs, in collaboration with the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, is inviting current freshmen to submit applications to participate in the Language House during the 2017-2018 academic year.

The Language House living learning community is an opportunity for students to live in a small house setting on campus with other students interested in the French and Spanish language and cultures. Students of any ability level are welcome to apply.

Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs), selected by the Fulbright program in a competition held in their home countries, travel to Salve Regina to live and teach during the academic year and facilitate the programming at the Language House. This year, Salve Regina welcomed Marc Andrade from Spain and Emmanuel Sanseau from France.

Language House residents, along with other interested students from outside the house, watch movies, participate in language tables, make meals and take part in cultural activities, all while practicing the target language. Many Language House residents also volunteer with the FLTAs to deliver a six-week after school program in French and Spanish to Pell Elementary school students each semester.

“For the past three years, the Language House has provided myself and others with the opportunity for not only linguistic exchange, but cultural as well,” said Christopher Nova ’17. “I believe both are essential for one to be culturally competent.”

The Office of Residence Life is seeking Resident Advisors to help lead the campus community during the 2017-2018 academic year. Successful candidates will have the desire and commitment necessary to make a difference in the lives of their peers.

Resident Advisors represent the Office of Residence Life as key staff members, working under the direct supervision of area coordinators. RAs complete an extensive training program that offers them an opportunity to develop valuable interpersonal and organizational skills.

Information sessions will be held:

• Monday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Office of Multicultural Programs
• Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Reefe Hall first-floor common area
• Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 5 p.m. in Miley Hall, Room 012 (garden-level classroom)
• Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in the William Watts Sherman House first-floor common area

The selection process consists of an application (including a resume and two letters of recommendation) and an interview. Students may apply for RA positions through the student leadership application, which is available online through Thursday, Feb. 16.
