Gonzalez, LoCicero named men’s lacrosse captains

Jake Gonzalez ’17 and Nick LoCicero ’17 will serve as captains of the men’s lacrosse team for the 2017 season.

“Nick and Jake are outstanding leaders,” said head coach Patrick Cooney. “Over their first three years, they have respectively fostered a positive winning team culture that has helped develop our student-athletes. They achieve in academia, athletics and the greater community.”

For the last three years, Gonzalez has taken the majority of the draws for the Seahawks. From 2014-2016, he took 617 faceoffs, winning 333; he currently ranks third all-time in Seahawk faceoff win percentage history at 54 percent.

“Jake has grit,” Cooney said. “He has been getting good reps for three years and I know those experiences will help the team in 2017. I love watching him compete for the ground ball.  He brings the necessary energy, toughness and poise required by his role.”

Last season, LoCicero became the all-time leading point scorer in the program’s history, and he currently holds several all-time, season and single-game Seahawk records. In three seasons, he has recorded 205 points (61 goals and 144 assists), with 80 points during the 2016 season.

“Nick has developed into a complete lacrosse player,” Cooney said. “He has worked hard to become a scoring threat in addition to his vision and passing ability. We look forward to seeing him continue to make those around him better.”

The Seahawks begin the 2017 season Feb. 18 at Emmanuel College.

Student Activities seeking Orientation leaders for Class of 2021

The Office of Student Activities is seeking students with high energy and school spirit to serve as Orientation leaders for the Class of 2021.

Orientation leaders are positive role models that help new students transition to the University community. As one of the first points of contact for new students, Orientation leaders are trained provide accurate information about Salve Regina and its services, and to answer questions and ease the concerns of new students and their families.

Students interested in serving as Orientation leaders are encouraged to attend one of two upcoming interest meetings, which will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24 in Wakehurst, Room 204 and 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 in Wakehurst, Room 101.

Students may apply for Orientation leader positions through the student leadership application, which is available online through Thursday, Feb. 16. Applicants must be available for training during the spring 2017 semester and must be available to work throughout the month of June.

Intramural sports program announces winter offerings

Salve Regina’s intramural sports program, which is open to all students, has announced its winter offerings. Teams are now forming for competitive A-league basketball, less competitive B-league basketball and indoor soccer. A minimum of four teams must be signed up in order for the leagues to run.

Registration will be open from Monday, Jan. 23 through Friday, Jan. 27, and the intended start date is Sunday, Jan. 29. No teams will be accepted after Friday morning. Times and scheduling will be announced once roster signups have concluded.

Faculty-student researchers publish study on collegiate sports injuries

An article co-authored by Dr. JD Swanson and two of his students that examines and compares injuries sustained in the martial arts versus other NCAA contact sports has been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. The goal of the researchers is to help alleviate concerns from a risk management perspective for collegiate clubs.

“Comparison of Shotokan Karate Injuries Against Injuries in Other Martial Arts and Select NCAA Contact Sports” appears in The Sport Journal, the world’s largest online peer-reviewed journal of sport. Annually, the scholarly sport journal receives more than 500,000 website visits. The topic of the Salve Regina researchers is particularly relevant as karate is one of five new sports added to the 2020 Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee.

The work was a collaboration between Swanson, associate professor and chairman of the Department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences, and two of his students, Adam Barragan ’12 and Jacquelynn Morrissey ’17.

“From experience, we find that university risk management, who often do not know very much about Shotokan karate, tend to assume it is a high risk activity and place it in extremely high risk categories based on little to no evidence,” Swanson said. “By placing it in these categories, the effective practice of karate can be impossible for students, if it is allowed at all. We argue that this perspective is incorrect and provide evidence that the injury risk in practicing traditional Shotokan karate is actually very low and comparable to other sports. This manuscript collates the current literature on injury rates and provides recommendations to the safe and effective practice of Shotokan karate.”

The study originated as the senior thesis topic of Barragan, who earned his B.S. in biology and is currently enrolled in his second year of medical school at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. He will be completing his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation in 2019. Morrissey, the recipient of the Bottari Family Scholarship, will graduate with a B.S. in biology in May.

“One of the nice strengths about Salve is the amazing ability of faculty to interact with students,” Swanson said. “This is a great case in point, where we looked into a relevant topic that was slightly outside of my research field but relevant to the experience that the students wanted to gain, we researched the topic as a team, and we wrote it up and published it in a place where it will be used by the wider global community. This is what faculty/student mentored research is about.”

The Sport Journal is an electronic, peer-reviewed scientific journal addressing current issues in sport, published with the goal of advancing sport knowledge through research and expertise. Encompassing multiple facets of sport, including sports management, sports coaching, sports studies, sports medicine and sports fitness and health, The Sport Journal seeks to provide readers with up-to-date information comprising advances in all areas of sport. Published articles include both detailed scientific methods and guided conclusions geared towards sports professionals, allowing for immediate application in the field. It is published by the United States Sports Academy.

Swanson graduated from Penn State with a Ph.D. in integrative biosciences (ecological and molecular plant physiology option). His master’s thesis was completed at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. At Salve Regina, he teaches a variety of classes, including Human Anatomy and Physiology for non-majors and Developmental Biology. He has a research lab that works primarily on cell-cell communication using raspberry and blackberry prickles, human stomach cancer cells and algal blooms as models.

He has been involved in the sport of Shotokan since 1980, when he began his training at the age of 6. Swanson has founded several Shotokan clubs along the east coast, including at Salve Regina upon his arrival as a faculty member in 2011. Having achieved the rank of Godan (5th dan) in 2013, Swanson graduated from the ISKF instructor training program, earning his license as an official instructor, examiner and judge. In 2016, he was appointed to direct the National Collegiate Karate Association and the East Coast Collegiate Karate Union.

Salve Regina introduces streamlined Student Leadership Application

Salve Regina has implemented a new application process for student leadership positions. Students who are applying to be a new Orientation Leader, International Student Mentor, Resident Advisor, FYT Peer Mentor, Service Advocate and/or Service Plunge Fall Facilitator for the 2017-2018 academic year will use the Student Leadership Application.

The application will be available through noon Thursday, Feb. 16.

The Student Leadership Application streamlines the process, making it easier for students to apply for multiple leadership positions. There are supplemental questions required for each individual position, which populate on the application after students select the position(s) for which they are applying.

Students who currently hold one or more of the aforementioned positions will reapply through their respective offices rather than using the Student Leadership Application. Questions about re-applications should be directed to individual offices.

The Center for Student Development and the offices of Community Service, International Programs, Residence Life and Student Activities welcome all questions and look forward to a new applicant pool for their respective positions.

Students who are interested in learning more about the Student Leadership Application are encouraged to attend the information sessions and tables listed below.

Seahawks land 32 on academic all-conference squad

The football team has landed 32 student-athletes on the New England Football Conference’s 2016 academic all-conference team.

To qualify for the team, a player must have completed three semesters at the same institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. “To have this many men on our academic all-conference team, it further exemplifies our team commitment to do everything in their power to work to become champions on and off the field,” said head coach Kevin Gilmartin. “It makes me proud to be their head coach.”

Summer 2017 study abroad application deadline approaching

Students interested in participating in summer 2017 study abroad programs in the Dominican Republic, New Zealand or Oxford should submit their applications by Feb. 1.

The application and instructions are available online. The application requires students to write a brief statement of purpose, provide their academic evaluation and basic biographic information. Students should give consideration as to how the credits offered for each program will fulfill requirements in their major, minor or general studies requirements or should identify electives that need to be fulfilled.

Dominican Republic: June 1 to July 31

This program is intended for – but not limited to – administration of justice, health care administration and management, nursing and social work majors seeking to develop their Spanish language skills and knowledge of the cultures of the Hispanic Caribbean. Students will complete two courses while living with families, enabling them to augment their Spanish skills while enriching the cultural knowledge they gain in the classroom through first-hand experience. Placements will be based on major so that students can participate in an authentic work environment while using and developing their Spanish.

New Zealand: May 18 to June 13

This program will provide first-hand experiences of the impact humans can have on the native flora and fauna in the diverse geographic landscape of the world’s youngest nation. Students will learn through continuous discussion and instruction from the primary instructor, along with lectures from professionals throughout New Zealand. They will survey the natural flora and fauna of New Zealand, try to identify its respective geographies, and discuss the impacts of the geography and human influences on the flora and fauna and its relation to this genetic diversity.

Oxford: May 27 to June 24

This program allows students to earn six credits by choosing two courses from a variety of offerings taught by faculty from Salve Regina, St. Clare’s College and Oxford University. The program emphasizes experiential learning, with almost daily trips to Oxford sites such as Port Meadow, Christ Church College and the Eagle and Child pub. Ranging beyond the city and the university, students will travel to London and Bath and will take in a play at an exact replica of the Globe Theater, experiencing drama as it was enjoyed in Shakespeare’s day.

Center for Business Outreach connects students with public sector

The Center for Business Outreach has opened a new conference room in the O’Hare Academic Building, Room 127, allowing for increased collaboration between students, faculty, alumni and the business community. State-of-the-art technology, including video and teleconferencing, is available through several media platforms.

The Center for Business Outreach connects classrooms with the greater business community by linking business owners, civic and nonprofit organizations, entrepreneurs and the public sector with students, faculty and alumni from the Department of Business Studies and Economics.

Since the center’s creation in fall 2014, approximately 590 students have worked with more than 80 businesses, receiving hands-on experience by creating business plans, social media analysis, marketing strategies and customer surveys.

“Working with the center gave me the chance to experience real life work that cannot be taught in a class setting,” said Una Doherty ’16. “From writing a business plan to market research, this gave me a great opportunity to learn firsthand how to overcome problems and create solutions.”

The center has introduced a series of drop-in sessions, and roundtables with business leaders are planned throughout the academic year. Networking events with entrepreneurial organizations such as the Newport County Chamber of Commerce and the Center for Women & Enterprise help students build relationships throughout their college career.

Fifty students spending spring semester away on four continents

Fifty Salve Regina students representing nearly every major at the University will spend the spring 2017 semester studying abroad at program locations spanning four continents, 12 countries and 23 partner institutions.

“This spring, we have students studying in an interesting array of destinations that have not been commonly chosen at Salve Regina in our study abroad history, such as Chile, Peru, Portugal and Germany,” said Katie McCormack, assistant director of study abroad. “While England, Ireland, Italy and Spain continue to attract the most Salve Regina students for semester study abroad, we continue to see increased interest in Australia and Costa Rica – destinations that rank high nationally for study abroad participation rates.”

Salve Regina students who study abroad are increasingly choosing program options that are immersive and provide challenging experiences outside the traditional classroom setting, augmenting their intercultural learning outcomes. Homestays are a key element of that trend, particularly for those students developing language skills.

Other students are participating in internships or service learning opportunities as part of their full time credit load. Social work major Emma Buckley ’19 will work with a youth development organization in Cusco, Peru to help create welcoming and safe environments in after-school centers and transitional homes for local at-risk youth. English communications major Collin Travassos ’18 will utilize his internship placement organized by St. Mary’s University in London to increase his understanding of corporate culture in the United Kingdom and further develop essential professional skills.
