The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will explore whether the average American citizen is adequately informed during a roundtable discussion scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2 in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

The founders believed that the American republic needed an educated and engaged citizenry to prosper – one that understood the basic structure of America’s government, kept up to date on significant public issues and made informed decisions when voting for its leaders.

Dr. William Leeman, associate professor in the Department of History, will moderate the roundtable, which will explore questions such as: In America today, is the average citizen informed? If not, how should we address this issue as a nation?

Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff, and lunch is provided. As space is limited, those interested in attending should RSVP to pellcenter@salve.edu.

The Angel Trees, from which individuals pick a tag and purchase a gift item for a local child in need, have once again appeared throughout campus. All members of the Salve Regina community are invited to participate in the Angel Tree program.

Angel Trees are located in McAuley Hall, McKillop Library, Mercy Center for Spiritual Life, Miley Hall, O’Hare Academic Building, Rodgers Recreation Center, Wakehurst and the Center for Adult Education in Warwick. Gifts will benefit children in need through Child & Family, Community Baptist Church, Confetti Foundation, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, Salvation Army, Women’s Resource Center and the Tashirat Orphanage in Mexico.

Tags on the trees list a child’s name, age and wish. Donors are asked to choose a tag from the tree, purchase a gift and return it in a gift bag or unwrapped to the Office of Community Service in Wakehurst, Room 201 before 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15. Please make sure to attach the label to the gift.

On #GivingTuesday, people everywhere – including retailers, charities, online organizations, community centers, individuals, families and more – will come together with one common purpose: to help others and incentivize ways to give more, give smarter and celebrate the spirit of giving.

Salve Regina has joined this international celebration of generosity, and encourages members of the University community to make their annual gift on this day. Whether they support The SALVEfund, scholarships or a favorite Seahawk team, gifts impact the campus and the lives of students.

“We already have a day that acknowledges giving thanks, and we have two days to acknowledge deals and shopping, so this is a day to kick off the season of giving and encourage philanthropy,” said Alison Bognuda, annual giving officer, operations.

Salve Regina is encouraging alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends to consider giving back and supporting the University in celebration of #GivingTuesday.

#GivingTuesday started after a group of friends, partners and philanthropy experts, led by the 92nd Street Y, came together to find ways to promote and celebrate the great American tradition of giving. Thought leaders in philanthropy, social media and grassroots organizing joined to explore what is working in modern philanthropy and how to expand these innovations throughout the philanthropic sector.

Salve Regina will host a TEDx university event next spring and is seeking proposals from prospective speakers. TEDxSalveReginaU is scheduled for Saturday, March 25, 2017 and will be held in the DiStefano Lecture Hall.

TEDx events feature short, carefully prepared talks, demonstrations and performances that are idea-focused, cover a wide range of subjects and provoke conversations that matter.

Students, faculty and staff, along with members of the general public, are all welcome to submit proposals for TEDxSalveReginaU. Applications are due Monday, Dec. 5.

“We are aiming for people who have new informative ideas, compelling arguments or theories, new research or breakthroughs, or unusual problems and solutions,” said Araz Khajarian ’18, who is organizing the event.

Prospective speakers should be prepared to deliver their talk without notes or a script and ensure that their talk is edited and rehearsed with the TEDxSalveReginaU team. Proposals should have one specific outcome that is clearly stated.
