Social Work Club, WGS program organizing coat drive

The Social Work Club has partnered with students in the women, gender and sexuality studies program to organize Salve Regina’s annual campus coat drive.

Students, faculty and staff are invited to donate gently worn winter coats in all sizes. Hats, gloves and scarves are also needed. Donations can be dropped off in Mona Dube’s office in the O’Hare Academic Building, Room 101.

Donations will benefit St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Newport and Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island in Providence. St. Paul’s will distribute the donations during its annual Buy Nothing Day (the Friday after Thanksgiving) to members of the Aquidneck Island community who are in need of winter gear.

Donations will be accepted through Friday, Dec. 2, but coats that can be donated prior to Thanksgiving are especially welcomed. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated, so that no family member is left without a warm winter coat this year.

Athletics
Three field hockey players earn all-conference nods

Three Seahawks have been named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference’s all-conference team for field hockey: Forward Amber Cody ’18 (first team), midfielder Erin Gendreau ’17 (first team) and midfielder Sarah Thompson ’17 (second team).

Cody leads the league in scoring with 49 points, 19 goals (tied for first) and 11 assists (second). She produced five game-winning goals in the regular season, four of them against conference opponents.

“Amber stepped into a more offensive role this season and has really been the spark for us on offense,” said head coach Jennifer Foster. “Her stick work and speed gets our offense going and she is someone we will need to step up as we enter post season play.”

Team captains Gendreau and Thompson have combined for 13 goals, including three game winners from Gendreau and three penalty strokes from Thompson.

“Erin and Sarah have been the backbone of our midfield this season,” Foster said. “They work great together and do a great job of controlling play for us. We will look to their experience and leadership as we play in the CCC semis.”

Salve Regina (9-9, 5-7 CCC) earned the fourth and final playoff spot in the conference’s postseason, and will play at top-seeded and defending champion University of New England on Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Annual Thanksgiving food drive aims to feed 70 families

All offices, departments, clubs, teams, residence halls, classes and organizations, along with students who want to form a team of their own, are invited to participate in the Office of Community Service’s annual Thanksgiving food drive. The goal is to feed 70 families in 2016.

Suggested non-perishable items include:

  • Stuffing mix
  • Gravy
  • Cranberry sauce
  • Instant potatoes
  • Pasta/rice
  • Canned juices, soups, meats, fruits and vegetables
  • Evaporated milk
  • Pudding/Jell-O
  • Frosting
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Pancake mixes and syrup
  • Beans and lentils
  • Muffin/cake mixes
  • Hot/cold cereals
  • Tomato sauces and products

The Office of Community Service will provide laundry baskets for all registered groups to fill. Each basket should contain enough items to feed a family of five. Baskets must be delivered to Wakehurst, Room 201 by noon Thursday, Nov. 17.

Tuesday, Nov. 1: Emmanuel Church Soup Kitchen

Volunteers are needed from 4:30-6:30 p.m. to set up, work and clean up the soup kitchen. This site is located on the trolley line.

Saturday, Nov. 5: Aquidneck Land Trust Race for Open Space

Volunteers are needed from 9:15-11:30 a.m. to help with the Aquidneck Land Trust’s Race for Open Space. Duties include race registration, helping at street crossings along the race course and spotting/directing runners along the race course. Van transportation is provided.

Tuesday, Nov. 8: St. Paul’s Church Warm up Wednesday

Volunteers are needed from 6-8 p.m. at the Mercy Center to bake sweet treats for St. Paul’s Church’s Warm Up Wednesday program. Transportation is not provided for this on-campus event.

Friday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 19: Emmanuel Church Holiday Fair

Volunteers are needed to help set up for Emmanuel Church’s annual holiday fair. Three-hour shifts are available. Time slots are 3-6 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. on Friday, and 7-10 a.m., 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. on Saturday. This site is located on the trolley line.

Monday, Nov. 28 and Tuesday, Nov. 29: Salvation Army bell ringing

Volunteers are needed from 5-8 p.m. to ring the Salvation Army bells at the Stop & Shop on Bellevue Avenue. This site is located on the trolley line.

Mercy Center hosting “Art of Meditation” workshop Nov. 5-6

The Mercy Center for Spiritual Life is hosting a weekend workshop exploring perspectives on the art of meditation. Scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5 and Sunday, Nov. 6, the workshop will draw from time-honored Eastern wisdom traditions and modern-day scientific research to present practical ways of integrating principles of meditation, Taoism and Zen Buddhism into everyday life.

Open to all undergraduate students, the workshop will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. It will be held in McAuley Hall, Room 103.

The workshop will be led by Jesse Harding, a fifth-degree black belt and director of Villari’s Martial Arts Center in Middletown. Participants will learn and practice different types of meditation such as lying, seated, standing, walking and moving. Harding will also present yoga, tai chi and qigong exercises for health, well being, stress reduction, clear thinking and peace of mind.

Harding has been teaching the martial arts for more than 20 years. He holds degrees in philosophy, psychology and religious studies in addition to an M.A. in holistic counseling and CAGS in creative and expressive arts from Salve Regina. Harding is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Religious and Theological Studies.

Four Seahawks earn conference honors

Congratulations to the following student athletes, who recently received all-conference honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference:

Men’s cross country: Jay Brennan ’17

Team captain Brennan shared the scholar-athlete award for men’s cross country with Greg Whitney from Eastern Nazarene College. Brennan, a nursing major, tied for the academic honors in balloting among the conference’s coaches.

Men’s soccer: Matthew O’Donnell ’19 and Jared Warren ’18

O’Donnell and Warren were named to the second team for men’s soccer. O’Donnell tied for second in scoring for Salve Regina with seven points on two goals and three assists. Warren led the Seahawks in scoring with nine goals and one assist (19 points) while producing two game-winning goals.

Women’s cross country: Victoria Varone ’17

Varone was named to the all-conference team after leading Salve Regina to a second-place finish in the conference championship. She placed sixth in the field of 107 runners to lead the scoring for the Seahawks, finishing the 6K course in 23:40.

The annual employee Benefits/Wellness Fair, featuring health screenings, raffles and refreshments, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2 in Ochre Court.

Campus Activities Board hosting dodgeball tournament Nov. 4

The Campus Activities Board invites all undergraduate students to build a team and compete in its dodgeball tournament, scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 in the Rodgers Recreation Center.

Dodgeball has many variations, but generally the objective is to eliminate all members of the opposing team by hitting them with thrown balls, catching a ball thrown by a member of the opposing team, or forcing them to move outside the court boundaries when a ball is thrown at them.

CAB’s tournament will be a double-elimination bracket style. Tournament teams should be co-ed and include eight players, all of whom must be Salve Regina students.

Prizes include:

  • First place – Gift cards for each player
  • Second place – Salve Regina gear
  • Third place – Edible Arrangement

The deadline to register a team is Tuesday, Nov. 1. Teams will assemble in Rodgers at 6 p.m. Friday to check in, review the rules and choose a team color and name.

Green Dot training aimed at ending violence on college campuses

Earlier this month, 22 Salve Regina faculty and staff members participated in a four-day training session with Green Dot, a bystander intervention strategy program aimed at ending violence on college campuses and communities.

Green Dot is specifically aimed at ending sexual violence and domestic/dating violence. The 22 participants were trained as Green Dot facilitators and can now pass their knowledge along to other members of the Salve Regina community.

“Students will benefit from the training by learning specific strategies for safely intervening if they witness a circumstance in which someone is at risk of getting hurt – through words, bullying or direct violence,” said Dr. Barbara LoMonaco, vice president for student affairs, who participated in the training. “For instance, students could help by creating a distraction, calling someone else to intervene or checking in on someone to see if they are safe.”

Green Dot was founded by Dorothy Edwards, who developed the program as a more proactive, educational way to tackle all types of violence, mainly on college campuses. Taken from the Green Dot website, Edwards writes: “The story of Green Dot is one thread of many burgeoning around the country, fueled by the same impatient insistence: This violence has got to stop.”

Faculty and staff who have completed the training will have the tools to teach the Salve Regina community the Green Dot curriculum. As time goes on, training sessions will be offered to students, who will then be equipped to intervene on behalf of others.

Montminy-Danna, Zuccarelli to discuss biofeedback research

Dr. Mary Montminy-Danna and Dr. Lisa Zuccarelli, recent recipients of the University’s Antone Award for Academic Excellence, will discuss their research during a presentation on Monday, Oct. 31.

“An Interdisciplinary Approach to Empowering Survivors of Domestic Violence Through Stress Reduction” will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the McKillop Library’s special collections room. Montminy-Danna is an associate professor in the Department of Social Work and Zuccarelli is an associate professor in the Department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences.

Their pilot study of female survivors of intimate partner violence aimed to design an interdisciplinary model of stress reduction through the use of safe conversation, structured interviews and the use of a commercial biofeedback program. Biofeedback is used to train individuals to override the body’s stress responses, such as increased blood pressure and heart rate. Controlling these can restore parasympathetic response, bringing calm to the body.

This approach is not typical of most domestic violence services, which usually provide counseling, advocacy and shelters. The opportunity to discuss with these women the amount and source of their stresses and their current coping mechanisms created an emotionally supportive environment for performing this study.
