Women’s track and field names three captains
Head coach Matt Hird has named Olivia Conway ’18, Megan Jenkins ’18 and Victoria Varone ’17 captains of the women’s track and field team for the 2017 season.
“These three exceptional student-athletes have been elected by their peers because of their talent, their athletic citizenship and their ability to inspire and support,” Hird said.
Conway has been a mainstay of the throwers during her first two years as a Seahawk. Specializing in the shot put and the javelin, she captured second place in both events in the 2016 conference championship as the Seahawks swept to victory.
“Jenkins was chosen by her teammates for her ability to lead by example,” Hird said. “Her constant improvement in the 400 meters inspires her fellow sprinters, who see in Meg how doing everything right and always maintaining a positive and supportive attitude can produce significant performance gains.”
Varone is one of only two active Seahawks who have broken 19:00 at 5,000 meters, and is a New England Division III qualifier at 10,000 meters. An accomplished cross country runner, she shares the Salve Regina program records for combined team time at 5,000 meters and 6,000 meters.
