Announcing the Top 10 Stories of 2023 on SALVEtoday
2023 was another eventful year at Salve Regina, and the news stories posted on SALVEtoday highlighted the University community in a variety of ways. As the year 2023 comes to a close, the newspaper is sharing the Top 10 Stories of the Year from 2023’s coverage.
These news story rankings are based on the overall traffic they received throughout the year of 2023. Read below to see which stories were viewed the most by the world — stories that include alumni who are serving their communities in various ways, academic achievements that made the University proud, and other important events or hirings across the campus.
1. Salve students will make history performing on Broadway in ‘Children of Eden’ concert
“For the very first time in the history of Salve Regina’s theatre program, 22 students will be performing on Broadway in a concert production of “Children of Eden,” a musical by the famed Stephen Schwartz, at the Lincoln Center in Feb. 2024. “When I found out that Broadway wanted our Salve cast to perform at the Lincoln Center with famous Broadway actors, I did not understand what I was being told,” said Matthew Desorcy ’24, a theatre arts major…'”

2. Shane Bowes serves and protects as Connecticut state trooper
“Growing up in Leicester, Massachusetts, Shane Bowes ’20, ’22 (M.S.) always wanted to get into state police law enforcement. After attending a student trooper program in high school through the American Legion and Massachusetts State Police, he decided to fully commit to his lifelong career dream and pursue higher education to achieve this goal….”

3. Salve Regina awarded 8 Ph.D, DNP degrees during graduate commencement
“Salve Regina awarded seven Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) and one Doctor of Nursing (DNP) degrees to candidates during the graduate commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 18. These included students in the doctoral humanities program, the doctoral program in international relations and the doctoral nursing program….”

4. Spring Week features celebrity speaker Jennette McCurdy, concert with Ty Dolla $ign and Hot Chelle Rae
“Jennette McCurdy published her recent memoir ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’ in August 2022, and since then she has become a beacon for mental health awareness and an inspiration to those struggling with personal battles. In a book celebrating resiliency, McCurdy uses transparency and humor as she dives into her struggles as a former child actor….”

5. Zachary Russell ’23, cultural historic preservation major, registers childhood home as historic
“Zachary Russell ’23 is a cultural historic preservation (CHP) major with minors in sociology, anthropology and film at Salve Regina. Russell grew up in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, in a house unlike many others. He lives in a 1928 bungalow with very little changes made to the house since it was built. Russell has lived there since he was born, and as he grew older started working on the house, fixing things and becoming more aware of preservation….”

6. Meet the three valedictorians for Class of 2023
“Salve Regina has three valedictorians representing the Class of 2023, which is a first for the University. Samantha Bond ’23, Theo Modla ’23, and Mairead Nee ’23 are all psychology majors, and they are honored to be representing the Department of Psychology at Commencement on Sunday, May 21. ‘The psychology department has passionate professors, meaningful assignments, and the ability to set students up for success in the post graduate world,’ Nee said….”

7. Lynne Mello named chief marketing and communications officer
“Lynne Mello, a marketing and communications professional with more than 15 years of experience both in private industry and higher education, has been appointed as Salve Regina’s new chief marketing and communications officer. She will begin her duties on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Mello joins the senior leadership team with Dr. Kelli J. Armstrong, president of Salve Regina, and will collaborate with stakeholders across campus in advancing the core values of the university’s Strategic Compass while also working to expand the institution’s national visibility….”

8. Sara Birse ’20 traded Seahawk Radio for SiriusXM
“Sara Birse ’20, who got her degree in English communications with minors in French and marketing, knew Salve Regina was the school for her once she stepped onto the gravel at Ochre Court. Birse now works as the music programming coordinator for SiriusXM in Nashville, Tennessee. From the garden floor of Gerety Hall to the broadcasting studio at SiriusXM, Birse attributes her dream career to the time and experiences she had while at Salve Regina….”

9. U.S. News survey ranks Salve for best undergraduate teaching, innovation, value and social mobility
“Salve Regina University’s overall ranking among the best institutions of higher education in the United States climbed to 27th in the Regional Universities (North) category, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best Colleges survey, which was made public on Monday, Sept. 18. Salve was also recognized by U.S. News as a top university for Undergraduate Teaching at 13th, Most Innovative at 22nd, Best Value Schools at 41st, and Top Performers on Social Mobility at 79th….”

10. Sean Sullivan named director of athletics at Salve Regina
“Dr. Sean Sullivan, who has served as associate vice president of student affairs and director of athletics at The Catholic University of America since 2013, has been hired as the new director of athletics at Salve Regina, effective Jan. 30. Sullivan replaces Jody Mooradian, who retired after serving in the position since 2016. “I have long thought highly of Salve Regina and have imagined it to be a uniquely special place,” Sullivan said….”
