Building on suggestions from faculty and students, Dr. Kelli J. Armstrong began developing the annual tradition of McAuley Day in 2019 to provide an opportunity for members of the University community to celebrate their ongoing commitment to one another, and to highlight those qualities that set Salve apart from other institutions. The concept began as “Salve Surprise Day” in the fall of 2020, and the idea continued to evolve into the officially named “McAuley Day” in 2021.

“As we look back on the incredible accomplishments we’ve achieved over the past 75 years, we also look forward – to advancing our University mission and to cementing new traditions,” wrote Dr. Kelli J. Armstrong, president of Salve Regina, in a message to the University community. “One such tradition is McAuley Day, which gives us an opportunity to celebrate our ongoing commitment to one another and those qualities that set the University apart from other institutions.”

Tuesday, Sept. 27, has been designated as McAuley Day.

This is a time for students, faculty and staff to gather together, take a pause in our normal work and enjoy a barbecue, food trucks and music on campus. This year, the University is also combining McAuley Day with our annual celebration of Catherine McAuley’s birthday.

While the University will remain open for business, classes will be canceled through 5:30 p.m. All  students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in the activities listed below. Students who have clinicals and student teaching assignments should plan to honor those commitments, but when they return to campus, they can join in the McAuley Day activities.

Salve Regina and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), both mercy institutions, have partnered to offer a pathway leading to a bachelor’s degree from Salve Regina and a Master of Social Work degree from USJ. The collaboration responds to the increasing demand for social work professionals.

“We are so excited to partner with USJ to provide our students with a pathway to enhance their mercy education with an MSW,” said Dr. Nancy Schreiber, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Salve Regina. “A Salve/USJ graduate will be best prepared to be a leader in the field of social work with mercy at the heart of all they do.”

Through the partnership, up to 10 seats will be reserved for qualified Salve Regina students who meet program requirements and are accepted into USJ’s MSW program with the intention to enroll on a part-time or full-time basis. Salve Regina students graduating with a BSW who maintain an overall 3.0 GPA or higher and submit positive recommendations supporting their readiness to enter the advanced year MSW curriculum and field practice setting are eligible.

“The collaboration with USJ will provide our students with a deepened set of skills, knowledge and values necessary to address the many challenges of the world today,” said Dr. Mary Montminy-Danna, chair of Salve Regina’s Department of Social Work. “Our BSW graduates will have the opportunity to continue their professional development steeped in a mercy-first tradition that embraces a compassionate and just approach to change.”

Both Salve Regina and USJ were founded by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, and the two institutions have also partnered on a 3+3 bachelor’s and Pharm.D. program. Together, the partnerships respond to the current and projected workforce needs of pharmacy and social work. Given the alignment of the two institutions, both partnerships bring “mission to market” in an innovative and practical manner for students.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Salve Regina University to respond to a growing critical need for social workers of diverse backgrounds,” said Dr. Madeline Perez, interim dean of the School of Interdisciplinary Health and Science at USJ. “They are an ideal partner with whom we share mercy values, a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion allowing us to extend our ability to service students across New England.”

Perez said the collaboration is committed to and values diversity in the recruitment of eligible students, including persons of diverse backgrounds – defined as students who are members of racial or ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ populations, students who are economically disadvantaged, provide geographic diversity to the student body, or who contribute to other unique and valuable characteristics to the student body.

The Hon. Elena Kagan, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, discussed the struggles of a deeply divided nation, the need for clear distinction between policy and law, public confidence in the court, and the importance of precedent during a wide-ranging conversation at Salve Regina.

Kagan was interviewed by Jim Ludes, vice president for strategic initiatives, before an audience of 1,000 students, faculty, staff and invited guests. Her visit comes as the University kicks off a year-long celebration of its 75th anniversary.

“It’s impossible for any citizen to look around and not understand that this country is facing challenges, not the least of which is that the country is so divided,” Kagan said in response to a question about threats to American democracy. “The question of how do we work ourselves through that, not just as judges, but how all citizens work through that, is an important one.”

Kagan said it should almost go without saying that people who disagree with each other can be friends, which elicited a round of applause from the audience. She referenced her friendship with her “hunting buddy,” former associate justice Antonin Scalia.

“Justice Scalia was a master at building personal friendships across disagreements and he used to say said if you take it personally, you’re in the wrong job,” she said. “And I think it’s true for life. We should be able to separate these things.”

Kagan talked about her many mentors at every stage of her career, from her mother to her senior thesis advisor who taught her how to write, to the judges she clerked for when she graduated law school – Abner Mikva of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and Justice Thurgood Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court during the 1987 term.

Kagan, who served for four years in the Clinton administration as associate counsel to the president and then as deputy assistant to the president for domestic policy, was asked about the distinction between policy and law.

“It’s really important that there be a divide between the two,” she said. “I think the court does best when it keeps to the legal issues, when it doesn’t allow personal political views, personal policy views to affect or infect its judgment. The worst moments for the court have been times when judges have allowed that to happen. The very worst moments have been times when judges have essentially reflected one party’s or one ideology’s set of views in their legal decisions. That just can’t and shouldn’t happen.”

While there was no mention of the Dobbs vs. Jackson case or the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, Kagan said the court’s power of judicial review should not be scrapped, though she thinks that power needs to be exercised with a great deal of modesty and restraint.

“The court should think twice and then maybe should think twice again before doing so,” Kagan said. “The court shouldn’t be wandering around just asserting itself into every hot-button issue in America. And it especially shouldn’t be doing that in a way that reflects one ideology or one set of political views over another.”

And she offered her opinion about why the standard for overturning precedent should be very high. “Law gives rights to people that people ought to be able to rely on,” she said. “A second reason is it is an expression of judicial humility and believe me when I tell you, the judges need to be reminded sometimes the virtues of being humble.”

Kagan also said that when a court stops acting like a court is what makes people afraid. “When you see the composition of the court change and then the whole legal system being kind of up for grabs, and legal rules getting reversed here and there, that’s what makes people worry and that’s what ought to make people worry that something else is going on here other than applying legal principles fairly and consistently,” she said. “It just doesn’t look like law when the new judges appointed by a new president come in and start just tossing out the old stuff.”

Regarding the public’s confidence in the Supreme Court, Kagan said the most important thing the court can do is go about its business. “The thing that builds up reservoirs of public confidence is the court acting like a court and not acting like an extension of the political process,” she said.
