Second annual Salve Day of Giving raises more than $185,000

More than 740 members of the Salve Regina community – alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff and friends – came together March 24 for the second annual Salve Day of Giving, raising a record $185,593 for initiatives that support students in all aspects of their campus experience.

“We are grateful to everyone who gave of their time and talent to make Salve Day of Giving such a success – students, faculty, advocates, staff, volunteers,” said MaeLynn Patton, chief advancement officer. “Everyone worked in concert, resulting in a true celebration of all that is Salve.”

Funds raised from Salve Day of Giving will be put to use immediately in support of student scholarships, academic programs, clubs and athletics, and throughout the campus community.

“Knowing the Salve community the way I do, I am not surprised by the outpouring of generosity displayed on Salve Day of Giving, but I am moved,” said Dr. Kelli J. Armstrong, president of Salve Regina. “The level of support displayed by the Salve family, our eagerness to give back to the place we call home and our enthusiasm for helping our students build a foundation to last a lifetime are everything that makes Salve, Salve.”

Highlights from the day include:

  • Support from 268 alumni, 210 parents and a record-breaking 171 faculty and staff.
  • Initiatives for inclusion, scholarships, sports and the arts all surpassed their fundraising goals.
  • Passing the goal of 725 donors with the final tally of 742.

The campaign was further magnified by those who issued challenges that inspired donations and increased the impact of Salve Day of Giving. These challenges were offered to parents, alumni, students, faculty and staff, and represented $78,000 in support.

“As a student leader at Salve, I see firsthand how impactful the donations from our alumni, friends and families are to the students and campus life,” said Jennifer Quinn ’22, psychology major. “To take part in Salve Day of Giving was a fulfilling experience filled with a great sense of community and Salve pride.”

English and Communications seniors to give thesis presentations

Fourteen seniors majoring in English communications, literature and creative writing will give their thesis presentations on Saturday, April 2. Featured will be students’ examination and in-depth analysis of a variety of cultural topics drawn from popular contemporary novels, classic literature, television shows, movies, journalism and social media, among others.

Salve Regina continues diversity efforts through new mission statements, summit

The Salve Regina community recently came together to prepare mission and vision statements that reflect the concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). As an institution devoted to its mercy mission, these statements reflect the heart of the University community’s efforts to expand on these principles and ideals.

Below are the official statements.

Salve Regina University strives to cultivate belonging values through diversity, equity and inclusion in order to foster a welcoming culture for our staff, faculty and students, as well as the wider community.

With the above ideals in mind, the University is about to host its second annual Mercy Summit on Equity and Inclusion on Friday, April 8, in the O’Hare Academic Building. This full-day event is sponsored by the Presidential Commission on Equity and Inclusion, and it is the commission’s hope that the summit will see wide participation from the campus community.

The Mercy Summit on Equity and Inclusion will feature a variety of sessions that provide opportunities to interact on a range of engaging topics — including the keynote speaker, Dr. Regine Jean-Charles, who will discuss “Notes on Belonging: Making Justice the Center of DEI” at 9 a.m. in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

Theater program will perform “The Drowsy Chaperone,” a comedic Broadway musical

The Department of Music, Theatre and Dance is proud to announce that the theatre program will be offering a performance of the Broadway musical “The Drowsy Chaperone.” The production will run on Thursday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, April 2, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. All members of Salve Regina’s community, as well as the public, are invited to attend.

Tickets are $15 general admission; $10 for Salve Regina faculty and staff, seniors and military; $8 for non-Salve Regina students; $5 children 12 and under; free for Salve Regina students with ID. All seating is general admission, and reservations are encouraged. Proof of vaccination or negative test result is not required for entry. Masks are also not required but are certainly not discouraged. To purchase tickets, please go here.

“The Drowsy Chaperone” is a comedy that pokes fun at musical theater from the 1920s, along with its stereotypes and presumptions. The plot revolves around a man — called The Man in the Chair — in New York who is feeling isolated but lifts his spirits by playing music from his favorite musical. While the characters come to life in his living room, The Man in the Chair wryly comments on the music, story and actors. It’s a charming musical within a musical experience.

“The musical opened in 2006 on Broadway, and when I went to see it, I don’t remember ever laughing so hard,” said Tara Brooke Watkins, assistant professor of the theater program and director of the show. “I thought it was just one of the best musicals in a long time, and I am really surprised it doesn’t get done more often.”

There are 35 students involved in the production — including the cast, crew members and student musicians. The cast includes students like Thomas Froessel ’23, a double major in theater arts and dance. Froessel plays the lead character The Man in the Chair, and he elaborated on the character a little more.

“The Man in the Chair serves as the show’s narrator. He walks the audience through the show and makes some cynical quips and snarky remarks, as well as shows audience what theatre can do to just one person,” Froessel explained. “Personally, theatre has saved me in so many ways, so many times. Being given the ability to draw from that experience in a character that feels so much like myself is truly so exciting.”

Froessel also pointed out that the writing in “The Drowsy Chaperone” is smart.

“There are jokes written in this show that take deep research to understand, but even at the surface level of just hearing the sentence, you can’t help but chuckle because you would never think you’d hear a sentence like that strung together,” he said.

As the country continues to slog through a pandemic, the importance of having a good laugh can’t be underestimated, according to Watkins.

“Just being in an audience filled with laughter is one of the most healing experiences to have and kind of gives us strength to … return to life,” said Watkins. “That’s the theme of the play, but I think that actually happens when you sit and watch the show.”

Confronting a Silenced Past: Black Catholic Nuns in the United States History

On Tuesday, April 5, Dr. Shannen Dee Williams, associate professor of history at the University of Dayton will offer the next Critical Concern Lecture and Dialogue virtually on “Confronting a Silenced Past: Black Catholic Nuns in the United States History.” 

In this talk, Dr. Williams will consider how the master narratives of women’s religious life and Catholic participation in the Black freedom struggle fundamentally change when the lives and experiences of African American nuns are taken seriously. Dr. Timothy Neary, chair of the Department of History, will be the McAuley Institute’s Faculty Respondent.

Dr. Williams is an historian of the African American experience with research and teaching specializations in women’s religious and Black freedom movement history. She is the author of the forthcoming book “Subversive Habits: Black Catholic Nuns in the Long African American Freedom Struggle” from Duke University Press.

Voices of Mercy: What Matters to Me and Why? Luncheon Speaker Series

The luncheon speaker series continues with its fourth and final speaker, Dr. Kelli Armstrong, president of Salve Regina, on Wednesday, April 6. This luncheon will be held in the State Dining Room of Ochre Court at noon.

“‘Voices of Mercy: What Matters to Me and Why?’ offers the University community a glimpse into the interior movements of one’s heart and journey,” said Salve Regina community member. “It is a true testament to listening to the small voice of vocation and saying yes to becoming more than one imagines.”

Mercy Critical Concern Faculty Collaborative on Earth

After the success of the Mercy Critical Concern Faculty Collaborative on Race panel discussion in March, the Collaborative on Earth will also offer a panel in-person during Earth Week.

On Thursday, April 21 at 4 p.m., the Earth Collaborative will be offering a panel discussion featuring the research, teaching and University initiatives of McAuley Scholars: Dr. Tom Arruda, Dr. Heather Axen, Dr. Jim Chace, Dr. Craig Condella, Dr. Jen McClanaghan, and Jodie Goodnough.

Topics include raising energy awareness at Salve Regina, arboretum planning, environmental justice on Rose Island, and more.

Timothy Jaeger ’21, philosopher, writer and Dietrich von Hildebrand enthusiast

Few students can pinpoint the moment they found their passion, but Timothy Jaeger ’21 easily recalled a high school western civilization class’s use of the Socratic method that sparked his love for philosophy. “That stuck with me more than anything,” he said. “The idea of being able to think about different perspectives and do a bunch of these thought experiments.”

It is this love and passion for philosophy that drew Jaeger toward his academic path at Salve Regina.

Exploration of philosophy, SRyou Student Exposition

Graduating from Salve Regina with a double major in philosophy and political science, as well as a minor in economics, Jaeger has never been one to shy away from epistemological thought. He was a Department of Philosophy award recipient and president of the Philosophy Club at Salve Regina.

Looking back on his days at Salve Regina, Jaeger attributed his proudest accomplishments to his SRyou Student Exposition presentations. SRyou is a day for undergraduate students to share their work and experiences with peers, faculty, staff and community members – exploring their own interpretation and thought towards a given topic.

“To be able to present my original ideas before a bunch of people – that benefited me on so many levels,” he said. Jaeger said that presenting during SRyou was memorable because it was his last opportunity to share his original ideas and writing while at Salve Regina. Jaeger gave his final SRyou presentation on the philosophical topic of truth.

“That one was a direct predecessor to what my senior thesis for philosophy was about, which was intuitionism,” he said.

Publication of philosophy article

Jaeger’s piece on intuitionism, which focused on the German Roman Catholic philosopher Dietrich von Hildebrand, was published in the October 2021 edition of  “Dialogue,” the undergraduate journal of Phi Sigma Tau, the international philosophy honor society. The article is titled “Dietrich von Hildebrand as an Intuitionist Philosopher.”

He credits much of his success and knowledge to Dr. Peter Colosi, associate professor of in the Department of Philosophy, and Dr. Clark Merrill, associate professor in the Department of Political Science. “Dr. Merrill introduced me to so many new perspectives and new ideas,” Jaeger said. “And without Dr. Colosi, I wouldn’t know who Hildebrand was.”

Jaeger is quick to share details about the German philosopher and his theories of intuition, establishing a clear sense of knowledge, passion and love for the topic. Writing in the 20th century, Hildebrand produced works in every major field of philosophy, including ethics, aesthetics, philosophical anthropology and social philosophy.

“[Hildebrand] is in a very interesting gray area,” Jaeger said. “He doesn’t necessarily say that we intuit with our emotions, but our emotions are not necessarily detached from intuition.”

Working to improve the environment

While taking a gap year and awaiting responses from graduate schools, Jaeger has been exploring his passion for nature and the environment. He spent six months working with AmeriCorps building trails within the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference.

“It’s something different, and I’ve been able to kind of unplug in a way,” Jaeger said. “But I’ve also done very meaningful work for something that I’m passionate about.” He also continues to expand his knowledge and understanding of Hildebrand by participating in readings with the Hildebrand Project, which is dedicated to promoting the philosopher’s thought and legacy.

Salve Day of Giving is Thursday, March 24

The University community will unite for the second annual Salve Day of Giving on Thursday, March 24. This new tradition is focused on a shared cause – celebrating and supporting every aspect of the student experience.

The inaugural Salve Day of Giving benefited more than 70 student clubs and organizations, which used their gifts to support many aspects of campus life, including open mic nights, speakers’ series and much more.

However, t­he impact of Salve Day of Giving extends beyond clubs and activities to encompass the entire student experience. Through The SALVEfund, donors can direct their support to scholarships, diversity and inclusion initiatives, the arts or academic programs.

Throughout the day, Salve Day of Giving donors can increase the impact of their gift though challenges supported by generous members of the community. If the University reaches its goal of 725 donors, an anonymous donor will make a $50,000 gift. Gifts of any size will move the University closer to meeting the challenge. Additionally, there is a special giving challenge for parents and for alumni — and a few surprises along the way.

Here on campus, Salve Day of Giving offers additional opportunities to engage. Participants can “pie” a professor or have a communal cup of coffee, each with a gift of $5 or more.

All Salve Day of Giving supporters will receive a limited-edition laptop sticker. Members of the University community can also help by sharing the link to Salve Day of Giving and encouraging friends to help unlock challenge grants. 12-hour SalveTHON event will raise money for children’s hospital

Salve Regina’s annual SalveTHON is set to run on Saturday, March 26, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., encouraging all to come and help support a significant cause.

All money raised during the 12-hour dance marathon goes to the Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. The hopes of SalveTHON is to help families pay for treatments, innovations for the hospital, new equipment, research and more.

SalveTHON is a part of the Miracle Network Dance Marathon, a nationwide program that is made up of colleges all over the country working to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The program has raised of $300,000,000 for children’s hospital since their start in 1991.

“We stand for 10 hours because we stand for those who can’t,” said Ashley Cannata ’22, co-president for SalveTHON.

A group that participated in SalveTHON in 2019.

“During my first SalveTHON event, I met some of the miracle kids from the hospital, and I was able to make some really strong connections,” Connata explained. “There was a moment where they were able to share their stories and how SalveTHON … helped them through treatment.”

While fundraising happens continuously throughout the year, any member of the Salve Regina community can donate now or the day of the event. All members of the community are invited and encouraged to come participate in the marathon on Saturday, March 26.

“Something I think everyone should take away from SalveTHON is that even small contributions make a huge difference,” exclaimed Cannata.

The 12-hour event will be held in Ochre Court, shifting themes and activities hourly, filling every moment with something that keeps participants occupied and happy. The event ends with the Power Hour—the final hour where participants can dance the night away.

The Hasbro Children’s Hospital holds a dear place in the heart of the Salve Regina community, so all are encouraged to come out and dance on March 26. Attend a vigil in support of Ukraine

This week will mark an entire month since Russia began its present invasion of Ukraine and an assault on this country’s democracy. As Salve Regina and the rest of the world continues to watch the death and devastation in Ukraine unfold with great grief, the University will be honoring the sacrifices the Ukrainian people have made in their fight for freedom.

The Salve Regina community is holding a vigil in support of Ukraine tonight on Wednesday, March 23, at 5:30 p.m. in front of Ochre Court. This vigil will be a time to come together at a University community to mourn, lament and pray for peace. The University will take time to hold these global brothers and sisters who are suffering as their homes are taken, their lives are lost and their freedom is stolen.

The vigil will be put on by the Student Government Association and the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life.

Salve Regina’s families invited to Story Time with the Easter Bunny

The Office of Alumni, Parent and Families will not hold its annual Easter Brunch and Egg Roll again this year, but they’ve decided to put on another virtual event with the Easter Bunny. On Sunday, April 3, at 11 a.m., Salve Regina families can join online for a Story Time with the Easter Bunny event. This event is co-sponsored by Sigma Phi Sigma. To register, go to the Eventbrite.

During the event, Sigma Phi Sigma students will be reading stories with the Easter Bunny. Coloring sheets will also be emailed to registrants in advance for children to color as they listen to the stories. Participants should register by Saturday, April 2, at the latest to ensure that they receive the coloring pages. Current staff, faculty and students can join the event, as well as alumni.

Sigma Phi Sigma is a National Mercy Honor Society in which members hold themselves to high standards of scholarship, fidelity and service. Some of Sigma Phi Sigma’s most notable events are helping at convocation and the Governor’s Ball, as well as Easter brunch event by welcoming guests, hosting the egg roll and making crafts with the children.

“Volunteering for the Alumni Easter Egg Roll was one of the most fun experiences I had while at Salve,” said Alley Harkness ’20, who was a Sigma Phi Sigma member. “All of the alumni were so kind, and all of their children were a joy to have on campus. It was a great way for alumni to stay connected to the University and for current students to meet alumni and see what the future could hold.”

Normally, funds raised through the Easter Brunch and Egg Roll event would benefit the Vision of Mercy Scholarship, but the Story Time with the Easter Bunny is free this year. If anyone would like to donate towards the scholarship, they can still do so.
