While it is a different kind of Christmas here at Salve Regina this year, it can still be one filled with festivities. Salve Regina’s community is invited to welcome the holiday season to campus with the event A Celebration of Light and Spirit on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 4-5 p.m. outside of O’Hare Academic Building.

While the 125 people who will be able to attend the live event are limited to Salve Regina community members, the event will be held virtually via WebEx so that anyone in the public can participate if they’d like.

A Celebration of Light and Spirit will start with a short multifaith prayer reading followed by the annual Christmas tree lighting. Hundreds of luminaries will shine near McAuley Hall, warming up Salve Regina’s campus with their light. The paper lanterns will be placed on the grass near the entrance of McAuley and lined along the drive near the Misto Gatehouse. People in attendance must practice social distancing, and they are free to walk around and see the luminaries, which will stay lit all night. To dedicate a luminaria with a tribute in honor or memory of a loved one, follow this link.

Attendees are invited to stop by Our Lady of Mercy Chapel to view a display called Nativities of the World that will feature a variety of gorgeous nativities. The nativities will be displayed from noon on Monday, Dec. 7, to Wednesday, Dec. 9, after the 12:15 p.m. mass.

For anyone who wishes to give back in the spirit of Christmas, donations of hats, gloves and scarves will be welcome — which will be donated to members in the Newport community who are in need during the holidays. There will be multiple drop-off locations for these items across on campus, which will be easily accessed on the evening of the event.

The entire event will also be hosted on a WebEx livestream for University members who cannot attend and for the general public. Please check the Calendar for updated information on where to find the link for the livestream.
