Community service opportunities: May

Hoping to complete some service hours before the end of this academic year? The Office of Community Service has several opportunities available during the month of May. To register for one of the service opportunities listed below, or to view all service opportunities, visit the Community Service website. 

Saturday, May 5: Preservation Society of Newport County
Volunteers are needed at the Green Animals Topiary Garden from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. to help local Girl Scouts perform a variety of horticultural and nature-inspired tasks. Example activities include leaf rubbing, songs, creating a dream garden station, plant walks, photo assignments, tree sketching and more. Transportation is not provided.

Saturday, May 5: Mission Drive
Volunteers are needed from 9-11 a.m. to help with the mission drive on Calvert Street in Newport. This service site is located on the trolley line.

Sunday, May 6: Norman Bird Sanctuary
Volunteers are needed from 7:30-11:30 a.m. to help with Norman Bird Sanctuary’s annual Birds & Breakfast event. Van transportation is provided.

Monday, May 7 through Friday, May 11: End of Year Drive
Volunteers are needed in Wakehurst to collect and sort donations for the end of year drive. Volunteers may sign up in shifts: 10 a.m. to noon and/or 1-3 p.m. On Friday, May 11, math-savvy volunteers are also needed to check out customers at the presale event. Transportation is not provided.

Saturday, May 12: End of Year Drive
Volunteers are needed in Wakehurst to help with the end of year drive. Shifts are 6-8 a.m. (setup), 8-10 a.m. (checkout), 10 a.m. to noon (checkout) and noon to 2 p.m. Transportation is not provided.

Tuesday, May 15: Senior Day of Service at God’s Community Garden
Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help at the gardens. Volunteers may sign up in shifts from 10 a.m. to noon and/or noon to 2 p.m. Transportation is not provided.
