Community Service seeking faculty, staff volunteers for Adopt-a-Spot
All members of the Salve Regina community – including faculty and staff – are invited to join the Office of Community Service in maintaining its new Adopt-a-Spot location in Newport’s Eisenhower Park.
The location consists of flowerbeds surrounding the fountain in Eisenhower Park, a historic location situated in the middle of Washington Square. Faculty and staff are invited to assist with mulching and maintenance of the flowerbeds throughout the summer.
Melanie Tomlinson, Salve Regina’s AmeriCorps VISTA member, led the project to restore the flowerbeds, which were previously maintained by the Newport Horticultural Society until it disbanded in the mid-1990s. The initiative has received support from Newport’s Washington Square Advisory Commission, which has ongoing plans to restore Eisenhower Park.
Mulching/maintenance schedule
- Mulching: Mulching and cleaning of the fountain will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 7 and Wednesday, July 8.
- Maintenance: Watering and weeding will take place three times per week, so members of the University community are encouraged to consider supporting this initiative on a regular basis. Click here for the maintenance schedule.
Members of the University community can register for mulching and maintenance sessions online through the service opportunities webpage. The Adopt-a-Spot location is conveniently located on the trolley line, near the Jane Pickens Theater stop.
