Feminine hygiene product drive benefiting homeless shelter
The Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Club and students in the course WGS100: Introduction to Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies are sponsoring a feminine hygiene product drive through Friday, Dec. 1, with an expo on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
The drive is collecting feminine hygiene products such as boxes of tampons, pads, menstrual cups and liners of any size or variation, which will be donated to the McKinney Shelter in Newport. Collection boxes are located in Antone Academic Center, McAuley Hall, Miley Hall, O’Hare Academic Building and Wakehurst.
Tuesday’s expo will be held from 5-8 p.m. in Wakehurst. Sponsored by many campus organizations and clubs, the expo will offer information about feminine hygiene issues and products.
Due to their high cost, feminine hygiene products are desperately needed by homeless and low-income community members. This drive is inspired by projects like The Period Project, and organizations like Amenity Aid of Rhode Island, which identify that these types of products cause great stress on vulnerable populations.
To arrange for a direct donation, or for more information, contact club president Kaylyn Bettencourt at kaylyn.bettencourt@salve.edu or Dr. Anthony Mangieri, coordinator of the women, gender and sexuality studies program, at anthony.mangieri@salve.edu.
