McKillop Library sponsoring series of workshops

The McKillop Library will once again sponsor “Library Lessons,” a series of workshops open to all members of the Salve Regina community, throughout the fall semester. Topics range from learning APA and MLA citation styles to avoiding plagiarism.

Members of the Salve Regina community may register for the “Library Lessons” series online at http://library.salve.edu/librarylessons.

“Introduction to Today’s Library Services”

  • 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10 in the McKillop Library, Room 106
  • 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16 in the McKillop Library, Room 106
  • 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Center for Adult Education in Warwick

This workshop is designed to introduce students, faculty, staff and other interested members of the Salve Regina community to using the resources and materials available in the library. Topics include searching the catalog, borrowing from other libraries and using the resources from off-campus.

“How to do Research”

  • 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Center for Adult Education in Warwick
  • 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 in the McKillop Library, Room 106

Trying to find and decide on a topic can often be complicated and frustrating. This workshop will provide participants with the basics and tools to choose and investigate topics and create effective search strategies. Participants will learn how to search the premier database Academic Search Complete.

“Learn APA Citation Style”

  • 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30 in the McKillop Library, Room 106
  • 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 at the Center for Adult Education in Warwick

This workshop will explain the American Psychological Association (APA) citation and format style that is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences.

“Learn MLA Citation Style”

  • 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1 in the McKillop Library, Room 106
  • 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 at the Center for Adult Education in Warwick

This workshop will explain the Modern Language Association (MLA) citation and format style that is most commonly used to cite sources within the humanities and liberal arts.

“Avoiding Plagiarism”

  • 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8 in the McKillop Library, Room 106

Plagiarism is a term that is heard over and over again, but do you really understand what it is, how to avoid it and what the repercussions of it are? This workshop will clarify why you need to cite sources, when and how to use a source appropriately.  Topics covered include paraphrasing, quoting and summarizing.

“Conducting a Literature Review”

  • 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 in the McKillop Library, Room 106

A literature review is an account of what has been published on a topic by accredited scholars and researchers. This workshop will provide participants with the tools to find and analyze the relevant resources in a literature review.

“Basics of RefWorks”

  • 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 in the McKillop Library, Room 106

This workshop will provide the basics on how to use RefWorks, an online research management tool, to manage and store variously gathered information and to generate citations and bibliographies.
