Nine baseball players earn conference honors

Nine baseball players were recently named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference all-conference team: Tristan Dacey ’19, Colton Eremian ’19, Sean Healy ’17, Ryan Kelly ’16, John Militano ’18, Alex Perry ’18, Cory Poplawski ’17, Zack Smith ’19 and Christian Vargas ’18.

A first team designated hitter, Dacey shared the league lead in home runs (6) heading into the postseason, and was second on the team with 35 RBI.

A third team third baseman, Eremian had four home runs, 61 total bases and a .555 slugging percentage during the regular season.

A third team reliever, Healy made nine appearances on the season (10.2 innings), striking out 12 batters and earning three saves.

A first team outfielder, Kelly is the Seahawk record holder in at bats (563), runs scored (190), triples (19) and times hit by a pitch (69). Heading into the postseason, the two-year captain was tied for third in the league in home runs (4) and second in stolen bases (18), and his 47 runs scored led all conference players.

A third team second baseman, Militano led the league in stolen bases (25) and was tied for second in runs scored with 43.

A second team first baseman, Perry hit three triples and 16 doubles in the regular season. He also scored 35 runs and ranked second in the league in RBI (40).

A third team pitcher, Poplawski started six and completed five games for a 3-3 won-loss record while posting a 2.84 ERA. In four conference starts, he had a 2.77 ERA and 10.38 strikeouts per game.

A first team outfielder, Smith played both corner positions. He had the most base hits (56) of any Seahawk and ranked third on team with 34 RBI. Smith added a dozen doubles, a triple and two home runs on the season.

A third team catcher, Vargas caught 31 games this season and upped his batting average to a steady .300 on the season. He had 20 assists and threw out four attempted stolen bases.

Salve Regina finished as the No. 4 seed in the regular season. The Seahawks will continue their bid for the tournament championship at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 10 against a TBD opponent.
