The New England Environmental Education Conference and the Sustainable Schools Summit have joined forces to host “Achieving Environmental Literacy: Health, Environment, Curriculum.” Featuring more than 40 workshops, a keynote lecture from acclaimed author David Orr and tours of Rhode Island’s energy efficient schools, the conference will be held at Salve Regina Nov. 1-3.

The conference will bring together teachers, non-formal educators, students, administrators, facilities managers, architects and other community members from across New England, providing a unique opportunity for cross-sector networking and collaboration to increase environmental literacy and help create and maintain effective, safe and healthy green schools in the region.

Associate professor of biology and biomedical sciences Dr. Jameson Chace, along with Madison Van Orden ’14 and Margaret Kane ’12, is scheduled to present a workshop titled “Sustainable STEM Education Through Hydroponics.” The session will provide an introduction to STEM curriculum and active inquiry-based education through hydroponic gardening and will cover topics such as botany, healthy diets, sustainable local agriculture and economics.

The 2013 New England Environmental Education Conference and Sustainable Schools Summit is sponsored by the Apeiron Institute for Sustainable Living, the Rhode Island Environmental Education Association and the New England Environmental Education Alliance. For more information, visit www.neeea.org.
