John Salute ’19 was recently named defensive player of the week for football by the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

Salute led the Salve Regina defense in its 26-20 non-conference victory over Montclair State University as the Seahawks christened their newly renovated home at Toppa Field. He had seven tackles in the contest, including four tackles for a loss for a total of 27 yards. Salute also had 1.5 sacks.

One of his key stops came on fourth-and-2 approaching halftime as he helped stall a promising drive for the opponent. In addition to his seven tackles, Salute also broke up one pass attempt. The Seahawks defense only allowed four yards in the fourth quarter and never allowed the Red Hawks to cross the 50-yard line in the final quarter.

Salve Regina (2-0) travels to face Dean College at noon Saturday, Sept. 16 in a non-conference matchup.
