The Office of Career Development is offering weekly career tips to encourage all students to stay on top of their career planning as the semester moves ahead with Virtual Salve. We’ve got a couple more suggestions for things you may want to work on that will help you move forward in your professional preparation.

See our tips below, and as always please feel free to schedule an appointment with a career advisor through Handshake. We are happy to work with you remotely via phone or video.

Weekly Tips from Career Development

Tip #1: Search for internships

Did you know that students who participated in an internship are statistically more likely to receive a job offer upon graduation than students who did not? Whether you know what you want to do when you graduate or you’re still trying to figure that out, an internship is a great way to test out a potential career and gain some practical hands-on experience in your field.

If you’re not sure where to start looking, we’re here to help. Check out our Jobs and Internships page to help you get started, then schedule an appointment with a career advisor through Handshake.

Tip#2: Prepare for virtual interviews

With everything happening in the world, remote interviews via phone and video conferencing are becoming commonplace. Virtual interviews can often be even more nerve-wracking than in-person interviews, because you don’t receive the same level of non-verbal feedback. To help you prepare for your next interview, regardless of the medium, we recommend practicing with us in a mock interview.

The more you practice answering common interview questions like, “Tell us about yourself,” or “Give us your biggest strengths and weaknesses,” the more naturally these answers will come during an actual interview. We’ll help you with everything from practicing common questions, to setting up your virtual interview space, to finding the perfect interview outfit.

If you’re ready to start polishing those interview skills, check out our Interviewing and Networking page to help you get started, then schedule an appointment with a career advisor through Handshake.

Also, if you’ve been interviewing virtually already, take a picture of your home interview set up and your best interview outfits and tag us on Instagram @salvecareer! We can’t wait to see your interview looks!

Each Thursday, SALVEtoday will provide tips for success as well as success stories of current students and alumni to encourage and uplift the University community during this time of remote living and learning. #salvesgotthis #salvesuccess
