Seniors highlight business planning capstone projects with real-world clients

Salve Regina is in the midst of celebrating the tireless efforts of the Class of 2020, despite the challenges that the University experienced during Virtual Salve. Today, seniors in the Department of Business and Economics will be showcased.

After a semester of client meetings, instructor guidance and team breakout sessions, the senior business capstone projects culminated in 30-minute detailed presentations of a business plan to local entrepreneurs brought in by the Center for Business Outreach. Eight business plans were presented to two panelists comprised of area business professionals, alumni and the business owners. Following the student presentation, the panelists critique the business plan elements and question the students for 15-20 minutes.

By developing and presenting a comprehensive business plan on behalf of a real-world client, students draw upon all elements of their business and economics curriculum and demonstrate written, oral, analytical, critical thinking and project team skills.

With the abrupt change to remote learning, the capstone requirements did not change, only the delivery system. Each business plan module was completed as originally required, and the written plan and oral presentation deadlines were not adjusted. Collaborative team meetings were still essential for plan and presentation development, and student teams used WebEx, Zoom and several social media tools to fulfill these requirements.

“Dr. Jenn Bonoff and I remark each year that we are so pleased how well the capstone business planning students come together as a team, delivering such professional business plans and polished presentations,” said Sam Sacco, lecturer and program coordinator. “This year was even more remarkable. Each team accepted Salve’s changed learning environment and the challenges that accompanied it. They committed their collective energy to accomplishing the required capstone objectives and finished like champions. We are so proud of their spirit, skills and sense of purpose.”
