Spring 2022’s Multicultural Education Week highlights topics of racism, nonviolence

Multicultural Education Week happens every semester at Salve Regina as a chance to wrestle with and celebrate topics around diversity and inclusion. For spring 2022, the Multicultural Education Week will host both in-person and virtual events, with lectures, panelists and performers who will focus on racism, nonviolence and gender issues.

Below is the lineup of speakers and events to help students, faculty and staff process what these issues mean to Salve Regina and the wider world in an engaging and personal manner.

Multicultural and Multilingual Mass
Sunday, Feb. 27, 7-9 p.m.
Our Lady of Mercy Chapel and Online

Join the campus as it debuts this Multicultural Education Week with diverse prayers from around the world. The Mass consists of readings and songs in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.

Opening Speaker: Bertice Berry and Finding Your Purpose and Redefining Diversity
Monday, Feb. 28, 7-9 p.m.
Online Event

Dr. Bertice Berry is an active member of the community and is very knowledgeable when it comes to issues surrounding stereotypes, generalizations and clichés. She addresses difficult topics such as racism and sexism through her powerful lectures.

Panel Discussion: Discussion on Gender Based Violence On a College Campus 
Tuesday, March 1, 7-9 p.m.
Bazarsky Lecture Hall and Online

February is teen dating violence prevention and awareness month. This panel discussion will explore the various ways gender violence affects the community, and panelists will engage in a dialogue regarding their experiences, as well as their recommendations to improve the cultural climate at Salve Regina and beyond.

Multi-faith Ash Wednesday Service, Spoken Word: The Spiritual Power of Nonviolence
Wednesday, March 2, 7-8:30 p.m.
Our Lady of Mercy Chapel and Online

In collaboration with the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life, the community is invited to a spoken word event rooted in spirituality where a variety of religious perspectives will emerge to share the true meaning of nonviolence. The event will feature diverse talents, live music and storytelling presented by Salve Regina students.

Performer Teja Arboleda: You’ve Crossed The Line! Comedy, Diversity and Freedom of Speech
Thursday, March 3, 7-9 p.m.
Online Event

Entertaining Diversity, Inc., presents, “You’ve Crossed The Line! Comedy, Diversity and Freedom of Speech.” YCTL is a live performance and judging program designed for college campuses, civic engagement centers and communities at large to spark conversations about the differences between what is humorous versus what is harmful, who can say what and the repercussions.

Multicultural Celebration
Friday, March 4, 7-11 p.m.
Ochre Court

Join Salve Regina for some cultural exploration, extraordinarily diverse garb and magnificent cuisine from every continent. It’s a time to come together for a night of warmth, celebration and acceptance. A virtual show will also be showcasing some hidden Salve Regina talents.

Multicultural Education Week is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Programs and Retention; the Office of Student Engagement; the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy; Residence Life; the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance; Campus Activities Board; the Black Student Union; the Hispanic & Latinx Student Organization; the Multicultural Student Organization; and the Student Government Association.

      Meet with a member of Admissions Office to hear about Salve Regina's mission, campus life and academics directly from an admissions counselor in a group setting. It's a great introduction to Salve Regina and all the opportunities that exist for you here. 

      A virtual information session is designed for those who are in the college search and application process. If you would like to learn more about Salve Regina University and have your questions answered in a live chat, this is the best place to start. Our sessions last approximately one hour.

      You will also be able to view our virtual tour as part of your registration for this presentation.

    • Reunion Weekend
      Friday, June 3 to Sunday, June 5

      Reunion Weekend will be packed with exciting events both on and off campus. It's been too long since we've been able to welcome you to campus for a reunion celebration, so these events are sure to be worth the trip back to Newport. Return to campus and reconnect with your classmates - all alumni are welcome to attend.
