Students seeking to live the mission of Salve Regina through service are encouraged to apply for immersion trips to Florida or South Dakota in summer 2020. These service immersions offer a unique opportunity for students to volunteer, experience a new culture, build community and reflect on their service experiences.

Florida: May 9-15, 2020

Each year 27,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. The goal of Give Kids the World Village is to provide everything these families need to make their trip the vacation of a lifetime. Since 1986, more than 160,000 children and families have had their dreams come true at the village.

The village depends on volunteers to fill hundreds of shifts every day. Volunteering at Give Kids the World Village means being part of an organization that is truly unique, helping kids and their families create priceless memories in a time when they need it most.

Applications are available online and are due by noon Monday, Sept. 30. The program fee is $600, which includes roundtrip airfare, housing accommodations, trip transportation and meals.

South Dakota: Aug. 8-15, 2020

The South Dakota service immersion is run through Simply Smiles, an organization that provides bright futures for impoverished children, their families and their communities. Students will volunteer at the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation, sharing their attention, energy, talents and experiences with children.

Volunteers will help to run activities for the children, such as crafts, games, field trips, special theme events like “superhero week” and more. They will also work side-by-side with Simply Smiles staff members to execute a variety of community programs, including sports tournaments, community meals, cooking classes and more.

Applications are available online and are due by noon Monday, Sept. 30. The estimated program fee is $1,600, which includes a $750 fee to Simply Smiles.

For more information on either program, contact the Center for Community Engagement and Service at (401) 341-2440 or community.services@salve.edu.
