Story in the Public Square, a weekly television program that aims to make sense of the stories shaping public life in the U.S. and abroad, will be broadcast in major markets across America beginning in September. Since January 2017, the show has been a fixture on SiriusXM and in southeastern New England from its flagship TV station, Rhode Island PBS.

New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Atlanta, Boston, Phoenix, Detroit, San Diego, Milwaukee, Tampa, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Memphis and St. Louis are among the markets where the show will air every week.

Hosted by Jim Ludes, executive director of the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy, and G. Wayne Miller, staff writer at The Providence Journal, Story in the Public Square provides insights and perspectives into culture, politics and current national and international events from diverse storytellers of every variety and in any media.

“We’re excited to bring the show to a national television audience,” Ludes said. “Storytelling has always been central to public life but it has never been more important than now, when on a daily basis we are bombarded with stories from endless sources. Our guests help us sort them out and bring us to new understandings.”

“While we explore topics of significance to us as individuals and fellow citizens of a complex world, we are also mindful that the best discussions are not only spirited but often fun,” Miller added. “Our audiences tell us they like the lively tone we set. They also appreciate the still and moving images we incorporate into the show.”

Thirteen guests will appear on Story in the Public Square’s first national season. They are:

Twelve aspiring nursing students from Egypt are taking part in a two-week observational study tour hosted by Salve Regina at the request of the Institute of International Education.

The study tour is part of the LOTUS scholarship program, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development with the support of the American people. LOTUS offers comprehensive scholarship packages to talented and deserving Egyptian students with a demonstrated financial need to obtain degrees from Egyptian private universities. Students are selected based on their potential to play a leadership role in areas of high demand that are critical to Egypt’s development.

This year’s study tour included two weeks of English language training at the University of Kentucky, followed by two weeks of nursing education at Salve Regina. While at the University, students have visited a wide array of medical facilities and health care organizations, including Hope Hospice, PACE, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Women and Infants Hospital, Planned Parenthood, Newport Hospital and the Newport Health Equity Zone.

The visits have been augmented by lectures and demonstrations by a host of Salve nursing faculty and organization representatives on a wide range of advanced nursing topics, including community mental health, genetics and health histories, holistic health, newborn health, cardiology and triage and disaster response. In addition, the students are exploring concepts of culture and communication as well as culture’s impact on perceptions of current events across borders.

“This program has been a wonderful opportunity to share the concepts of nursing practice, leadership and professionalism that are adhered to in the United States,” said Dr. Debra Grosskurth, chairwoman of the Department of Nursing. “The students have been amazing. They are extremely intelligent, engaged and enthusiastic to learn. As the students are learning about various nursing practices in the United States, they have been eager to share how nursing practice is performed in Egypt. This has been a wonderful multicultural experience, and it has been an honor to host this program.”

The program is a collaboration between the Office of International Programs and the Department of Nursing and was supported by faculty from the departments of Cultural, Environmental and Global Studies and English and Communications.

Twenty-one high school students from China who are exploring higher education opportunities in the United States were given an in-depth look at Salve Regina when they visited campus July 10-14 as participants of Sakae Institute of Study Abroad.

Organized by the Office of International Programs, the visit introduced the Chinese students to a variety of campus life experiences, including classroom lectures, cultural tours and an educational exchange with local middle and high school students participating in Newport Community School programming. 

Kiyomi Donnelly, coordinator of Salve’s English for Academic Purposes program, presented ESL lessons; Dr. William Leeman, associate professor of history, gave a lecture on “Images of the U.S. Civil War;” and Dr. Timothy Neary, associate professor of history, presented a lecture on “The Modern Civil Rights Movement.” 

Jill Wynsen ’19, an education major working as a summer assistant in the Office of International Programs, helped coordinate the Chinese students’ itinerary, which also included meals at Miley cafeteria, recreational activities on campus, formal campus tours, and visits to Easton’s (First) Beach. 

“It has been our pleasure to welcome Chinese high school students from Sakae each summer as they explore university options in the United States,” said Ronn Beck, director of international recruitment and admissions. “We are honored to provide them with an opportunity to experience Salve—our campus and faculty—and Newport. This year, the interaction with students from the Newport Community School was an added bonus that, hopefully, gave both groups of students a fun taste of the rewards of cultural exchange.” 

Sakae Institute of Study Abroad provides an array of college advising and placement services to both Chinese and Japanese students, and has helped to advise 7,000 students on their way to receive undergraduate and graduate degrees in the U.S. The Sakae curriculum incorporates academic skill development and training in U.S. academic culture.
