Theatre arts program holding auditions Sunday

Salve Regina’s theatre arts program will hold auditions for “Doubt” and “Our Town” at noon Sunday, Sept. 13 in the Megley Theatre (Antone Academic Center, Room 127).

Rehearsals for both shows will be held from 6-10 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

In John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Doubt,” a rigid nun questions a priest’s relationship with the only African-American student at their Catholic school. The cast includes one man and three women. Rehearsals will begin Sept. 16 for performances Oct. 22-25.

Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town,” also a Pulitzer Prize winner, tells the story of fictional American small town Grover’s Corners through the everyday lives of its citizens. The cast includes seven men and seven women. Rehearsals will begin Nov. 16 for performances Feb. 11-14, 2016.

The directors of both productions are seeking non-traditional casts, and people of color are encouraged to audition. Casting is open to all members of the Salve Regina community as well as the general public.

University community invited to strategic planning conversations

Salve Regina is embarking on the development of its next strategic plan, and members of the University community are invited to share their ideas and help shape the future of the institution during a series of campus conversations.

The University is committed to developing a plan that emerges from broad-based discussion and input from the entire campus community. Each session will be facilitated by a team from the steering committee, which includes Nancy Gordon, Jim Ludes, Tim Neary, Martha Rose, Shelia Quinn, Malcolm Smith and Scott Zeman.

Extensions Dance Company holding auditions Saturday

Extensions and Extensions II, the University’s professional dance companies, will hold auditions at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 in the Rodgers Recreation Center, Room 039. Students who wish to audition should be prepared to learn ballet, modern/contemporary and jazz combinations and perform in small groups.

Directed by assistant professor Lindsay Guarino, Extensions is a full year commitment. The selected ensembles will have the opportunity to train at an advanced level of technique, work with nationally renowned guest choreographers and faculty, and perform on campus and throughout the New England region.

Salve Regina’s professional company, Extensions performs in two main-stage concerts at the Casino Theatre and at off-campus at events throughout the region. Extensions trains at an advanced level of technique while working with a variety of guest artists who visit campus and set choreography in intensive-style workshops.

Extensions II was developed as a junior company in the fall of 2014, providing performance opportunities to more dancers. This year, the company will perform in on-campus events such as the Banned Books Read-Out and the Mercy Center’s Festival of Lights in addition to working with two invited guest artists and a variety of student choreographers for the Student Choreography Showcase in April 2016.

University’s ranking jumps in 2016 U.S. News survey

Salve Regina’s ranking among the best institutions of higher education in the United States jumped 14 spots from the previous year, earning accolades for both its undergraduate and graduate programs in an annual survey conducted by U.S. News & World Report.

In the 2016 edition of U.S. News’ Best College rankings, Salve Regina ranked 36th among top tier Regional Universities – North, as well as being designated as the 28th Best College for Veterans. U.S. News’ Best Grad School Rankings cited the University’s program in rehabilitation counseling 69th (up two spots from 2015).

The survey’s northern region includes colleges and universities in New England, New York and the Mid-Atlantic states.

According to the magazine’s methodology, regional universities offer a full range of undergraduate programs and some master’s degree programs. Salve Regina also offers a doctoral program in the humanities.

The University’s military friendly designation derives from its membership of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Consortium, its certification for the GI Bill and its participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

The magazine annually rates more than 1,400 colleges and universities on 16 indicators of academic excellence including selectivity, peer assessment, retention rate, financial resources, class size, student-faculty ratio, proportion of full-time faculty and alumni giving.

Salve Regina introduces new campus shuttle system, “SafeStop” app

Salve Regina is now providing regularly scheduled shuttle service to and from designated stops on and off campus via the new campus shuttle system. In addition, students can track the shuttles and find shuttle stops through the new “SafeStop” app.

The shuttle will operate from 7 p.m. to midnight Sunday through Wednesday (8 p.m. to midnight off campus) and from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.

Sister Jane announces Presidential Faculty Award recipients

President Jane Gerety, RSM, has announced the latest recipients of Presidential Faculty Awards: Dr. Jon Marcoux, assistant professor in the Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural and Historic Preservation Program, and Dr. Jen McClanaghan, assistant professor and writer in residence in the Department of English and Communications.

Marcoux will receive a one-course reduction during the fall 2016 semester to complete an article based on his archaeological research project, “Documenting the Southeastern Indian Diaspora (ca. 1670-1715).”

“This period saw many groups leaving their ancestral territories and moving hundreds of miles in order flee slaving raids and/or disease outbreaks or to move closer to European trading posts,” Marcoux said. “This project offers the unique opportunity to document the emerging social relationships that came to define the Colonial experience for American Indians – a group whose voice is keenly absent in current histories.”

Marcoux’s project will also provide opportunities for hands-on learning and collaboration to students in the cultural and historic preservation program. “By working closely with students in order to enrich our understanding of an historically exploited group, the project contributes to the University mission of imparting and expanding knowledge, developing skills and cultivating enduring values,” he said.

McClanaghan will receive a one-course reduction during the spring 2017 semester to work on a chapbook of poems about Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy, and research new innovations for her writing courses.

“I am drawn to origin stories, to the ways people, and especially women, recreate themselves and, in McAuley’s case, the world around them,” McClanaghan said. “I am also drawn to the friction between the role models we choose and those who choose us, between those who struggle to give shape to their own lives and those who, like McAuley, have reshaped the lives of many hundreds and thousands of souls who followed in her steps.”

McClanaghan said the chapbook will honor the University’s mercy tradition and “reflect on the terms I set for my life as a woman and writer and academic.”

O’Hare Academic Center debuts renovated classroom wing

When the fall 2015 semester gets underway Wednesday, students and faculty will begin using the O’Hare Academic Center’s renovated classroom wing, which was completed this summer as part of an ongoing $26 million renovation and expansion project.

Scheduled to conclude in June 2017, this project will add 23,000 square feet to O’Hare’s footprint and provide critical updates to its current educational spaces.

“This is an exciting time for Salve Regina, and we look forward to expanding the University’s capacity for contemporary teaching and learning,” said President Jane Gerety, RSM. “Completion of this first phase of the renovation of the O’Hare Academic Center provides us with an impressive preview of the many academic enhancements our students and faculty will enjoy. We understand that progress of this nature will cause some disruption, and I appreciate the support, encouragement and patience of the entire University community.”

Renovation of the north classroom wing marks the first phase of this four-phase project. The second phase, which will continue throughout this academic year, centers on the addition that will eventually house the departments of Business Studies and Economics and Nursing.

In summer 2016, the third phase will focus on renovating the existing laboratories for the departments of Biology and Biomedical Sciences and Chemistry. The last phase, scheduled for fall 2016, will provide a comprehensive update to the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

Throughout the 2015-2016 academic year, Jazzman’s Cafe will continue to operate as usual. A second eatery, Sandella’s Flatbread Cafe, will be added next summer. Offerings will include salads, paninis, quesadillas, grilled flatbreads and wraps.

Although the renovated classroom wing has been completed, it will not be configured for permanent use. Business and nursing faculty will be temporarily housed in this wing until their new spaces are completed next summer. After that, the wing will house the departments of Mathematical Sciences and Social Work and provide general classroom space.

O’Hare will be functional throughout the construction process, with every effort being made to minimize disruptions to students and faculty.

Athletics
Two football players earn conference honors

Two members of the football team recently earned weekly honors from the New England Football Conference. Quarterback Brandan Basil ’17 was named offensive player of the week and linebacker Danny Ives ’16 was named defensive player of the week.

Basil, a transfer from Southern Connecticut State University, passed for 322 yards and four touchdowns in a come-from-behind 41-28 victory over Worcester State University last Saturday. He finished 18-of-32 with a long play of 63 yards in his first game in a Salve Regina uniform.

Ives led all players in the game with 15 tackles as Salve Regina rallied from deficits three different times its contest with Worcester State. He had 12 solo stops among his tally, which also included an assisted tackle for loss.

Salve Regina has two weeks to prepare for its next opponent, as the Seahawks will host Castleton State University on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Gaudet Field.

IT consolidates Help Desk services, introduces new card system

The Office of Information Technology has consolidated all Help Desk services for students, faculty and staff to the McKillop Library, Room 008 (garden level).

This move was designed to build a centralized services and support center in the garden level of the library, which currently houses User Support Services, the Center for Teaching and Learning, Mail Services and the Copy Center.

IT will offer extended hours of operation this week to assist students with network registration, Microsoft Office installation and other technology support issues. The Help Desk will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 and from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9 and Thursday, Sept. 10. Regular operating hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

All existing contact information will remain the same. To contact the Help Desk, call (401) 341-7777 or email helpdesk@salve.edu.

In addition, IT is now supporting the Salve Card office, which is located in the McKillop Library, Room 002 (garden level). For the fall 2015 semester, Salve Regina is implementing a new card system, which will feature contactless technology for door access and a more efficient database system.

While the Card Office will replace missing or malfunctioning ID cards, after-hours building access – including the issuance of temporary cards – will continue to be handled by the Office of Safety and Security.

Salve Regina welcoming students to campus Sept. 6 and 7

Salve Regina will welcome new students to campus on Sunday, Sept. 6, while upperclassmen will return Monday, Sept. 7.

On both days, check-in to the residence halls for new students will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students should report directly to their assigned residence hall or apartment. Residence Life staff will not be available to assist with check-in until the scheduled time.

Move-In Day Parking

To accommodate families on new student move-in day, parking lots for Hunt, Miley, Moore and Reefe halls will be closed beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. Any student, faculty or staff vehicles remaining will be subject to ticketing and/or towing. It is essential that these parking lots are empty for loading purposes during the move-in process.

Explorientation

New students will spend their first few days on campus participating in Explorientation, which is designed to help them meet people, learn about Salve Regina and its campus and prepare for a successful year in college.

During Explorientation, students meet their First Year Experience peer mentor, participate in volunteer work and attend Convocation, a Salve Regina tradition that welcomes new students to the University. Students can also check out the ThinkFast game show, attend an outdoor movie, stop by the McKillop Library open house, and explore the campus and surrounding community.
