For a group of 20 students, spring break kicked off with a trip to Maine for the seventh annual Northeastern Undergraduate Research and Development Symposium (NURDS).

Held at the University of New England, the science conference provides an opportunity for undergraduates to present their individual research projects to a wider scientific community. Thirty colleges and universities were represented this year.

The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy is inviting rising sophomores to apply for the Nuala Pell Leadership Development Program, which aims to build students’ leadership skills that can be used in the classroom and in the real world.

Twelve students from the Class of 2018 who demonstrate a commitment to developing their leadership skills will be selected to participate in the program for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Students in the program will attend monthly seminars and engage with accomplished leaders in Rhode Island. Past speakers have included the president of the Rhode Island Foundation, senior vice president of CVS Caremark and a state Superior Court judge.

In addition, students will work in groups to propose, design and execute their own service projects. Students will also be asked to write monthly reflections to document their progress throughout the program.

Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA as of September 2015 and must be able to attend all meetings of the group. They can come from any department or major, and do not need to be currently engaged in campus leadership activities. Acceptances will primarily be based on the goal of creating a diverse group of students.

Application requirements:

• Identify and ask a Salve Regina faculty or staff member to nominate you by sending a simple nominating email to teresa.haas@salve.edu by March 30 (letter of reference not required; nominators may not include Ducha Hang or Robin Hoffmann).
• Email a statement of interest (400-500 words) to teresa.haas@salve.edu by April 2. The statement should indicate why you are interested in the program, what leadership experiences you have had (strong history of leadership is not required), and how you anticipate using leadership skills in the future.

Approximately two dozen applicants will be asked to participate in an interview with a member of the selection committee. As part of its decision-making process, the selection committee may also consult with an applicant’s First Year Transitions instructor.

The selection committee will notify students of their provisional acceptance (depending on academic standing and GPA as of Sept. 1, 2015) the week of April 27.

A number of Salve Regina’s talented students will perform a variety of acts – ranging from vocal performances to dance numbers to comedy – during the annual Salve’s Got Talent event, scheduled for 9 p.m. Friday, March 20 in the Casino Theatre. All members of the Salve Regina and Newport communities are welcome to attend.

What can someone do with an English major? Public relations and publishing, social media and traditional newspapers, teaching and nonprofit management – and that’s just for starters.

These career paths and others will be the focus of the Department of English and Communications’ Career Connections Day, scheduled for 1-3 p.m. Saturday, March 21 in the DiStefano Lecture Hall. Co-sponsored by the Office of Career Development and featuring a panel of English alumni, the event is free and open to the public.

“Our junior and senior majors will welcome the advice our alumni can offer about how to navigate the job market,” said Dr. D. Matthew Ramsey, chairman of the Department of English and Communications. “But first-year students and sophomores will also have the chance to explore their career options as English majors. It’s never to early to start thinking about how to get the most out of your major – and the most out of your professional life.”

The panel will feature alumni in English literature and English communications. Breakout sessions will allow those interested in the major to talk with panelists more one-on-one. For those interested in graduate school, a session on selecting and applying to graduate programs will also be included.

From the American Revolution to phantasmagoria to organic farming, the academic interests of Salve Regina students are wide-ranging and diverse. On Friday, March 20, more than 275 of the University’s undergraduates will showcase their research, talents and extracurricular activities during the annual SRyou Student Exposition.

Themed “Grow What You Know,” SRyou 2015 is the largest exposition to date, with dozens of posters, performances and conference-style presentations taking place between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday.

“SRyou has become a wonderful Salve tradition and is a great way for the entire community to experience firsthand the amazing intellectual and creative force of our students,” said Dr. Laura O’Toole, dean of arts and sciences.

This year’s student planning board is shaking things up by changing the venues to better accommodate the growing event. Poster presentations and table displays will be in the Rodgers Recreation Center gymnasium, while performances and concurrent presentation panels will be in the Antone Academic Center. The festive closing reception, scheduled for 3 p.m. in Ochre Court, will celebrate the day and kick off the weekend.

At each session, participants will receive a raffle ticket for the chance to win prizes from local vendors, and all student attendees will receive a voucher for a free raffle ticket for Salve’s Got Talent on Friday night, courtesy of the Office of Student Activities.
