Multicultural Programs offering safe space training, ally certification

The Office of Multicultural Programs will offer safe space training and ally certification on Thursday, Feb. 26 as part of Multicultural Education Week activities. The training and certification are open to all students, faculty and staff.

The first session, “Awareness and Sensitivity for the LGBTQ Community,” will be held from 1-3:30 p.m. in the Ochre Court library. Participants will learn appropriate language, constructs and theories that apply to the LGBTQ community. Tailored specifically to issues on college campuses, this educational session will serve as the platform for participants to learn more about identifying as an ally.

The second session, “Being an Active Bystander and Ally to the LGBTQ Community,” will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. in the Ochre Court library. In this interactive session, participants will learn what it means to be an ally, how to respond when peers or students are in crisis, resources available to the LGBTQ community and its allies, and make a personal pledge to be an ally.

It is highly recommended that participants attend the first session before attending the second session. If you cannot attend the first session but would like to attend the second session, email sami.nassim@salve.edu.

Participants who attend both sessions will be considered certified allies for the Salve Regina community and will receive an ally certification badge.

Hanlon named player of the week

Barrett Hanlon ’16 was recently named the Commonwealth Coast Conference player of the week for men’s basketball.

Hanlon registered the only 40-point performance by a conference player this season, pouring in a career-high 40 points in the Seahawks’ tough 84-80 loss to Curry College in the final game of the season. In addition to scoring half of his team’s points, he dished out a game-high nine assists and grabbed four rebounds.

Earlier in the week, Hanlon hit what proved to be the game-winning jumper with five seconds remaining in Salve Regina’s 58-56 victory over Western New England University, finishing the contest with 14 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. For the week, he averaged 27.0 points, 5.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game, while shooting 59 percent from the field, 60 percent from three-point distance and 62 percent from the line.

The Seahawks finished the season outside of the conference playoffs for the first time since 2010.

Class of 2015 invited to Graduation Fair

The Center for Student Development and the Office of Academic Affairs will sponsor a Graduation Fair for members of the Class of 2015 from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25 in the Ochre Court state dining room.

All students who are potential candidates for graduation in May 2015 are encouraged to attend. Representatives from various offices will be present to provide additional information, answer questions and help to ensure that all graduation requirements have been met.

Study abroad application deadline extended

Want to go abroad this fall? There is still time. The Office of International Programs has extended the deadline for submitting fall 2015 and 2015-2016 academic year study abroad applications to Sunday, March 1. Applications are available online.

All students are encouraged to apply. Requirements include:

  • Minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA.
  • Office of Student Affairs review of student conduct records. You must be in good disciplinary standing to be fully accepted. Students with minor disciplinary infractions on record may be conditionally accepted at the discretion of the director of international programs.
  • Payment of Salve Regina tuition and a $550 study abroad fee. The study abroad fee is waived for students attending a recognized Salve Regina exchange partner program. Refer to the home school tuition policy for details.
  • Availability of academic credits to fulfill your degree requirements. Applicants must have a declared major and be of junior standing or have departmental permission.

HR sponsoring estate planning workshop

Many people believe that estate planning is only for the wealthy, but this is a common misconception. Everyone needs estate planning – it’s one of the best ways to ensure that your wishes will be carried out.

With this in mind, the Office of Human Resources will offer an estate planning workshop for faculty and staff at noon Wednesday, Feb. 25 in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

  • Setting and prioritizing goals
  • Managing the potential impact of federal estate taxes
  • Wills and trusts and what they can mean to you
  • Strategies to help ensure that loved ones are properly cared for

Multicultural Education Week returns Feb. 23-27

After two successful implementations, Multicultural Education Week is back. Scheduled for Feb. 23-27, the Office of Multicultural Programs’ third annual Multicultural Education Week progresses in three stages: engagement, discussion and celebration.

Engagement: Bertice Berry

7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall

The week kicks off with award-winning speaker, bestselling author and critically acclaimed comedienne Bertice Berry. No one defies stereotypes, generalizations or cliches more than Berry. Having earned her Ph.D in sociology by the age of 26, she went on to become an award-winning entertainer, lecturer and comedienne in addition to hosting her own nationally syndicated talk show, “The Bertice Berry Show.”

Engagement: Student showcase

7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, O’Hare Academic Center second floor

Some of the most valuable lessons we learn in college aren’t found in textbooks, but in one another. The student showcase will feature eight presentation- and discussion-based sessions facilitated by students, who will speak to the successes and adversities of their experiences. Topics will include the annual Nicaragua service trip, buying fair trade in regard to Costa Rica, Hour to Empower, the multicultural leadership retreat, the Alliance, Global Citizens Club and “Greg’s Story: One Step at a Time,” presented by Greg Demeule ’15.

Engagement: “You’ve Crossed the Line”

7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, Bazarsky Lecture Hall

In this competitive comedy show, Salve Regina faculty and staff will judge professional stand-up comics on pushing the limits of discrimination-based humor. Judges include Khalil Habib, G. Wayne Miller, Christelle Miskizak, Mimi Mutoni and Sean O’Callaghan. Can a white comedian make jokes about black people? Can an Asian comedian make jokes about Hispanic people? “You’ve Crossed the Line” brings comedians and education to the forefront of civil rights and human rights efforts to address freedom of speech, equality and diversity.

Discussion: Safe space and ally certification

1-3:30 p.m. and 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, Ochre Court library

What does it take to create a safe space? To identify and mobilize a network of people who are empathetic and knowledgeable about LGBT people and topics, to provide evidence of LGBT support by displaying a sign as a visible symbol of personal commitment, and to reduce the fear of reprisal and discrimination of LGBT persons within the Salve Regina community. This is an opportunity for students, staff and faculty to become ally certified, providing access to not only awareness of the LGBT community, but also the proper qualifications to take appropriate action.

Discussion: “Overcoming Adversity”

8-10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, Ochre Court state dining room

During “Overcoming Adversity: An Honest Dialogue About Diversity,” Nadia Abgrab, Ducha Hang, Sami Nassim, Sean O’Callaghan and Kathy Vespia will discuss the discrimination, plight, hardship and success that each of us may face on both the personal and national level. The presentation will conclude with an open-floor discussion about the cultural adversity our country is facing (such as the recent incident in Ferguson).

Celebration: Multicultural Festival

8 p.m. to midnight Friday, Feb. 27, Ochre Court

The festival will feature cultural exploration, tips from student experts and a fashion show. Let us taste the magnificent cuisine from every corner of the globe. Let us see the dances that have been passed from generation to generation. Let us come together for a night of warmth, celebration and acceptance.

Roundtable explores similarities in teacher prep, military training

The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will sponsor a roundtable discussion exploring the similarities between teacher preparation and military training at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24 in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

Teacher preparation and military training share the same goal: To develop leaders to execute the mission. Research and professional experience has led to the identification of six shared lessons – trust your training, be a battle buddy, be a leader, nurture yourself, steel your battle mind, and grab your lifeline.

During this roundtable, participants will discuss how these lessons play a key role in preparing and supporting an “all-volunteer” teaching and military force. The discussion will be led by Dr. Kathleen Vespia, assistant professor in the Department of Education, and Dr. Tom Gibbons, associate professor of professional military and graduate education effectiveness at the Naval War College.

Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff, and lunch is provided. As space is limited, those interested in attending should RSVP to pellcenter@salve.edu.

Language House seeking applicants for 2015-2016 academic year

The Office of International Programs, in collaboration with the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, is inviting current freshmen to submit applications to participate in the Language House living learning community for the 2015-2016 academic year.

The living learning community is an opportunity for students to have a French or Spanish immersion experience while living on campus. Students of any ability level are welcome to apply.

Fulbright foreign language teaching assistants facilitate the living learning community. This year, Salve Regina welcomed Romina Fetta from Argentina and Christelle Miskisak from France. Together with their teaching assistants, students watch movies, participate in language tables, volunteer at Pell Elementary School and make meals, all while speaking the target language.

“This is an excellent opportunity for students to live collaboratively with native speakers and share new cultural and linguistic experiences,” said Dr. Emily Colbert Cairns, assistant professor in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages. “It is a unique experience and Salve is the first school in Rhode Island to boast a Language House.”

Four Seahawks earn conference honors

Congratulations to the following ice hockey players, who recently received honors from the Eastern College Athletic Conference:

Men’s ice hockey: Marc Biggs ’16

Biggs made the honor roll after netting a pair of goals against Nichols College, including a first-period goal that gave the Seahawks a 2-1 lead and a game-tying goal with three seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Women’s ice hockey: Colleen Marcik ’17

Marcik made the honor roll after posting back-to-back shutouts in wins over Nichols College and New England College. She now has four shutouts on the year and improves her record to 13-6-1 in net for the Seahawks.

Women’s ice hockey: Danielle Phalon ’16

Phalon was named player of the week after notching two goals and three assists in back-to-back 4-0 shutouts against Nichols College and New England College. She now leads the team in scoring with 16 goals and eight assists for 24 total points.

The Seahawks have won 10 straight against conference opponents. They wrap up the regular season on the road versus Saint Anselm College and Saint Michael’s College.

Men’s ice hockey: Evan Schmidbauer ’18

Schmidbauer was named rookie of the week for the third straight week after scoring the only goals in a 2-0 win versus Becker College. He also assisted on the game-tying goal with three seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime against Nichols College.

The Seahawks host Western New England University at 7:10 p.m. Thursday Feb. 19. They can clinch the No. 2 seed with a win, tie or Johnson and Wales loss.

Faculty, staff encouraged to submit Who’s Who nominations

The national program Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges honors outstanding campus leaders for their scholastic and community achievements. Faculty and staff are invited to nominate those students whose academic standing, participation in extracurricular activities and community services are decidedly above average.

The following are the qualification requirements for inclusion in Who’s Who. Each recommended nomination must:

  • Presently be a matriculated junior, senior or graduate student at Salve Regina.
  • Be one who evidences high scholastic ability (a minimum 3.00 GPA). Note: Please do not call the Office of the Registrar for individual students’ cumulative GPAs. This information will be verified once all nominations have been received.
  • Be a participant and leader in academic and extracurricular activities.
  • Be of service to the University as an outstanding citizen and community member.
  • Be one who demonstrates potential for future achievements.

Students who have received this honor in the past two years are not eligible to be nominated again. Please review these names before nominating students for this academic year.

A Who’s Who nomination form should be submitted for each recommended student. Forms should be submitted to the Office of Student Activities by Friday, March 6.
