Multicultural living learning community seeking applicants

The Office of Multicultural Programs, in collaboration with the Office of Campus Life and the departments of Philosophy and Religious and Theological Studies, is inviting current freshmen to submit applications to participate in the multidisciplinary, multicultural living learning community for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Up to 50 students will be chosen to join the expanded living learning community, living together in Ochre Lodge and the Ochre Lodge Annex. Selected students will participate in curricular and co-curricular activities designed to help them achieve a better understanding of diversity, multiculturalism and inclusion.

“The main goal is to promote cultural competency skills, development and self-awareness for our students as well as to provide an opportunity for interaction with people who are different,” said Dr. Sami Nassim, director of multicultural programs. “We emphasize that this is a community open to people from all walks of life.”

To complement the experience, participants will be able to enroll in special sections of core courses specially designed for (and limited to) students in the living learning community. Courses will focus on issues of institutionalized privilege and oppression and explore how major world religions respond by promoting diversity and tolerance.

Dr. Sean O’Callaghan, assistant professor of religious and theological studies, will teach Christianity in Dialogue With World Religions. Dr. Troy Catterson, assistant professor of philosophy, will teach The Quest for the Good. In addition, Dr. Anthony LoPresti, associate professor of religious and theological studies, will teach a spring 2016 course, Christian Ethics and Social Issues.

Presentation gives cultural context to Paris terror attacks

Dean de la Motte, professor in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, returned from a six-month stay in France on the eve of the Paris terror attacks.

De la Motte will speak from his personal experience as a recent sympathetic visitor to and observer of France during “France Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: The Paris Terror Attacks in Cultural Context,” which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19 in the O’Hare Academic Center, Room 260.

Using a brief review of some essential history and selections from contemporary media, de la Motte will attempt to provide background helpful for understanding not only the attacks of Jan. 7-9, but also the unprecedented reaction of the French people. He hopes that the presentation will raise questions for further discussion, and that attendees will bring their own observations and areas of expertise.

The presentation will be followed by refreshments in Jazzman’s Cafe. As space is limited, those interested in attending are asked to RSVP to pellhonors@salve.edu.

Annual Cabaret Dinner benefits concert tour fund

The Department of Music, Theatre and Dance will hold its annual Cabaret Dinner at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20 in the Ochre Court state dining room.

Students will provide table service and perform selections from popular and musical theater repertoire.

Admission is $35 for general and $18 for students on the meal plan and children under 12. Proceeds from the event benefit the Madrigals and University Chorus concert tour fund, which helps to defray the cost of travel to performances in the United States and abroad. Recent trips have included Greece, Italy and Ireland.

Nicholas to discuss technological monitoring of employees

Is technological monitoring of employees good management or an invasion of privacy? Dr. Arlene Nicholas, associate professor in the Department of Business Studies and Economics, will explore this question during a McKillop Library presentation scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19.

The mass explosion of technology has created an entirely new way for employees to be looked at by their employers. For some, everything from cameras to social media accounts has been monitored and even used as the reason for an employee’s dismissal. Some laws do protect employees from certain forms of employer monitoring.  But are these practices an invasion of the employee’s privacy or just good management practices for employers?

Nicholas’ research interests include generational studies focusing on Generation Y, e-textbook usage, learning management systems, human resource management, social responsibility and teleworking. She has presented papers at national and international scholarly conferences, and has been an invited speaker at international businesses and professional organizations. Her works have been published as a book, a chapter in a book and in scholarly journals.

Deadline to submit SRyou proposals extended

The deadline to submit proposals for the sixth annual SRyou Student Exposition – an all-day event featuring the work of Salve Regina students – has been extended to Saturday, Feb. 21.

Scheduled for Friday, March 20, the sixth annual SRyou will consist of two concurrent sessions of presentations, poster sessions, table displays, workshops and performances, along with a closing reception for all participants and attendees.

This year’s theme, “Grow What You Know,” celebrates the enrichment that SRyou provides for all members of the campus community, as well as the University mission’s focus on lifelong learning.

All undergraduate students are strongly encouraged to submit proposals, which will be accepted via the SRyou website. For more information, email the SRyou student planning board at sryou@salve.edu.

Fellowship exhibition honors 25 of state’s finest artists

The Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery has announced the opening of the 2015 Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Fellowship Exhibition, an annual event that showcases works by Rhode Island artists who have been recognized by the state for their artistic excellence. This year, the recent creative achievements of 25 artists will be honored in the program’s 11th exhibition.

The exhibit will be on display in the gallery from Feb. 13 through March 6. Several special events are planned, including:

  • Opening reception – 6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13
  • Fellowship writers’ night – 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26
  • Artists’ talk and closing reception – 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 6

“The fellowship exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to experience the work of the artists selected as Rhode Island’s 2015 RISCA fellows,” said Cristina DiChiera, director of artists programs for the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. “These artists were selected through a rigorous review process and they represent some of the finest creative talent our state has to offer.”

The gallery is handicap accessible with parking along Lawrence and Leroy avenues. Its exhibits are open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The gallery is closed on Mondays.

Roundtable focusing on international approaches to education

The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will sponsor a roundtable discussion focusing on “International Approaches to Education” at 11:45 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13 in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

Education is a crucial aspect of a nation’s identity and development. However, not all educational systems are the same.

The discussion will be led by Romina Fetta and Christelle Miskizak, Salve Regina’s 2014-2015 Fulbright foreign language teaching assistants. Both teach in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and live in the University’s language house located at Carnlough Cottage. Fetta and Miskizak will present their countries’ approaches to education, with an emphasis on higher education, and facilitate a discussion.

Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff, and lunch is provided. As space is extremely limited, those interested in attending should RSVP to pellcenter@salve.edu.

Faculty, staff invited to RIHETC workshop

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in an upcoming workshop sponsored by the Rhode Island Higher Education Training Consortium. “Dealing With Difficult Conversations and Managing Problem Employees” will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Feb. 20 at the Center for Adult Education in Warwick.

Underperforming employees negatively impact their own areas of responsibility, as well as the contribution of others, and confronting these individuals can be uncomfortable for many managers. Understanding a model for these difficult conversations will result in management confidence, and employee performance improvement through a clearly identified action plan.

Session goals:

  • Enhanced confidence when dealing with difficult conversations
  • An increase in employee productivity and engagement
  • An understanding of best practices when dealing with highly-charged situations

Session agenda:

  • Understanding your role as coach
  • The ties between coaching and employee engagement
  • Coaching paradigms

Students encouraged to apply for RA positions

The Office of Campus Life is seeking Resident Advisors to help lead the campus community during the 2015-2016 academic year. Successful candidates will have the desire and commitment necessary to make a difference in the lives of their peers.

RAs represent the Office of Campus Life as key staff members, working under the direct supervision of area coordinators. In addition to obtaining course credit, RAs complete an extensive training program that offers them an opportunity to develop valuable interpersonal and organizational skills.

Information sessions will be held:

  • 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 in the Hunt Hall first-floor common area
  • 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16 in the Miley Hall garden-level classroom
  • 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18 in the William Watts Sherman first-floor common area

The selection process consists of an application (including essays and two letters of recommendation), a group interview and an individual interview. Applications are available in the Office of Campus Life and are due Thursday, March 5.

Playwright to attend opening performance of “Beast on the Moon”

Playwright Richard Kalinoski will be presented with the inaugural Humanities Award by Project SAVE Armenian Photograph Archives during the opening performance of his play “Beast on the Moon” Thursday, Feb. 12. Kalinoski will also conduct a post-show discussion with performers and the audience.

Presented by the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance, “Beast on the Moon” will run Feb. 12-15 at the Casino Theatre. Show times are 8 p.m. Feb. 12-14 and 2 p.m. Feb. 14-15. For ticket information or reservations, call the box office at (401) 341-2250 or visit tinyurl.com/salvecasino.

“Beast on the Moon” follows the story of 19-year-old Aram Tomasian and his 15-year-old mail-order bride Seta, both recent immigrants and survivors of the Armenian genocide, as they try to create a new life for themselves in America after the tragic murder of their families. Theirs is a universal story of hope, healing, redemption, and ultimately, love.

The play implements a key photograph from Project SAVE’s archives to explore the emotional complexities faced by survivors of the Armenian genocide, committed by Ottoman Turks under cover of World War I. Since its first production in 1995, the play has won major national awards in several countries including France, Argentina and the United States.

“Having Mr. Kalinoski visit Salve and attend our opening night performance is surreal and an incredible honor,” said Reggie Phoenix, associate professor and director of the production. “We’ve worked to bring the play to life in a way that honors his beautiful and sensitive script. Our student actors are some of the best actors I’ve known and I think that having Mr. Kalinoski agree to come see their work is an enormous validation of their work and artistry.”
