The department also presented internship awards to two students that had outstanding experiences in their internships.

Lesya Fillatti interned at Frontier Horizon, the agency that helped bring her from Ukraine to America when she was just 13 years old. Frontier Horizon seeks to improve the health, education and general welfare of orphaned children in Ukraine, Nicaragua and Kyrgyzstan by connecting families with orphaned children. Fillatti learned about managing a nonprofit organization and served as a translator for children and families at the Ukraine orphanage and their host families.

Nills Manzi interned at Vanguard Economics in Rwanda. He completed projects related to national agricultural policy, market entry strategy for Rwandan goods into Nigeria, and cross-border trade between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. His clients included the government of Rwanda and several NGOs, including the World Bank.

In addition, Mark Dupont ’05, senior vice president and equity partner at Focus Financial Partners, received the Sigma Beta Delta Leadership Award. In his role as the department’s first executive in residence, Dupont will visit classes, host roundtable discussions and serve as an advisor and mentor to students.

Four employees receiving degrees during Commencement ceremonies

Four Salve Regina employees will receive degrees during this week’s Commencement exercises, bringing a whole new meaning to the term “work-study.” They will be awarded bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fields ranging from innovation and strategic management to psychology.

Stacey Carter, business outreach liaison, will receive her master’s degree in innovation and strategic management. Carter pursued the degree in order to expand the potential of the Center for Business Outreach and hopes to eventually teach courses at Salve Regina.

She thanked her daughter, Aliya, who is currently pursuing her own graduate degree. “She kept me going,” Carter said. “My colleagues in the Department of Business Studies and Economics were very supportive as well. I wasn’t sure what it would be like working alongside my professors, but it worked out nicely. They were very cool about it.”

Jeffrey Peiczarka, media support assistant, will receive his bachelor’s degree in psychology. “I enjoyed learning concepts and ideas that I could see manifest themselves in my day-to-day life,” he said. “I hope to achieve a life of learning about what inspires me and that which I’m deeply passionate about.”

He thanked his family – both biological and his brothers on the men’s rugby team – along with his girlfriend Haylee for supporting him over the past four years.

In addition to Carter and Peiczarka, Emily Barkan, office coordinator in the Office of Student Activities, will receive her MBA and Michael Marshall, network administrator in the Office of Information Technology, will receive his M.S. in administration of justice and homeland security with a concentration in cybersecurity and intelligence.

University to award 13 doctorates during Commencement

Salve Regina will award doctorates in humanities to 13 candidates during the graduate Commencement ceremony Thursday, May 17. The Ph.D. program offers the humanities as a foundation for understanding a world of accelerating and complex change.

Cultivating expertise in traditional humanities fields and building skills as contemporary interdisciplinary scholars, students pursue doctoral research that makes a difference; bridging disciplines and exploring questions of human meaning in a dynamic study of the past, present and future.

The candidates and their dissertation titles are:

Students meet with defense, technology experts during D.C. visit

Eight Salve Regina students working on an independent research study of the cyber risks to the military’s synthetic training environment recently visited Washington, D.C. with their professor, Jennifer McArdle, to participate in a series of discussions with experts from the defense and technology industries.

The students are working as research assistants with McArdle, who is lead investigator of the study being funded by a $180,000 grant from CAE, a global leader in training for the defense, civil aviation and health care markets.

In addition to assessing the cyber risks to the military’s synthetic training environment, the study is identifying cyber effects to inject into the military’s training environment for more realistic training and evaluating training needs for future scenarios where service members can train alongside real or synthetic cyber warriors.

During their visit, students met with representatives from CAE and the American Foreign Policy Council, discussed the cloud and cloud policy with officials from Microsoft, met with Congressman James Langevin (D-RI) and his staff, and attended a dinner hosted by CAE at its Washington, D.C. headquarters. They also toured the Pentagon.

Students participating in the visit included Eli Dias, Cassidy Lynch, Alexandra Brodeur, Ryan Ciocco, Nicholas Palumbo, Jacob Leahey, Allyssa Medeiros and Alexis Smith.

“The trip to D.C. was a very interactive and engaging experience,” Lynch said. “We not only got to meet some of the best and brightest people in their respective fields, but we truly got a sense of each individual, their studies and their job responsibilities. Each meeting featured a different topic in the defense and technology field and by the end, my fellow research students and I left with an abundance of knowledge on cybersecurity, policy, the cloud, foreign actors, defense contractors and LVCs.”

McArdle said the need for this research is extremely important because global defense strategies are evolving and potential adversaries are increasingly viewing cyber, electronic and information operations as a way to asymmetrically challenge established technology-centric capabilities. “Operators need to know how to effectively respond to threats in a networked environment,” she said. “Synthetic training provides the only high-fidelity environment where the end user can get this experience prior to combat.”

Spring grades to become available Wednesday, May 16

Grades for the spring 2018 semester will be available to view online starting Wednesday, May 16. Students who need printable grade reports can obtain them online when they access their grades through WebAdvisor in the portal.

Students: If you are requesting an official transcript and would like your spring 2018 grades to be posted on your transcript, you must wait until Wednesday, May 16 to place your transcript order through Parchment. If you are completing your degree requirements and would like your conferral date on your transcript, please wait until Thursday, May 24 to request your official transcript.

Transcripts will be denied to students with outstanding financial obligations. Students who have an urgent transcript request and are in doubt about the status of their account should call the Business Office at (401) 341-2900.

Gunther named CCC field performer of the year

The Commonwealth Coast Conference recently named Erin Gunther ’19 field performer of the year for women’s track and field. The conference also recognized its all-conference teams, which consisted of the medal winners in each of the 19 events at the conference championship. Gold medalists were named to the first team, with silver and bronze medalists named to the second and third teams.

At the conference championships, Gunther took the gold medal in the triple jump with a distance of 11.20 meters, which set both Salve Regina and meet records. She also placed third in the long jump to take the bronze medal in that category. She competed in the triple jump at the New England Championship and finished 17th.

The following students joined Gunther on the all-conference teams:

  • Alex Demeo ’19 – third team 5,000 meters
  • Natalie Kopiec ’19 – first team 400-meter hurdles, first team 4×100-meter relay and second team 100-meter hurdles

Florida service trip supports children with life-threatening illnesses

Located in Orlando, Florida, Give Kids the World Village gives children with life-threatening illnesses and their families the vacation of a lifetime. Since 1986, more than 150,000 children and families have had their dreams come true at the village. 

Each May, a group of Salve Regina students spends several days volunteering at the village through a service trip organized by the Office of Community Service. Below, Emma Murray ’19 recalls her participation in the 2017 trip.

Last year I had the honor of going on a service trip with 20 amazing students and faculty. I was walking to class and spotted a sign that read “Florida Service Trip.” Intrigued by this, I went to the Office of Community Service to inquire about this opportunity.

When they told me that we were going to Give Kids the World, my eyes started to well up with tears. These were not tears of sadness, but instead tears of joy. Give Kids the World was and still is a very special place for me. When I was 5 years old, I was granted a wish through A Wish Come True. I always said that when I graduated college I would return to Give Kids the World to give back to other children the experience that I had when I was 5. When I was accepted for the trip, I was so excited because my dream came true earlier than I thought it would.

When we pulled into the village, all my childhood memories came fluttering back into my mind. As I stood at the entrance, I was amazed at how much it had changed but in the same aspect stayed the same. The experience of going back was even more special for me because my friend Kendra, who also went on the trip, had her wish to go to Disney granted at the age of 16.

The reality of the situation did not really hit me until I entered the Castle of Dreams. In the Castle of Dreams, every child who comes to the village as a wish child decorates a star, and eventually they adorn every corner of the castle. I hoped that I would find my star – which I did – but the amazing part about my experience did not come from finding my star but instead came from staring at the walls and how many stars adorned them. As I looked around at all the stars, I realized how lucky I was to have the opportunity to come back and volunteer at a place that made my wish come true.

While we were in Florida, we also volunteered at the Sunshine Foundation. This is an organization much like Give Kids the World, but the Sunshine Foundation grants wishes of children with chronic illnesses as well as children that have been in abusive situations. All the wishes that they grant come from donations around the United States.

Fortunately, I have the opportunity to go on the service trip again this year. When we were planning for this year, we thought it would be cool to grant the wish of a child from Rhode Island. We began fundraising for a girl named Kiera who has low functioning autism. I had no doubt in my mind that we would raise the money to grant the wish. In the end, we reached our goal of $5,000 and were able to grant the wish for Kiera.

This is what I love about Salve and its mission statement. The mission statement says that we should support each other through the works of mercy, whether it be through service or academics. I can tell you with great confidence that the mission statement showed through when we banded together. This is why Salve stands out and we are truly one community banded together for a common cause.

Men’s soccer names three captains for 2018 season

Richie Leister ’19, Noah Medeiros ’19 and Matthew O’Donnell ’19 have been named captains of the men’s soccer team for the 2018 season.

“It should really come as no surprise to anyone associated with our men’s soccer program that I have named Rich, Matt and Noah as our team captains for next season,” said head coach Craig O’Rourke II. “Each has distinguished himself in some aspect of leadership for our program and all of our current players look to them to lead. We will need each of them to come into preseason ready, determined and focused if we are going to succeed on the field against our conference and non-conference opponents. With how tight and highly competitive the Commonwealth Coast Conference has become, the margins for error are at an absolute minimum this coming fall and solid leadership can be difference between success and failure.”

In 2017, the Seahawks went 11-5-3 overall and 5-3-1 in the conference, returning to the postseason for the first time since 2015.

Community Service holding annual end-of-the-year yard sale

The Office of Community Service will hold its annual end-of-the-year yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12 in the Wakehurst fireplace lounge. Featured items will include kitchenware, clothing, accessories, furniture, books, appliances, decorations and more.

The yard sale is cash only. Proceeds will help to fund scholarships for students participating in the office’s service trips.

The office is accepting donations for the yard sale through Friday, May 11. Donation bins are located in the residence halls, and donations may also be dropped off in the Office of Community Service, located in Wakehurst, Room 201.

Suggested donations include:

  • Kitchen items
  • Small and large appliances
  • Clothing, accessories and shoes
  • Books, old school supplies and desk lamps
  • Rugs, mirrors and decorative items
  • Towels, blankets and linens
  • Large shelves
  • Storage containers
  • Furniture and beds

The office is also accepting unopened food, toiletries and cleaning supplies, which will be donated to the Housing Hotline and the Florence Gray Center.
