Conroy nominated for GEICO’s play of the year

Senior linebacker Matt Conroy’s behind-the-back intercepted 60-yard touchdown run has been nominated for the GEICO play of the year. Each week, fans vote for the play of the year, and the winner will be announced during “GEICO’s Best of College Football 2014,” scheduled to air on CBS at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28.

Each week for five weeks, four incredible college football plays are nominated as the play of the year on the GEICO Best of College Football Facebook page. The five weekly winners will then face off in a week of finals voting Nov. 3-10 to determine the play of the year.

In the Seahawks’ game against Nichols College on Oct. 4, Conroy reached back for an interception of a pass that was thrown behind him. He caught it and ran 60 yards to the end zone to help Salve Regina handily defeat Nichols 48-7.

Alumni office sponsoring Senior Challenge T-shirt design contest

The Office of Alumni/Parent Programs is inviting members of the Class of 2015 to submit their designs for the Senior Challenge T-shirt design contest.

Contest rules:

  • Designs should include “2015” or “Class of 2015” and should celebrate the class and the University.
  • Entries must be submitted in black and white. The T-shirt color will be white, royal blue or green.
  • Entries must be submitted in .eps, .ai or any other vector file format that can be opened and resized in Adobe Illustrator. The winning design will be resized to fit the front of the T-shirts.

Entries must be submitted by midnight Friday, Oct. 31 to alumni@salve.edu.

Voting will be held online for one week. Students must be a member of the Class of 2015 to submit design entries and/or vote.

Multicultural Programs offering safe space training, ally certification

The Office of Multicultural Programs will offer safe space training and ally certification on Wednesday, Oct. 15 and Thursday, Oct. 16. Training and certification are open to all students, faculty and staff.

The first session, “Awareness and Sensitivity for the LGBTQ Community,” will be held from 2:30-5 p.m. Wednesday in the O’Hare Academic Center, Room 221. Participants will learn appropriate language, constructs and theories that apply to the LGBTQ community. Tailored specifically to issues on college campuses, this educational session will serve as the platform for participants to learn more about identifying as an ally.

The second session, “Being an Active Bystander and Ally to the LGBTQ Community,” will be held from 2:30-5 p.m. Thursday in the O’Hare Academic Center, Room 221. In this interactive session, participants will learn what it means to be an ally, how to respond when peers or students are in crisis, resources available to the LGBTQ community and its allies, and make a personal pledge to be an ally.

It is highly recommended that participants attend the first session before attending the second session. If you cannot attend the first session but would like to attend the second session, email sami.nassim@salve.edu.

Participants who attend both sessions will be considered certified allies for the Salve Regina community and will receive an ally certification badge.

Book discussion series continues with “Orthodoxy”

The “Reading Christian Classics” book discussion series will continue Thursday, Oct. 30 with G.K. Chesterton’s “Orthodoxy.” All members of the Salve Regina community, along with friends of the University, are invited to participate.

“Orthodoxy” is a spiritual autobiography that stands as an inspirational apologetic for Christianity. Many Christian thinkers, including C.S. Lewis, have found the book a pivotal step in their adoption of a credible faith. The book is available online.

The series will continue throughout the 2014-2015 academic year, and participants are welcome to attend as many sessions as they wish. The remaining schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday, Nov. 20: “Interior Castle” by Teresa of Avila (available online)
  • Thursday, Feb. 26: “The Power and the Glory” by Graham Greene
  • Thursday, March 26: “Death Comes for the Archbishop” by Willa Cather (available online)
  • Thursday, April 30: “No Man is an Island” by Thomas Merton

Discussions will be held in the McKillop Library’s special collections room beginning at 6:30 p.m. and will last about one hour. Each participant should furnish his or her copy of the book, read it prior to the session and come willing to share interpretations or comments.

Raymond, Gomaa to discuss Arab societies in literature

Dr. Chad Raymond and Dr. Sally Gomaa will discuss depictions of Arab societies in literature during a presentation scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 9. “Lost in Non-Translation: Misrepresentation of the Middle East” will be held at 4 p.m. in the McKillop Library.

American students often encounter the Middle East through novels translated into English. These novels are frequently presented by instructors and understood by students as stylized but accurate depictions of Arab societies as they currently exist. In reality, the extremely limited numbers of translated Arabic novels used in U.S. classrooms perpetuate ahistorical stereotypes that are infused with violence, misogyny and religious fanaticism. Although students may be interested in learning about the contemporary Middle East, the literature they encounter can lead to the reinforcement of existing prejudices rather than complex thought.

Raymond is associate professor of political science and international relations at Salve Regina. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Gomaa is associate professor of English and communications at Salve Regina. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Alexandria University, a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and a Ph.D. in English, rhetoric and composition from the University of Rhode Island.

Panel of historians to discuss legacy of First World War

A panel of Salve Regina historians will discuss the legacy of the First World War, examining how its consequences are still playing out across Eastern Europe and the Middle East 100 years later, including in Iraq and Syria.

“The First World War at 100: Understanding the Cost, Legacy and Meaning of The Great War” will be presented at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall. The discussion will probe the legacy of the First World War in global politics, culture and international relations.

Moderated by Dr. Jim Ludes, executive director of the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy, the panel will include history professors Dr. William Leeman, Dr. Timothy Neary and Dr. John Quinn. Also joining the discussion will be Dr. Maureen Montgomery, the University’s McGinty Chair in history, and Dr. Scott Zeman, provost/vice president for academic affairs.

The defining event of the 20th century was not the Second World War, but the first. The spark that became an inferno was lit 100 years ago this year. The war itself was industrial slaughter on a global scale. It ended empires, ushered in the American century, and redrew maps across Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

The consequences of those lines are still being played out in places like Iraq and Syria today. The war also led to broad social revolutions in the Atlantic world, political revolution in Russia, and, in its failed peacemaking, sowed the seeds of World War II.

Three Seahawks earn conference honors

Congratulations to the following student athletes, who recently received honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference:

Women’s cross country: Aubrey Palmquist ’16

Palmquist was named runner of the week after finishing third overall at the Tri-State Invitational in a time of 20:09. She opened the race with a 6:25 mile and held steady throughout the 5,000-meter grass and trail course. Salve Regina placed its entire scoring five inside the top 10 to win the invitational at the Community College of Rhode Island last Saturday.

Volleyball: Dianna Tauro ’15

Tauro was named libero of the week after averaging 3.91 digs and 0.64 service aces per set in a 3-0 week for the Seahawks. She collected nine digs and six service aces in a 3-0 sweep of conference rival Curry College. Tauro followed with 21 digs in a five-set victory over Johnson and Wales University, and closed out the week with 13 digs in a sweep of Mount Holyoke College.

Field hockey: Brooke Tolley ’18

Tolley was named rookie of the week after tallying the game-winning goal on the road in the Seahawks’ 2-0 victory over conference rival Roger Williams University. For the season, she now has three goals and one assist while playing in all 12 games for Salve Regina.

Dance Marathon seeking committee members for 2015 event

The Dance Marathon is seeking committee members for the 2015 event, which will be held March 21-22. Committee members will work throughout the coming months to plan and fundraise for the 18-hour event.

Dance Marathon is a student-run organization that raises money for pediatric medical care, education and research at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, R.I. During the March event, student participants will remain on their feet for the full 18 hours while participating in games and activities.

Every dollar raised benefits Hasbro and its families. Last year’s fundraising helped to rebuild the Izzy Room, a critical resource that serves as a home away from home for patients’ families during their hospital stay.

Interested students can join one of six planning committees. Applications are available here and should be submitted by Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Roundtable luncheon to explore the nature of art

The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will sponsor a roundtable discussion asking “What is Art?” at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

Is art something that you have to go to a museum to see, or is it all around us? Is there a difference between the Mona Lisa and graffiti art? Is art just about personal expression, or can it be used as a vehicle of political action and change? Does art have to be pretty? Can art make the world a better place?

These are some of the questions that Dr. Anthony Mangieri, assistant professor of art, will discuss during the luncheon. Participants will explore the nature of art and their relation to images in the world from both historical and contemporary perspectives.

Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff, and lunch is provided. As space is extremely limited, those interested in attending should RSVP to pellcenter@salve.edu.
