Beginning Sept. 20, Health Services will offer Saturday hours throughout the academic year. Appointments may be scheduled between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Health Services also schedules appointments from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Walk-ins for emergencies are accommodated as much as possible.

All undergraduate students are eligible to utilize Health Services. Most primary care services are free for full-time students, although students are responsible for the cost of prescription drugs, immunizations and some medical supplies. Students should bring their Salve Regina ID and proof of prescription insurance to all visits.

During non-office hours, or in emergency situations, students should go to the Newport Hospital emergency room or call 911 or the University’s emergency line at (401) 341-2325.

Members of the Class of 2016 are invited to participate in Junior Jumpstart, a program that will provide the skills and knowledge necessary for students to be better prepared for their future educational and career plans.

Junior Jumpstart will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 in the O’Hare Academic Center. Co-sponsored by the Center for Student Development and the Office of Career Development, the program will feature guest speakers and interactive breakout sessions that will explore topics such as internships, professional development and preparing for graduate school.

Immediately following the program, the Office of Alumni/Parent Programs will host the Class of 2016 “Halfway There” celebration filled with free food, friends and festivities.

Tentative schedule:

• 8:30-9 a.m. – Registration and check-in
• 9-9:30 a.m. – Welcome and opening ceremony. Receive a class pin, reconnect with classmates and begin a new tradition.
• 9:30-10:30 a.m. – Keynote speaker: Daniel Seddiqui. Discover helpful tips and career inspiration from Daniel Seddiqui, nationally recognized author of “50 Jobs in 50 States.”
• 10:40 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. – Breakout sessions. Learn from the experiences of Salve Regina students, faculty, staff and alumni about internships, professional development skills and preparing for graduate school.
• 12:45 p.m. – Class of 2016 “Halfway There” celebration with free food, friends and festivities.

All juniors are encouraged to participate in this new program that creates tradition and celebrates the halfway point to graduation. Students may register online for this event through the Salve Regina Gateway. Students enrolled in the university symposium Robotics: The Professional Considerations of Global Business will review conceptual drawings of the passive robotic devices they intend to build for a unique “egg drop” challenge next week. The poster board session will be held in the O’Hare Academic Center lobby from 8-8:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19.

Using feedback and comments from their classmates, the students will finalize assembly plans for instruments to be used in a competition at O’Hare at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, when they will launch eggs from a second-story window in an effort to land them unharmed on the pavement below using only passive robotics. Unlike traditional egg drop challenges, students in this competition will not be permitted to use protective padding.

“Students must use passive robotics to bring the egg safely to rest on the hard pavement below,” explains Dr. Michael Thombs, associate professor of business studies and economics. “They may use wheels, pulleys, levers, rotors, slingshots, shock absorbers, etc., but they may not use passive non-moving instruments such as helium fill balloons, parachutes, protective foam and other forms of padding.”

Where else but in college can young adults learn so much, meet so many people and have so much fun? “Hookup sex” is a big part of this culture, but while it’s supposed to come with no strings attached, this form of frequent, casual sex can create an enormous amount of stress and drama among participants, says author and lecturer Donna Freitas.

Freitas will bring her message to Salve Regina when she presents “The Truth About Hookup Culture (and Figuring Out the Meaning of Sex Within It)” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

Freitas, who taught religion at Boston University and Hofstra University, has written many books, both nonfiction and fiction, including “Sex and the Soul: Juggling Sexuality, Spirituality, Romance and Religion on America’s College Campuses.” She is currently a non-resident research associate at the University of Notre Dame’s Center for the Study of Religion and Society.

Additionally, she has written for several national newspapers and magazines, including the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Boston Globe and Newsweek. She has also been invited to discuss her work on NPR, The Today Show and other media outlets.

Her talk is sponsored by Athletics, the Department of Religious and Theological Studies, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, the First Year Experience program and the Office of Student Affairs.

The Student Government Association is seeking candidates for 2014-2015 senate positions. Nomination packets are available online, in the SGA office in Wakehurst (Room 203), or the Office of Student Activities in Wakehurst (Room 012).

Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:

• Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at Salve Regina as of the time of the election, and must maintain eligibility per the SGA constitution.
• Must not be on probation, either academic or behavioral, as determined by University regulations.
• Must not hold more than one executive or legislative office within the student government at a time.

Nomination packets should be submitted to the Office of Student Activities by 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18. A mandatory campaign meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Wakehurst, Room 204. Active campaigning may not begin until after the meeting.

Online elections will be held from 7 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 through 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25. All full-time undergraduates are eligible to vote.
