SRyou proposal deadline approaching

The deadline to submit proposals for the eighth annual SRyou Student Exposition is Thursday, Feb. 1. An all-day event scheduled for Wednesday, March 21, SRyou will consist of two concurrent sessions of presentations, performances and exhibitions featuring the work of students.

All undergraduate students are invited to submit proposals for any classwork, research, internships, service learning, study abroad or artistic, music or theater work they would like to showcase in the exhibition. Students can develop proposals as individuals, in groups or as representatives of campus organizations.

Through participating in this exposition, students benefit by:

  • Showcasing their academic, artistic and altruistic endeavors.
  • Developing professional presentation skills.
  • Enhancing their resumes.
  • Discovering the scope and diversity of the achievements of their peers.

Award-winning documentary investigates impacts of climate change

An award-winning documentary that examines the intersection of fossil fuels, climate change and national security will be screened this week at Salve Regina.

Billed as “The Hurt Locker” meets “An Inconvenient Truth,” “The Age of Consequences” investigates the impacts of climate change on increased resource scarcity, migration and conflict through the lens of U.S. national security and global stability.

Hosted by Citizens Climate Lobby Rhode Island in partnership with the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy, the screening will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall. To RSVP, visit the Pell Center’s Eventbrite page.

Through unflinching case-study analysis, distinguished admirals, generals and military veterans take us beyond the headlines of the conflict in Syria, the social unrest of the Arab Spring, the rise of radicalized groups like ISIS, and the European refugee crisis – and lay bare how climate change stressors interact with societal tensions, sparking conflict.

Whether a long-term vulnerability or sudden shock, the film unpacks how water and food shortages, drought, extreme weather and sea-level rise function as “accelerants of instability” and “catalysts for conflict” in volatile regions of the world.

These Pentagon insiders make the compelling case that if we go on with business as usual, the consequences of climate change – waves of refugees, failed states, terrorism – will continue to grow in scale and frequency, with grave implications for peace and security in the 21st century. The film’s unnerving assessment is by no means reason for fatalism – but instead a call to action to rethink how we use and produce energy.

Seahawks land 38 on football academic all-conference squad

The football team has landed 38 student-athletes on the 2017 Commonwealth Coast Conference academic all-conference team. In order to be recognized, an athlete must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must have attained sophomore status.

“Thirty-eight players is a new school record,” said head coach Kevin Gilmartin. “We always talk about our players taking their work ethic from football and applying it to the classroom, and this is proof how the Salve football family continues to work to become champions on and off the field.”

International Programs offering scholarships for study abroad

The Office of International Programs has announced several new scholarship opportunities for students interested in studying abroad in summer or fall 2018 or spring 2019.

Summer 2018 Competitions

  • Dominican Republic scholarships: Up to 10 students will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend Salve’s summer program in the Dominican Republic. The application deadline is Thursday, Feb. 15. Interested students should complete the short-term program application by this date.

Summer/Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 Competitions

  • Generation Study Abroad travel grants: Applications for these $2,000 awards are due Wednesday, March 7. Applications are available online.
  • Benjamin Gilman Scholarship: Applications for these awards of up to $5,000 are due Tuesday, March 6. Applications are available online.
  • Salve Regina semester study abroad scholarships. There are multiple internal competitions and award amounts vary. Applications are due March 1 for fall and academic year programs. Applications are available online.

Interested students should review the above websites for eligibility requirements and may seek further assistance through the Office of International Programs.

Seahawks ranked No. 2 in latest national poll

The men’s rugby team was ranked second overall in the latest National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) Top 40 list.

The Seahawks went 12-0 in the fall, capturing the Colonial Coast Rugby Conference championship and advancing to the National Final Four after winning the NSCRO East Regionals.

The Seahawks will travel to Life University in Marietta, Georgia April 27-29 to compete for the 2018 Men’s Champions Cup national championship. The Seahawks were the 2012 Division III NSCRO champions.

Looking for an opportunity to make a difference and/or complete your required community service hours? Consider joining Learning Unlimited, an educational program that promotes an inclusive learning community at Salve Regina by fostering an accessible and welcoming environment for people with developmental disabilities.

Learning Unlimited creates opportunities for undergraduate students and people with developmental disabilities to learn from each other through education, recreation and socialization.

This year’s Learning Unlimited program is titled “Skills for Living and Working.” Through multiple weekly workshop options, participants will engage in a process of self-discovery and heightened self-awareness, and will explore career paths that inspire them.

Learning Unlimited is well suited for students majoring in business, education, nursing, psychology, social work or sociology and anthropology, and may be taken for credit.

Author Ann Hood hosting afternoon of writing and conversation

Members of the University community and the general public are invited to join Rhode Island native Ann Hood – the best-selling author of 14 novels, three memoirs and books for young adults – for an afternoon of conversation and writing from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27.

The event, which celebrates the launch of the Newport MFA at Salve – the state’s first low-residency master of fine arts degree program in creative writing – will be held in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall. Hood, who serves as the founding director of the new 48-credit MFA program, will offer a glimpse into her writing process and conduct short breakout sessions of personal writing and discussion.

The event will be followed by a reception of desserts and beverages, and Hood will be available to sign her books. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP to salve.edu/annhood.

“The Newport MFA is thrilled to throw open the doors and invite all literary types to join us in our first public event,” said Jen McClanaghan, Salve’s writer-in-residence and the Newport MFA’s program director. “Not only are we celebrating our new degree program, we are gathering to talk about the writing life while fostering community among local authors, poets, memoirists, those who aspire to be, and those who just love to read.”

The Newport MFA begins in June, offering aspiring writers the opportunity to pursue the terminal degree in their field by attending eight-day residencies in Newport twice a year (with an optional winter residency being offered in Havana, Cuba) that will connect them with established professionals in a location steeped in literary history. Henry James, Thornton Wilder and Edith Wharton are among those to be inspired by Newport.

Salve Regina students volunteering with Newport County Youth Chorus

Several of Salve Regina’s music majors are building on their coursework by volunteering with the Newport County Youth Chorus, which is preparing to present its inaugural concert on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Founded in 2017 and directed by Elizabeth Woodhouse, the Newport County Youth Chorus aims to provide an exceptional choral music education program to local youth, to provide teaching opportunities and mentorship to Salve Regina music majors and to create a community arts organization that serves and connects the Newport County community.

Currently, music majors Elizabeth Getts ’18, Nicole Horsman ’18 and Zoe Michalopoulos ’19 are working with the chorus as mentors and assistants to Woodhouse.

The concert will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Newport’s Emmanuel Church, located at the corner of Spring and Dearborn streets. The concert will also feature Salve Regina’s mixed a cappella group MixTapes, co-facilitated by Horsman and Julia Bowman ’18.
