Dr. Cedric de Leon, an associate professor of sociology at Tufts University, will discuss the rise of Donald Trump’s economic nationalism and compare it with related movements in “A Comparative Analysis of Left, Right and Failed Ethnic Nationalism.”

Sponsored by the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy, his lecture will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

The rise of Donald Trump is just one case of a wider phenomenon. To understand contemporary American politics, it must be placed in comparative context. De Leon’s presentation will put Trump’s economic nationalism alongside the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party in India, the Movement for Socialism in Bolivia and the Reform Party in Canada.

Before arriving at Tufts, de Leon served as chairman of the sociology department at Providence College. He is the author of “The Origins of Right to Work” and “Party and Society,” and is co-editor of “Building Blocs” with Manali Desai and Cihan Tugal. De Leon has served in numerous elected and appointed posts in the American Sociological Association and Social Science History Association, and sits on the editorial boards of Contemporary Sociology and Social Problems.

The sources of Chinese nationalism will be the subject of an upcoming roundtable discussion sponsored by the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.

Moderated by Dr. Symeon Giannakos, professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations, the discussion will be held at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28 in the O’Hare Academic Building, Room 242.

Participants will gauge the extent to which Chinese nationalism contributes to cooperation or confrontation in China’s foreign relations.

#GivingTuesday started after a group of friends, partners and philanthropy experts, led by the 92nd Street Y, came together to find ways to promote and celebrate the great American tradition of giving. Thought leaders in philanthropy, social media and grassroots organizing joined to explore what is working in modern philanthropy and how to expand these innovations throughout the philanthropic sector.

The Pell Honors Program will sponsor an upcoming documentary screening focusing on residents in Vila Autodromo, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro that was decimated as the city prepared to host the 2016 Olympics.

“Dirty Games: Olympic Evictions in Rio de Janeiro” will be shown at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall. The screening is open to the University community and the general public.

Directed by social anthropologists Jose Alejandro Huidobro Goya and Margit Ystanes, the film explores topics such as what it means to lose a home, the anguish this loss produces, and the role of sporting mega-events on urban development and inequality.

Working with local and international activists, journalists, researchers and filmmakers, the residents succeeded in catapulting their struggle to remain in Vila Autodromo onto the world stage. The film examines the context for these events – the Olympics as a vehicle for urban development, corruption, inequality and global trends – prioritizing profit rather than human needs in the use of land.

The most important question explored in the film, however, is why the resistance to leave Vila Autodromo was so strong. What is lost when homes and neighborhoods are destroyed?

The Angel Trees, from which individuals pick a tag and purchase a gift item for a local child in need, have once again appeared throughout campus. All members of the Salve Regina community are invited to participate in the Angel Tree program.

Angel Trees are located in McAuley Hall, McKillop Library, Mercy Center for Spiritual Life, Miley Hall, O’Hare Academic Building, Rodgers Recreation Center, Wakehurst, Young Building and the Center for Adult Education in Warwick. Gifts will benefit children in need through Child & Family, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, Salvation Army and the Tashirat Orphanage in Mexico.

Tags on the trees list a child’s name, age and wish. Donors are asked to choose a tag from the tree, purchase a gift and return it in a gift bag or unwrapped to the Office of Community Service in Wakehurst, Room 201 before 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14. Please make sure to attach the label to the gift.
