Salve Regina’s EMT Club promotes the knowledge, understanding and interest of emergency medicine through lectures, events and activities geared to students’ interests.

The EMT Club will host its annual mock car crash at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 19 in front of McAuley Hall. Designed to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted and impaired driving, the event simulates a DUI accident and includes responders from the Newport police and fire departments. Each year, Rhode Island Towing donates a totaled car, allowing both departments to demonstrate how they respond to an actual crash.

The club has also hosted multiple CPR, first aid and defibrillator courses; management of aggressive behavior training; and lectures on tactical combat casualty care.

The club has been a recognized student organization since 2015. The group includes:

Gabrielle Kuba ’18, a biology major at Salve Regina, has been honored as a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, the Boston-based nonprofit organization supporting civic engagement on college campuses throughout the country.

As a fellowship recipient, Kuba will participate in a variety of learning and networking opportunities designed to enhance personal, professional and civic growth, including attending the national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate.

Since arriving at Salve Regina, Kuba has been passionate about environmental causes through both her volunteerism and academic pursuits. She has worked with Clean Ocean Access and Save the Bay to clean up marine environments and track pollutants. As a facilitator for Salve Regina’s Service Plunge 2.0, she has spearheaded watershed cleanup efforts at Bailey’s Brook in Middletown.

Through her academic research, Kuba has been tracking nutrient levels in Narragansett Bay, which she has found to be elevated due to increasing runoff, adversely impacting two species of seaweed that she’s studying. “In the last 10 years, we’ve been finding that these two species of seaweed are growing out of control, which is not good for the environment or for ecological balance,” she said.

Kuba is a member of Mercy in Motion, Protect Our Wildlife and the Environmental Club. She participated in the University’s community service trip to Nicaragua to assist individuals in the Mustard Seed Orphanage. She also works in gardens and parks near campus and supports a local animal shelter to care for animals seeking homes.

“Gabrielle has always been a spirited and hardworking young woman,” said President Jane Gerety, RSM, who nominated Kuba for the Newman Fellowship. “Over the past three years, I have watched her mature into a strong leader with the ability to get the job done. She has been an inspiration, leading the way in support of many worthwhile causes. She not only has a personal commitment to support social and environmental causes, but also has the ability to get other people involved and committed to service.”

As a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow, Kuba will be a part of the first cohort to benefit from a completely redesigned fellowship. Named for Campus Compact co-founder Frank Newman, the fellowship is a one-year experience emphasizing personal, professional and civic growth. In addition to offering learning and networking opportunities, the fellowship also provides fellows with access to exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.

In recognition of Earth Week, several student organizations are planning a series of events focusing on environmental and climate literacy.

Panel discussion

6 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, McKillop Library first floor

Protect Our Wildlife will host this panel discussion about a segment from the film “Arise: Women Healing the Environment,” which depicts women from the Green Belt movement in Kenya. Student panelists Jillian Chin, Patricia Soccarras, Richard Tegtmeier and Skyla Hudson will discuss how environmentalism can share a relationship with each of their majors. The evening will also include a raffle for an Apple Watch.

Busking Day

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, various campus locations

Musicians, poets and actors will share their talents by doing street performances at six locations around campus. Each location will highlight a current environmental issue. All members of the University community are invited to participate. Interested performers should sign up in Angelus Hall or email richard.tegtmeier@salve.edu for a time and location.

Film screening: “Before the Flood”

7 p.m. Thursday, April 20, O’Hare Academic Building, Room 260

“Before the Flood” follows Leonardo DiCaprio as he travels around the world meeting with scientists, activists and global leaders to learn more about global climate change and seek solutions. The Environmental Club will host a “tap water challenge” prior to the screening. Participants will attempt to taste the difference between tap and bottled water to raise awareness of how our daily actions contribute to environmental issues.

Earth Day exhibition

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 21, O’Hare Academic Building lobby

Representatives from organizations in the Salve Regina and Newport communities will highlight how their work relates to environmental issues. Vendors include Empire Tea and Coffee, the Aquidneck Land Trust, McKillop Library, Environmental Club, Protect Our Wildlife Club, A Better Tomorrow Club, Student Government Association, Sodexo, Clean Ocean Access, Norman Bird Sanctuary, Hydroponics Lab, Save the Bay, the Arboretum Committee, GIFT club, the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life. The exhibition will also include class presentations and music from WSRU.

The Center for Student Development invites undergraduate students to participate in the “Salve Spring Open Challenge” on Portfolium to win prizes and showcase their skills and accomplishments from their Salve Regina experience.

As part of this challenge, students are invited to submit an entry to display their best paper, project, research, internship work, leadership experience, volunteer work or presentation this year. Students can share their entry with others to collect votes, and a group of staff and faculty will select the top three entries to win the following prizes:

• First place: $100 bookstore gift card
• Second place: $50 bookstore gift card
• Third place: $25 bookstore gift card

The Center for Student Development is working with Portfolium to provide all undergraduate students with access to a cloud-based ePortfolio with social networking features. Portfolium gives students the ability to create an organized, visual documentation of their academic, co-curricular and professional stories and works. Students will continue to have access to their Portfolium profiles after graduation and can share their portfolios with peers, faculty, future employers, graduate programs and many more outlets.

Students can create their Portfolium profiles using the email invitation that was sent to their Salve Regina email account on April 6. The Center for Student Development plans to work with departments across campus to help students develop their digital portfolio and capture their leadership and co-curricular experiences and accomplishments.

The Dean of Students Office is accepting applications for its student conduct hearing board for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Students who serve on the student conduct hearing board take on a leadership role by helping to uphold the University’s student code of conduct, and hold non-adversarial hearings for alleged violations of the code of conduct.

The Dean of Students Office sees the value and importance of student input on community expectations and is excited to offer this opportunity to its students. This is one of the most thought-provoking and rewarding ways a student can serve the Salve Regina community.

Having a previous conduct record does not necessarily preclude a student from serving on the student conduct hearing board. These decisions will be made at the discretion of the Dean of Students Office.
