Faculty, staff and graduate students are encouraged to attend any or all of the dissertation defense presentations scheduled this semester. In addition, any undergraduate students who may be considering the pursuit of a Ph.D. are welcome to attend.

Those interested may view a copy of the documents in person by making an appointment with Melissa Davis, coordinator of special academic projects and programs. She may be reached at melissa.davis@salve.edu.

All presentations will be held in the McKillop Library’s special collections room.

Tom Choinski will defend his dissertation at 4 p.m. Friday, March 10. The dissertation is titled “Dramaturgy, Wargaming and Technological Innovation in the United States Navy: Four Historical Case Studies.”

Garrett Dell will defend his dissertation at 1 p.m. Friday, March 31. The dissertation is titled “Ambivalence toward Technology in Robert Pinsky’s Poetry.”

James Ricci will defend his dissertation at 1 p.m. Friday, April 7. The dissertation is titled “A Monument to Perseverance: The Struggle to Build the Newport Bridge, 1945-1969.”

Sasha Ruggieri will defend her dissertation at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 7. The dissertation is titled “Social Transformation Through Art: Slow Food Ideology and the Social Protest Novel.”

Salve Regina’s mission committee is sponsoring the annual “Faces of Mercy” contest and is inviting all members of the University community to submit entries depicting what mercy means to them.

Entries may be submitted in a variety of formats, including photos, artwork, story and poem. All submissions must be in hard copy with a maximum size of 11×17 inches, although pictures of original artwork are acceptable. Submissions will be retained by the committee.

Prizes include $100 for first place, $75 for second place, $50 for third place and $25 for honorable mention. Entries are due Friday, March 24. Submissions should be brought to the Department of Business Studies and Economics in the O’Hare Academic Building, Room 136.

The corporal works of mercy are:

• Feed the hungry
• Give drink to the thirsty
• Clothe the naked
• Harbor the harborless
• Visit the sick
• Ransom the captive
• Bury the dead

The spiritual works of mercy are:

• Instruct the ignorant
• Counsel the doubtful
• Admonish sinners

The role that algorithms play in major areas of our lives will be the subject of an upcoming roundtable discussion sponsored by the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.

“Is Your Life Decided by an Algorithm?” will be held at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, March 7 in the Miley Hall executive dining room. This is an approved Navigator event fulfilling the core value of consciousness of self.

Have you ever been denied credit or a loan? The chances are that the decision was made not by a human being, but by a complex algorithm using available information about your behavior. Algorithms also make major decisions in the justice system and in the realms of health and global finance.

The roundtable will be moderated by Dr. Sean O’Callaghan, assistant professor in the Department of Religious and Theological Studies, and Francis Quigley, research analyst at the Pell Center.

Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff. The Pell Center provides a free lunch. As space is limited, those interested in attending should RSVP to (401) 341-2927 or pellcenter@salve.edu.

Wajahat Ali, an award-winning playwright and former host and contributor to Al Jazeera America, will present “Fear of the Muslim Planet: Islamophobia, Resilience and Hope in Trump’s America” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

Free and open to the public, Ali’s lecture is sponsored by the Mosaic student newspaper. A question-and-answer session will follow the lecture.

As creative director of Affinis Labs, Ali works to create social entrepreneurship initiatives that have a positive impact for marginalized communities, and to empower social entrepreneurs, young leaders, creatives and communities to come up with innovative solutions to tackle world problems.

Previously, Ali helped launch the Al Jazeera America network as co-host of Al Jazeera America’s “The Stream.” He was also a national correspondent, political reporter and social media expert for the network. Ali is the author of “The Domestic Crusaders,” which was performed off-Broadway and at the Kennedy Center, and is writing a television show about a Muslim American cop in the Bay Area.

In 2012, Ali worked with the U.S. Department of State to design and implement the “Generation Change” leadership program to empower young social entrepreneurs. He initiated chapters in eight countries, including Pakistan and Singapore. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Atlantic, Washington Post, the Guardian and Salon.

Members of the University community are invited to attend lecture presentations by two faculty candidates for Salve Regina’s Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural and Historic Preservation Program.

The candidates will discuss how their professional work influences their teaching. Elaine Brown Stiles will speak at 3 p.m. Monday, March 6 and Dr. Jeroen van den Hurk will speak at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 8. Both presentations will be held in the DiStefano Lecture Hall.

Stiles will receive her Ph.D. in May from the University of California at Berkeley, with thesis work on the history of architecture and urbanism. She holds an M.A. in preservation studies from Boston University and an M.A. and B.A. in art history from Smith College.

Van den Hurk received his Ph.D. in art history from the University of Delaware, with dissertation studies on Netherlandic architecture in old New York. He holds an M.A. from the Department of Architectural History at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Extensions Dance Company, directed by assistant professor Lindsay Guarino, will celebrate its 10th anniversary with performances at the Casino Theatre March 2-4. Since its inception, Extensions has become known for its athletic, dynamic aesthetic and its commitment to jazz and contemporary concert dance styles.

The weekend’s program will include a range of eclectic choreography from invited guest artists, faculty, notable alumni and current students. Guests include jazz artists Melanie George of Jazz is…Dance Project, Joshua Blake Carter of Giordano Dance Chicago and Los Angeles-based Kirsten Harvey. Contemporary artists include New York City-based Rae-Ann Thomas and Kat Pantos of the Boston-based Pantos Project.

Additional choreographers include Haley Andrews ’18 and Emmaline Concordia ’17, while Olivia Gormley ’17 and Allison Lavoie ’17 will perform solos. In addition, Cayley Christoforou ’15 will present her work “Seek, Seeking, Sought,” which premiered in 2016.

The dance program’s junior company, Extensions II, will also present a new work in the concert by adjunct faculty member Melody Gamba.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with an additional matinee at 2 p.m. Saturday.
