Willow seeking submissions, hosting workshop

The Willow, Salve Regina’s literary magazine, is seeking student submissions of artwork, photography, poetry and prose. Submissions will be accepted through Monday, Feb. 20 at thewillowliterarymagazine.submittable.com.

Due to an overflow of submissions last semester, the editors are now asking that each student submit no more than four pieces of work per submission period.

The Willow is also partnering with the Modern Ink creative writing club to host a writers’ workshop from 2-4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 in the McKillop Library. Pizza will be served and a goodie bag will be provided to all who RSVP. Interested writers can RSVP and send their works to willow.magazine@gmail.com.

The Willow holds weekly meetings in the Antone Academic Center, Room 122 at 8 p.m. Tuesdays. Students who are interested in editing written works or gaining experience with social media management and graphic design are welcome to attend.

Archaeological field school returning to Rhode Island this summer

Salve Regina’s annual summer field school in archaeology will return to Rhode Island this year to explore the unique historical and cultural landscapes of South County and Newport.

“This year I wanted to explore some of the incredible history that we have right here in Rhode Island,” said Dr. Jon Marcoux, assistant professor in the Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural and Historic Preservation Program. “With tons of well-preserved colonial buildings and landscapes, Newport and South County make such amazing backdrops to teach about the past.”

Participants will focus on the site of an 18th century plantation in North Kingstown to learn more about the daily lives of the enslaved people who lived and worked there. “Because archaeology is a hands-on field, we will literally be uncovering the remains of these folks’ daily lives – the tools they used, the plates they ate from, the bottles and cups they drank from,” Marcoux said.

Participants will also take field trips to historically significant sites associated with slavery in colonial Rhode Island. “My goal is for students to see how archaeology can help us to appreciate the complexity of Rhode Island’s history,” Marcoux said. “I also want them to see that many parts of the colonial landscape survive to this day, and that we need to preserve and explore these remnants to tell the full story of our shared past – including slavery.”

Marcoux’s decision to move the field school to Rhode Island this year is part of a broader strategy to make the experience accessible to as many students as possible. No previous archaeological experience is required, and Marcoux has worked with the Office of International Programs to make the program affordable.

Participants have the option to stay on campus in the Hedges or they may commute. The resident cost is $3,950 for the six-credit program and $2,695 for the three-credit program, while the commuter cost is $2,735 for the six-credit program and $1,480 for the three-credit program.

The course fulfills an elective requirement for American studies, cultural and historic preservation and sociology and anthropology majors, and a Core Curriculum requirement for all other majors.

The four-week program will run from May 22 through June 16. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Feb. 15. To learn more, see the program brochure or visit the study abroad website.

Volunteers are needed from noon to 2 p.m. to help Clean Ocean Access with a cleanup at Sachuest (Second) Beach. Van transportation is provided. Pick up at Miley Hall at 11:45 a.m., return at 2 p.m.

Tuesday, Feb. 7: Emmanuel Church soup kitchen

Volunteers are needed from 4:30-6:30 p.m. to set up, work and clean up the soup kitchen.

Tuesday, Feb. 14: Lucy’s Hearth

“Crafty” volunteers are needed from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Wakehurst, Room 201 to make fleece tie blankets and cupcake onesies for Lucy’s Hearth. Volunteers will help assemble both gifts into packages. Transportation is not available for this on-campus event.

Tuesday, Feb. 14: St. Paul’s Warm Up Wednesday

Volunteers are needed from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Mercy Center kitchen to make sweet treats for St. Paul’s Church’s Warm Up Wednesday program. All baking supplies will be provided. Transportation is not available for this on-campus event.

ADJ department opens new digital forensics lab

Salve Regina’s broader cyber community of students, faculty, business leaders and state dignitaries gathered Wednesday, Jan. 25 to celebrate the opening of the Department of Administration of Justice’s new digital forensics lab.

The dedicated lab rounds out the University’s classroom-based instruction to provide future cybersecurity and digital forensics professionals with the hands-on training they need to fill crucial jobs in this emergent field. Training offered through the lab will also prepare students for the demanding industry-driven certifying examinations specific to the fields of cybersecurity and digital forensics.

“Salve’s made a big investment here building out this lab and devoting a dedicated space to the forensics program,” said lecturer Brandon Catalan, who is teaching Mobile Forensics at the graduate level and Principles of Forensics at the undergraduate level this semester. “Anyone who walks in will see the monitors, the keyboards, the projector and screen. What you don’t see is the server room behind me. We have our own dedicated server space, our own dedicated servers. There’s proprietary software loaded onto each one of these desktops. We’ve got the Cellebrite mobile forensics gear here. And that’s just the beginning.”

Salve Regina is one of two higher education institutions in New England to be named an official partner of Cellebrite, the Israeli company that gained notoriety when the FBI turned to it to hack into the iPhone of Syed Rizwan Farook, one of two people involved in the murder of 14 people in San Bernardino, California in December 2015. Through its partnership with Salve Regina, the company has shipped its mobile forensics hardware and software to the new lab.

With another grant, the University is purchasing new FRED (Forensic Recovery of Evidence Device) machines – workstations that will allow students to quickly image multiple hard drives at once. “Those FRED machines are being used now in some of the larger companies out there – the Deloittes, the Raytheons – companies that have millions of dollars to devote to cybersecurity and digital forensics,” Catalan said. “Salve’s making that investment right now. We want everything in this lab to mimic what’s in the real world. What the students are going to come in here and learn, the software that they’re going to learn on, the hardware that they’re going to learn on, they can automatically and instantaneously transition over to an employer right when they walk out these doors.”

Looking ahead, Catalan envisions the lab benefiting not just cyber students in the ADJ program, but all Salve Regina students. Many academic areas and businesses can benefit from cybersecurity training, including law, health care administration, insurance, public policy and international relations.

The new lab operates completely separately from the University’s network, which is essential since the new teaching environment will include simulating cyber issues as network, malware and key-logging attacks, virus inoculation and detection and more. Internet protective and detective systems will be studied. Digital forensics analysis, capable of being upheld in a court of law, will be an important aspect of this practice-based instruction as well.

“We can offer students the ability to work on real cases – real law enforcement cases, real terror threat cases,” Catalan said. “We want to be able to carve out a classified environment for government research to happen here. That’s down the road, but beginning with this space, the tools we have right now, with the momentum we have with enrollment and new faculty, I think it’s going to happen a lot sooner than later.”

Pants drive puts focus on suicide prevention

Members of the Salve Regina community are invited to donate new or gently used pants to the Office of Community Service’s “Stepping Out of Darkness” pants drive.

“We hope to inspire action for suicide prevention with our goal to exhibit 1,100 pairs of pants to represent the number of students on college campuses that commit suicide every year,” said Kathleen Rendos, community service coordinator. “This project is in hopes that our students who need resources realize they are not walking alone.”

The office is aiming to collect 1,100 pairs of pants by Saturday, March 25. The pants will be displayed on a path from Miley Hall to the O’Hare Academic Building on Wednesday March 29 during the SRyou Student Exhibition.

Statistics, messages of hope, and stories of those who have been impacted by suicide will also be included. Following the exhibition, the pants will be donated to local community members.

All types of pants will be accepted. Donations may be dropped off at the Office of Community Service, located in Wakehurst, Room 201. To schedule a pickup of larger donations, call (401) 341-2440.

Mercy Center hosting discussions on Thomas Merton, peacemaking

The Mercy Center for Spiritual Life invites members of the University community to participate in a four-part discussion series based on John Dear’s book “Thomas Merton, Peacemaker.”

The sessions will explore Thomas Merton and the practices of contemplative nonviolence, active nonviolence, prophetic nonviolence and visionary nonviolence. Each session will include a video presentation by Dear along with time for reflection and discussion.

Dear has spent more than three decades speaking to people around the world about the way of nonviolence and the call to make peace. He has traveled to war zones, engaged in acts of civil disobedience against war and, in 1990, arranged for Mother Teresa to speak to various governors to stop the death penalty. Dear’s reflections on the writings of Thomas Merton are insightful and challenging.

Discussions will be held at noon on four consecutive Tuesdays – Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, 14 and 21 – in the Miley Hall executive dining room. The Mercy Center will provide lunch. To register, email annamae.mayer@salve.edu.

Roundtable to explore Russia, future of Trump administration

Russia, the 2016 election and the future of the Trump administration will be the subject of an upcoming roundtable discussion sponsored by the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.

“Political Warfare” will be held at 11:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27 in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

The Russian government is engaged in political warfare with the West. Its goals are to undermine the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union. The U.S. intelligence community has reported that Russia intervened in the U.S. election to support the candidacy of Donald Trump. During the roundtable, participants will look at the specific methods Russia has employed and discuss how the United States can push back.

Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff. The Pell Center provides a free lunch. As space is limited, those interested in attending should RSVP to (401) 341-2927 or pellcenter@salve.edu.

Consider joining Learning Unlimited, an educational program that promotes an inclusive learning community at Salve Regina by fostering an accessible and welcoming environment for people with developmental disabilities.

Learning Unlimited creates opportunities for undergraduate students and people with developmental disabilities to learn from each other through education, recreation and socialization.

This year’s Learning Unlimited program is titled “Skills for Living and Working.” Through multiple weekly workshop options, participants will engage in a process of self-discovery and heightened self-awareness, and will explore career paths that inspire them.

Learning Unlimited is well suited for students majoring in business, education, nursing, psychology, social work or sociology and anthropology, and may be taken for credit.

“Curious & Collected” features items from private, public collections

The Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery has announced the opening of “Curious & Collected,” an interdisciplinary exhibition about collecting and its ties to Newport.

“Curious & Collected” builds on the “cabinets of wonder” tradition, drawing a disparate array of images and objects together into a dynamic singular exhibit. Within the space of the main gallery, creative work ranging from 8,000 B.C. through the 20th century appeals to the viewer’s imagination. Each of the several dozen curiosities on view tells a unique story and elicits a sense of wonder.

The exhibition runs from Thursday, Jan. 26 through Wednesday, March 8. On Thursday, Jan. 26, the campus community and the general public are invited to an opening
 reception, which will run from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery.

Loans from several private and public collections made this exhibition possible. The Newport Historical Society contributed artifacts ranging from miniature Egyptian figurines to a Masonic vessel rich in symbols. Avid Newport collector James Baker shared a number of images that he associates with the mythical winged figure of Icarus. Selections include rare book engravings, black and white photographs and an original New York City subway window tagged by Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Several automatons and porcelain half-dolls are on loan from the collection of Nicholas and Shelley Schorsch. And Salve Regina’s Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural and Historic Preservation Program provided a number of archaeological artifacts, including beads from a French fort in Alabama as well as pottery fragments and other handiwork from Native American sites.

The exhibition serves as the focus of a special topics course in art history at Salve Regina. Curatorial practices and the gallery experience will be the subject of a course co-taught by Dr. Anthony F. Mangieri and Ernest Jolicoeur.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The gallery is closed on Mondays.
