Semester in Service program seeking volunteers

The Office of Community Service is seeking volunteers for its Semester in Service program, which connects dedicated and motivated Salve Regina students with nonprofit organizations in need of long-term volunteers.

For the spring 2017 semester, Semester in Service will run from Jan. 23 through May 5. During these 11 weeks, students will volunteer weekly at the nonprofit organization of their choice. Transportation will be provided to all service sites (except during national holidays and/or University closings).

Interested students should register for the program by Monday, Jan. 30. For more information, visit the Semester in Service webpage or contact the Office of Community Service at (401) 341-2440 or community.services@salve.edu.

Available programs include:

Child & Family: Students are needed from noon to 5 p.m. Mondays and/or 12:15-4 p.m. or 2:30-5:30 p.m. Wednesdays to serve as additional staff support in Child & Family’s early care and education center. Volunteers will work in classrooms with teachers to support all aspects of the day-to-day duties within an early childhood classroom setting.

Potter League for Animals: Students are needed from 9-11:45 a.m. Tuesdays and/or Thursdays to assist with daily morning cleaning, obedience training for dogs, training and socialization for cats, bunny socialization, clerical assistance, and outdoor projects such as landscaping and painting.

Salvation Army: Students are needed from 2:30-5 p.m. Sundays and/or 3-6:30 p.m. Fridays to assist with weekly soup kitchens and basic day-to-day duties.

HR sponsoring yoga classes for faculty and staff

Certified instructor Christine Reed will lead hatha yoga classes for faculty and staff throughout the spring 2017 semester. Classes will be held in the Ochre Court library at 5 p.m. Mondays through May 1 (no class Feb. 20).

Beginners are welcome to attend. Hatha yoga focuses on breathing, stretching and strengthening to support physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat and blanket (or large towel) to each class.

The cost is $150 for 15 classes, with one free make-up class. Walk-ins are welcome at $15 per session. Cash and checks made payable to Salve Regina University are accepted. A payroll deduction option is also available.

Writers Resist focuses on ideals of democracy, social justice

More than a dozen Rhode Island authors will come together Sunday, Jan. 15 for Writers Resist: Rhode Island, a “re-inauguration” of mercy, equality, free speech and the fundamental ideals of democracy.

Writers Resist will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday in the DiStefano Lecture Hall. Hosted by Salve Regina’s writer in residence Dr. Jen McClanaghan, the event will feature a diverse group of Rhode Island authors, including Karen Boren, Adam Braver, Tina Cane, Mary Cappello, Darcie Dennigan, Theo Greenblatt, Christopher Johnson, Erica Mena, Julie Danho O’Connell, Patch Tseng Putterman, Kate Schapira, Susannah Strong and more.

A short reading will be followed by an open forum/open mic. There will also be a fundraising raffle for Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island. The event is free and open to the public.

Simultaneous Writers Resist events will happen in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Oakland, Austin, Portland, Omaha, Seattle, London, Zurich, Hong Kong, Singapore and many more cities. The Manhattan event, to be held on the steps of the New York Public Library, is co-sponsored by PEN America and features some of the best-known writers in America.

These events originated from a Facebook post by poet Erin Belieu, co-founder of VIDA: Women in Literary Arts. Belieu challenged writers to organize to reclaim democracy, which led to the Writers Resist organizer’s forum, now boasting more than 2,000 members. From this, more than 70 events featuring countless prominent literary voices rapidly emerged.

International Programs offering stipend for faculty development seminars

The Office of International Programs has announced an annual competition for a $2,000 stipend for faculty to participate in international faculty development seminars offered by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE).

The stipend is offered as a benefit of Salve Regina’s institutional membership with CIEE, a world leader in international exchange.

Since 1990, CIEE has organized hundreds of faculty seminars in more than 40 countries, helping faculty and administrators from institutions of higher education gain insight into alternate worldviews, hear diverse voices from an international community and access innovative approaches to learning and problem solving.

Interested faculty should submit a 1-2 page statement detailing how their selected program will benefit their research, teaching and/or other University work. Statements should be emailed to erin.fitzgerald@salve.edu or dropped off in the Office of International Programs by Wednesday, Feb. 1. The director of international programs, provost and dean of academics will jointly select the recipient, and notification will be sent in mid-February.

The recipient may use funds remaining in their annual professional development fund to offset additional costs, such as remaining program costs and flight. Stipend recipients can also apply directly to CIEE for fellowships.

Employees honored during annual recognition ceremony

Andy Boschetto, men’s ice hockey coach, received the staff community service award during the annual holiday luncheon and service recognition ceremony Dec. 21, 2016. In addition, President Jane Gerety, RSM, honored nearly 40 employees for their service to Salve Regina.

Salve Regina’s staff community service awards are designed to recognize staff members who demonstrate their commitment to others by volunteering in their communities. Staff members are honored each year for their volunteerism, and donations in the amount of $300 are given to the charities of their choice.

In addition, the annual door decorating contest invited faculty and staff to “deck the halls” with the Christmas spirit. The Office of Safety and Security took first place, while the Center for Student Development took second and the Business Office took third.

“Campus Conversations” radio show highlights University’s faculty

Salve Regina has partnered with local radio station WADK 1540 AM to produce “Campus Conversations,” a weekly show that highlights the work and contributions of the University’s faculty. Hosted by Dr. Scott Zeman, provost/vice president for academic affairs, the show airs at 11:06 a.m. Wednesdays.

Archived recordings are available on iTunesU, with new conversations added weekly.

Faculty featured to date include:

Heather Axen, assistant professor, Department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences: Axen talked about power and perseverance in the world of biology, specifically ants. She also shared her experience with cancer research and the immune systems of social creatures.

Nancy Gordon, associate professor and chairwoman, Department of Counseling, Leadership and Expressive Arts: Gordon discussed the evolution of the University’s graduate programs in counseling and leadership, and shared her thoughts on Salve Regina’s vision and strategic planning at mercy institutions.

Jayme Hennessy, associate professor, Department of Religious and Theological Studies: Hennessy shared how growing up on Block Island influenced her interest in the arts, religion and theology, and discussed why the Jubilee Year of Mercy was so relevant to Salve Regina and its neighboring communities.

Jon Marcoux, assistant professor, Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural and Historic Preservation Program: Marcoux discussed the history of slavery in Rhode Island and the recent “dig” at the Breakers. He also shared how students have worked with technology in the field of cultural and historic preservation.

Elaine Mangiante, assistant professor, Department of Education: Mangiante examined how the Next Generation Science Standards are being implemented in K-12 classrooms across the region. She also shared how Salve Regina students have incorporated engineering design and hydroponics at Newport’s Pell Elementary School.

Jennifer McArdle, assistant professor, Department of Administration of Justice: McArdle discussed some of the latest issues in cybersecurity and how Salve Regina is preparing students for careers in this area. She also talked about the role of cyber threats in recent elections, Wikileaks and the use of science fiction in her teaching.

Jen McClanaghan, assistant professor and writer in residence, Department of English and Communications: McClanaghan discussed her role in bringing writing projects to the community. She also explored the power of details to move people, and how the intersection between the ordinary and the extraordinary can be truly inspiring.

Tim Neary, associate professor, Department of History: Neary discussed his new book, “Crossing Parish Boundaries: Race, Sports and Catholic Youth in Chicago 1914-1954,” which challenges many of our widely accepted understandings about U.S. race relations in northern cities during the mid-20th century.

Susannah Strong, assistant professor, Department of Art and Art History: Strong, a recent winner of the Rhode Island Foundation’s Robert and Margaret MacColl Johnson Fellowship Award, discussed the transition of moving from large-scale artistic works to the small-scale phenomenon of storytelling.

John Tawa, assistant professor, Department of Psychology: Tawa shared how Salve Regina is preparing to become a more diverse and racially aware campus community. He also discussed his research, conducted with Salve Regina students, on how people think and talk about race.

Digital viewbook receives marketing award

Salve Regina’s digital viewbook, produced by the offices of Admissions and Digital Communications in partnership with TWG Plus, recently received a digital marketing award from Higher Education Marketing Report, the most widely read publication for educational marketers.

EDU Digital Marketing Awards recognize the best educational websites, digital content, electronic communications, mobile media and social media. Salve Regina was one of just 129 colleges, universities and secondary schools nationwide to receive a gold award.

“It was through our responsive and collaborative partnerships with the admissions team that we were able to produce such innovative work,” said Talmadge Boyd, TWG Plus director of interactive strategy. “Our design team achieved the goal of demonstrating the Salve Regina experience through the eyes of their students.”

Judges for the EDU Digital Marketing Awards consisted of a national panel of higher education marketers, advertising creative directors, marketing and advertising professionals and the editorial board of Higher Education Marketing Report.

Fall 2016 grades to become available Friday, Dec. 23

Grades for the fall 2016 semester will be available online beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23. In addition, the Office of the Registrar will resume transcript service for all students whose grades are complete on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017.

Salve Regina does not mail semester grade reports. Students who need grade reports may obtain them online when they access their grades through the portal. Students who do not have Internet access at or near their home may ask the Office of the Registrar to mail a semester grade report to the home address or complete the grade release authorization form.

Parents who wish a copy of the grade report should ask their student to print one for their use. Parents whose students have filed a parental release form have the option of asking the Office of the Registrar to mail a printed grade report to the home address.

The grading timetable is as follows:

  • On Friday, Dec. 23 at 5 p.m., grades will be available to students online via the portal.
  • All grades are due from faculty on Friday December 23.
  • The Office of the Registrar will be closed from Dec. 23 to Jan. 3. Grade reports will be mailed to those who request them on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017.

The Office of the Registrar will resume transcript service for students on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017. Transcripts may be denied to students with outstanding financial obligations. Students who have an urgent transcript request and are in doubt about the status of their account should call the Business Office at (401) 341-2900.
