Salve Studios, the University’s student-run film and video production club, will premiere its first film, “The Final Cut,” at 6 p.m. Friday, April 1 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

The 25-minute horror/slasher film tells the story of a college-aged woman and her friends who venture onto the Cliff Walk after dark and are stalked by the woman’s psychotic filmmaker ex-boyfriend.

The project was spearheaded by Salve Studios co-presidents Lily Margaret Jones ’17 and Ryan “Buddy” Colwell ’17. “As film minors, we learn a lot about film theory, and some of the most interesting work is done on horror films, particularly slasher films,” Jones said. “I was also personally inspired by my time here in Newport during the summer and how creepy the Cliff Walk could be in the evening. It’s beautiful, but it can also be very dangerous.”

In addition to Jones and Colwell, the crew includes Juan Roldan ’16, Kyla Russell ’18, Jack Farrell ’18, Alana Boulter ’18, Ellena Sweet ’16 and Stephanie Menders ’17. The cast includes Mariana Bracciale ’16, Nathaniel Flachs ’18, Laura Jedynasty ’17, Dean Wollenberg ’16, Colin Burke ’17 and Sofia Talbot ’17.

Admission is free and concessions will be served.

The spring 2016 edition of the Willow, Salve Regina’s literary magazine, has been published and distributed around campus. Copies are available at the entrances of Antone Academic Center, McKillop Library, Miley Hall, Ochre Court, O’Hare Academic Center and Wakehurst.

The library will host a reception for students who submitted to the magazine at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 6. Students and faculty will gather for coffee and desserts before those who were published are given the chance to read their work.

Salve Regina students can submit artwork, photography, poetry and prose to the magazine each semester at thewillowliterarymagazine.submittable.com. The Willow will accept submissions for the fall 2016 semester beginning Sept. 20.

The Office of Community Service is seeking student facilitators to plan and implement the fall 2016 Service Plunge, scheduled for Aug. 31 to Sept. 4.

Service Plunge provides new students with a challenging and fun opportunity to lead and learn through active experiences. Through direct and indirect service, “plungees” learn the importance of service, social justice and civic engagement. They also meet community needs, identify and build upon community assets and share their experiences with the campus community.

Facilitators lead the Service Plunge but also serve as a friend to the participants. They are expected to take charge of service events, lead by example and act as a role model to the group.

The commitment includes a training session scheduled for May 9-11. In addition, facilitators are expected to arrive on time for all meetings, respond promptly to emails and be advocates for the Office of Community Service.

Applications are available online and are due by noon Friday, April 8.

Twenty-eight Salve Regina students are spending their spring break expanding their understanding of the civil rights movement, climbing aboard a southbound bus to explore the key sites of the era and interact with significant participants in one of the most important social movements of our time.

Dr. Anthony Lopresti, associate professor of religious and theological studies, and Dr. Sami Nassim, director of multicultural programs, are leading students on the tour with scheduled stops in Greensboro, N.C. (International Civil Rights Center & Museum); Atlanta, Ga. (The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change); Montgomery, Ala. (Holt Street Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, Civil Rights Memorial, Freedom Rides Museum, Rosa Parks Museum); Birmingham, Ala. (Birmingham Civil Rights Institute); and Washington, D.C. (Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, Lincoln Memorial).

The trip will pay special attention to the power of protest and the ways in which courage and a deep commitment to social justice mark the participants in this movement, both black and white.

“There are many sites in the United States that are very important when you recall the history of the civil rights movement and I thought it would be a great trip where we could build camaraderie in the process of serving educational goals – learning the history, seeing first-hand the places and understanding the experiences people went through to struggle for freedom, for things that most of us take for granted,” LoPresti said.

Some of the students participating will receive academic credit as part of RTS335: Social Ethics and HIS399: Special Topics courses.
