The Salve Regina community will gather during Commencement weekend to celebrate the dedication of Walgreen Hall, honoring a $1 million gift from Kathleen B. and Charles R. Walgreen on the occasion of Brooke Julia Walgreen’s graduation.

The ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18 at the residence hall that serves as the signature entrance to campus on the corner of Narragansett and Ochre Point avenues.

Brooke Walgreen on Sunday will be awarded a B.A. in psychology and in the fall will begin her master’s degree program in applied behavior analysis at Salve Regina. “Walgreen Hall has become a symbol of what our mission statement instills in all of us,” she said. “My experience at Salve Regina University has taught me how to reach my full potential and become the person I am today. This gift is a testament of my family’s ongoing support of me and my value for education at a school I will forever love.”

Saturday’s ceremony will include remarks from Chancellor M. Therese Antone, RSM; Dr. Janet L. Robinson, chairman of the board of trustees; President Jane Gerety, RSM; and the Walgreen family.

“We thank and welcome the Walgreen family as partners in advancing the mission of Salve Regina University,” Sister Therese said. “In the thoughtful naming of Walgreen Hall on the occasion of Brooke Walgreen’s graduation, the generous gift from the Walgreen family recognizes and supports the enduring vision of the founding Sisters of Mercy; a precious legacy which will serve young men and women well into the future.”

Designed by local architect John Grosvenor and built by Farrar & Associates of Newport, Walgreen Hall opened in September 2003 as “New Residence” to accommodate first-year students in suite-style living arrangements. Housing up to 11 students, each suite in Walgreen Hall shares a lounge/study area and bathroom.

The building also contains a wing dedicated to administrative office space for Campus Life, Career Development and Multicultural Affairs.
