International Programs offering study abroad scholarships

Students who are planning to study abroad during the spring 2016 semester are invited to apply for scholarships awarded by the Office of International Programs.

Full-time students who are planning to study abroad for the first time through a program recognized by Salve Regina are eligible to apply. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.

While most applicants are eligible for a Study Abroad Endowment Scholarship, some may also be eligible for the Jane Campbell Scholarship in Modern Languages (open to declared language majors or minors) and/or the Donaldson Trust Scholarship (open to students who study in Spanish-speaking countries).

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, financial need and the applicant’s demonstrated maturity as a responsible member of the Salve Regina community.

Application materials must be returned to the Office of International Programs by Saturday, Oct. 10. Scholarship recipients will be announced during the “Adventures in Another Land” presentation on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

“Library Lessons” workshops set for fall semester

The McKillop Library will once again sponsor “Library Lessons,” a series of workshops open to all members of the Salve Regina community, throughout the fall 2015 semester. Topics include conducting research, learning APA and MLA citation styles and using bibliographic citation managers.

Those who are interested in attending may register for the “Library Lessons” series online at library.salve.edu/librarylessons.

“Introduction to Today’s Library Services”

This workshop will provide the basics on how to use RefWorks, an online research management tool, to manage and store variously gathered information and to generate citations and bibliographies.

“Conducting a Literature Review”

A literature review is an account of what has been published on a topic by accredited scholars and researchers. This workshop will provide participants with the tools to find and analyze the relevant resources in a literature review.

Five Seahawks earn conference honors

Congratulations to the following student athletes, who recently received honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference:

Women’s cross country: Alex Demeo ’19

Running in the No. 3 spot for the Seahawks, Demeo was named rookie of the week after finishing with a personal best time of 20:05.09 at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational, earning 75th place out of 315 runners.

Men’s cross country: Sean Hughes ’16

Hughes was named runner of the week after helping the Seahawks earn 24th place out of 43 teams in the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational. The top Commonwealth Coast Conference finisher, he finished the five-mile run with a time of 27:03.32 to place 74th out of 324 runners.

Women’s cross country: Amy Irving ’17

Irving was named runner of the week after earning 14th place in a 315-person field at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational. She traversed the 5K trail in 18:43, leading all Seahawk runners. Salve Regina earned a ninth-place finish out of 42 teams in the invitational.

Men’s cross country: Tyler Lancaster ’19

Lancaster was named rookie of the week after finishing the five-mile University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational in a personal best time of 28:55.90. His performance helped the Seahawks earn 24th place out of 43 teams.

Women’s soccer: Abby McMackin ’19

McMackin was named rookie of the week after collecting her sixth goal of the season (tied for the CCC lead) in the Seahawks’ 3-2 win at Gordon College. Her unassisted marker in the 52nd minute kicked off a three-goal rally that solidified Salve Regina’s first conference victory of the year and evened the Seahawks’ overall record at 3-3.

University events coincide with pope’s historic visit to U.S.

Salve Regina has planned two events this week to coincide with Pope Francis’ historic visit to the United States. In addition, President Jane Gerety, RSM will travel to Washington, D.C. and several students will travel to Philadelphia to participate in events related to the papal visit.

Pell Center discussion on second encyclical

The Pell Center will bring together faculty from various academic departments to host a panel discussion focusing on the impact of Laudato si’, the pope’s second encyclical. “‘Laudato si’ – Pope Francis and the Challenge of the Environment” will be presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP online or by calling (401) 341-2927.

Released in June 2015, “‘Laudato si’: On care for our common home” laments the environmental degradation of our planet and issues a call to global political action that could curb the excesses of rampant consumerism and unchecked technological development in exchange for more sustainable forms of development.

Speakers will include Dr. Craig Condella from the Department of Philosophy, Dr. Debra Curtis from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Dr. Jayme Hennessy from the Department of Religious and Theological Studies, Dr. Susan Meschwitz from the Department of Chemistry and Dr. Chad Raymond from the Department of Political Science. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Jim Ludes, executive director of the Pell Center.

The faculty experts will explore many topics, including where the encyclical falls in the context of environmental philosophy; how anthropologists might contribute to the kind of work Pope Francis is calling people to do; a theological examination of the encyclical put into a broader context of human ecology; an exploration of how the text draws heavily on science rather than scripture; and a look at some of the skeptical questions society might raise about the power of the Pope to affect any of the changes he’s calling for.

Viewing of pope’s address to U.S. Congress

The Salve Regina community is invited to view a live broadcast of Pope Francis’ historic address to the U.S. Congress at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24 in the DiStefano Lecture Hall. Dr. Jim Ludes, executive director of the Pell Center, will lead an audience discussion following the pope’s remarks. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP online or by calling (401) 341-2927.

Sister Jane travels to Washington, D.C.

President Jane Gerety, RSM will be present in the Capitol as a guest of Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse when Pope Francis addresses a joint session of Congress on Thursday, Sept. 24. This historic event will mark the first time a reigning pontiff has addressed Congress. A ticketed Jumbotron broadcast will be set up on the west front of the Capitol, and the pope is expected to make a brief appearance there following his address.

Students travel to Philadelphia

Salve Regina students will travel to Philadelphia this weekend, where they will join with students from other mercy institutions for discussions and attend Sunday’s closing Mass for the World Meeting of Families 2015. Accompanying the students on the trip, sponsored by the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life, will be Anna Mae Mayer, director of the Mercy Center, and Dr. Jayme Hennessy, associate professor of religious and theological studies.

Students attending are Colleen Cloonan ’16, Lauren Cronshaw ’17, Emily Cuellar ’18, Sara Johnson ’17, Caroline Kelley ’18, Kristin McDermott ’16, Julia Morisi ’17 and Racquel Pouliot ’18. On Saturday, they will travel to Gwynedd University to meet with students from other Mercy institutions and participate in discussions on the critical concerns of the Sisters of Mercy: immigration, racism, women, non-violence, earth and environment.

The group will also meet with members of the Mercy Volunteer Corps and learn about Project Home, a center that addresses hunger and homelessness in Philadelphia.

“This will be a great chance to not only participate in the papal Mass on Sunday as a mercy school contingent, but to network with other mercy schools and organizations,” Mayer said. “Our students are very excited to go and the Mercy Center is happy to be able to sponsor the trip.”

Social Enterprise Greenhouse seeking student entrepreneurs

Student entrepreneurs who are seeking to take their “do good, do well” businesses to the next level are invited to an upcoming information session on the Social Enterprise Greenhouse’s Accelerator program.

The information session will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 in the Antone Academic Center, Room 221.

Accelerator is a 12-week, blended-learning program that offers mid-stage social entrepreneurs the knowledge, networks and resources they need to take their venture to the next level. In 2016, Social Enterprise Greenhouse will offer two Accelerator cohorts, one specific to food ventures and another supporting social ventures regardless of industry focus.

The experience includes weekly one-on-one coaching, access to a network of social impact supporters and investors, pro bono resources, priority access to the Social Enterprise Greenhouse loan fund, free office space and more.

Pascale named offensive player of the week

The New England Football Conference has named running back Sam Pascale ’17 its offensive player of the week.

Pascale rushed for 211 yards on 25 carries in Salve Regina’s 32-14 victory over Castleton University last Saturday. He found the end zone in the second quarter when he took a toss and ran 66 yards down the sideline, snaking his way past Spartans defenders for a score that gave Salve Regina its first lead of the afternoon.

Salve Regina, now 2-0 on the season, will begin its conference schedule with a matchup against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 in New London, Conn.

University community invited to celebrate mercy heritage

Students, faculty and staff are invited to celebrate the mercy heritage at Salve Regina during the annual Mercy Week. The week will feature a celebration in the Miley cafeteria and a mercy heritage night.

The Mercy Day celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 in the Miley cafeteria. A special menu, indicative of the Irish roots of Catherine McAuley, will be served. Faculty and staff will receive a complimentary lunch, courtesy of the University.

Throughout lunchtime, students can enter raffle drawings for gift certificates to local restaurants. They can also speak with representatives from the Sisters of Mercy, the Mercy Associates, Mercy Volunteer Corps, Sigma Phi Sigma (the national mercy honor society) and Mercy in Motion.

In addition, the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life will host its mercy heritage night, “Alumni in Motion: Celebrating Mercy Then and Now,” at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 in the Mercy Center. Young alumni from Mercy in Motion will discuss how they are experiencing and bringing mercy into their professional lives.

Mercy Day commemorates the founding of the Sisters of Mercy by Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Ireland in 1831. Salve Regina also celebrates the founding of Salve Regina College in 1947, when Ochre Court was gifted to the Sisters of Mercy of Rhode Island and the institution welcomed its first class of 58 students.

Community service opportunities: September

Sept. 19: Clean Ocean Access Beach Cleanup

Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 19 to clean up Easton’s (First) Beach. As this location is within walking distance, transportation is not provided.

Sept. 20: Clean Ocean Access Sharkfest Swim

Volunteers are needed from 7-10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20 to check swimmers in and out at the start and finish line. Volunteers are also needed from 8-10 a.m. to help with water safety using a kayak or stand-up paddleboard. As this location is within walking distance, transportation is not provided.

Sept. 22-23: Bloodmobile

Volunteers are needed to help with the Rhode Island Blood Center’s blood drive on Tuesday, Sept. 22 and Wednesday, Sept. 23. The bloodmobile will be parked in front of the Rodgers Recreation Center, with registration in the Rodgers lobby. Volunteers are needed for 2-3 hour shifts on both days. Time slots are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1-3 p.m. and 3-6 p.m. Transportation is not available for this on-campus event.

Sept. 23: Potter League for Animals

Volunteers are needed in Wakehurst, Room 200 from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 to cut up T-shirts and braid them into toys for animals at the Potter League. Gail Lawson, volunteer coordinator, will be on hand to provide information about the organization. Transportation is not available for this on-campus event.

Sept. 24: Salvation Army Flower Project

Volunteers are needed in Wakehurst, Room 201 from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24 to arrange flower vases for the Salvation Army’s annual dinner. Transportation is not available for this on-campus event.

Sept. 26: City of Newport’s Fall Recycling Day

Volunteers are needed from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 26 at Easton’s (First) Beach to greet residents and direct traffic during this event in which vendors help city residents dispose of hard to recycle objects. This location is within walking distance and transportation is not provided. The beach is located at 175 Memorial Blvd. in Newport.

Sept. 27: Cluny Country Fair

Volunteers are needed from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27 to run small games and activities. Transportation is TBD.

Sept. 27: Walk to End Alzheimer’s

Volunteers are needed from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27 to help with the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on campus. All volunteers should meet at the registration table at the Young Building. Transportation is not available for this on-campus event.

Willow seeking submissions, sponsoring competition

The Willow, Salve Regina’s literary magazine, is seeking student submissions of artwork, photos, poetry and prose. Submissions will be accepted through Tuesday, Oct. 20 at thewillowliterarymagazine.submittable.com.

The organization is also holding a campus-wide competition in which students could win any of the following prizes:

  • $50 Brick Alley Pub gift card
  • $30 Empire Tea & Coffee gift card
  • $20 Salve bookstore gift card

Students who wish to participate in the competition should capture their favorite part of fall using artwork, photos, poetry or prose along with the hashtag #willowcapturesautumn on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

To browse the latest magazine, pick up a copy of the Willow’s spring 2015 edition, located around campus at the entrances of Ochre Court, Wakehurst, McKillop Library, O’Hare Academic Center, Antone Academic Center and Miley Hall.

Tickets available for pope’s visit to Washington, D.C.

Pope Francis will address a joint session of Congress in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Sept. 24. A ticketed Jumbotron broadcast will be set up on the west front of the Capitol, and the pope is expected to make a brief appearance there at approximately 11 a.m., following his address.

Salve Regina will receive 50 tickets for access to this outdoor event. The west front will be arranged in a similar fashion to presidential inaugurations. Access to the area will begin at approximately 5 a.m. Sept. 24.

The tickets were made available to members of the Salve Regina community by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse. They will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis via an online registration system. Those who wish to reserve tickets should register by noon Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Members of the University community may reserve two tickets. Travel to Washington, D.C. and accommodations are the responsibility of the ticket holders.

Tickets should be available for distribution later this week or early next. Ticket holders will be contacted via email when tickets become available for pickup.
