Summer is beginning to wind down and the start of the fall 2015 semester is just around the corner. The Summer News Update is packed with key information to keep in mind as you prepare to head back to campus.


Residence Hall Check-In

• New students: Check-in to the residence halls for new students will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6.
• Returning students: Check-in for upperclassmen will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7. Returning students should report directly to their assigned residence hall or apartment. Residence Life staff will not be available to assist with check-in until the scheduled time.
• Transfer and international students: Incoming transfer students have the option to move in Sept. 3 or 4 to attend Orientation on Sept. 4. International students arrive Aug. 30 for international student orientation.
• Early arrivals: Early arrivals to campus are permitted only for students with exceptional travel distance (outside of the Northeast) or students who are required to arrive early for a University-sanctioned event, sport or activity. To learn more, see the early arrival policy.

As a reminder, housing assignments were sent to new students during the last week of July. Check your Salve Regina email for details and instructions to finding your room placement.

Move-In Day Parking

Due to move-in day on Sunday, Sept. 6, the parking lots for Hunt, Miley, Moore and Reefe halls will be closed beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. Any vehicles remaining will be subject to ticketing and/or towing. It is essential that these parking lots are empty for loading purposes during the move-in process.

Standard hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Hours for the first two weeks of the fall semester and non-academic periods will be posted to www.salve.bkstr.com.

The bookstore provides a wide variety of course materials for purchase or rent (including new, used and digital titles), along with Salve Regina apparel, school and dorm supplies and more. Textbooks for the fall 2015 semester are now available in-store and online and can be shipped or held for pickup. The textbook rental program offers deep upfront savings and allows students to highlight and make notes in their rented books. Students who change their mind can convert their rental to purchase by simply paying the difference before the due date. Digital titles are available through BryteWave, which provides access via a laptop or mobile device.

Building Repairs

To request repairs or report problems using SchoolDude, choose “Request Building Repairs” from the Quick Links menu in My Salve. SchoolDude will ask for your Salve Regina email address, and first-time users also need to enter their name and phone number. From there, complete the form and enter the password, which is always “salve.” After the form is submitted, the system will send email updates as the request is accepted and completed.

Students can still reach the facilities department via phone, however the office will be unable to confirm receipt of their call. For after-hours emergency repairs, call the Office of Safety and Security at (401) 341-2325 or (401) 341-5500.

Please note: Cox Communications supplies all of Salve Regina’s residence halls, apartments and houses with cable TV and high-speed Internet. Students who experience issues with these services should call the Cox support line at (866) 402-0901.

The Center for Student Development facilitates student success and trans­formation through the Class Dean program, a four-year comprehensive experience program, peer mentoring and transfer transitional support.

Class Deans are faculty members who move with a class throughout its four years at Salve Regina. Class Deans facilitate academic, personal and holistic development by encouraging students to participate in academic services, experience program offerings, faculty-student activities, and various opportunities around campus.

Experience programs are designed to promote community building, student learning and skill development in order to help students successfully navigate their Salve Regina experience. The themes associated with each class experience are:

• First year (FYE): Becoming a Part of the Community
• Sophomore year (SYE): Developing Your Purpose
• Junior year (JYE): Making a Commitment
• Senior year (SrYE): Transitioning into the Larger and Global Community

New students are assigned to a First Year Transitions (FYT) course designed to support their transition to Salve Regina and college life. Students participate in a variety of activities, assignments and discussions to help them locate and use campus resources, set goals, manage time and identify personal health and well-being strategies. The course provides a safe place where students gain important information and skills that are essential to their success in college.

The center also offers personal, academic, holistic and transitional support to transfer students. Through targeted programming and individual meetings, the director for student transitions provides support, guidance and resources to help transfer students become acclimated to a new campus community. New transfer students enroll in Transfer Transitions, a one-credit course designed to help them make a successful transition to Salve Regina.

Explorientation and First Year Experience: Explorientation helps new students meet people, learn about Salve Regina and its campus and prepare for a successful year in college. During Explorientation, students meet their First Year Experience peer mentor, who co-facilitates the FYT course with an instructor. Peer mentors are current students who have volunteered to support new students as they transition into our social and scholarly community. Together with their FYT group, students participate in volunteer work during Explorientation’s annual Day of Service. Explorientation ends with Convocation, a Salve Regina tradition that welcomes new students to the University. Students see their future professors in their regalia and hear from their Class Dean, Student Government Association president and other members of the campus and local community. During Explorientation, students can also check out the ThinkFast game show, attend an outdoor movie, stop by the McKillop Library open house, and explore the campus and surrounding community.

Junior Jumpstart: Co-sponsored by the Center for Student Development and the Office of Career Development, Junior Jumpstart provides students with the specific skills and knowledge necessary to be better prepared for their future education and career plans. Through a series of guest speakers and interactive breakout sessions, students explore topics relevant to branding themselves, building professional relationships, leveraging experience and preparing for graduate school. Junior Jumpstart will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. The complete schedule and registration details will be available early in the fall semester. Students who have mental health emergencies during evenings or weekends should seek assistance through their Resident Advisor or call the Office of Safety and Security at (401) 341-2325. Students who are having difficulty adjusting to Salve Regina are particularly encouraged to seek out counseling services.

ID card system: Since April, a broad-based team has been working to implement a new Salve ID card system. The project is targeted for completion before students return for the fall 2015 semester. The new Salve ID card system will feature contactless technology for door access, a more efficient database system and a centralized One Card Office, which will be located in the McKillop Library, Room 002 as part of User Support Services. More information will be communicated to the University community as it becomes available.

Help Desk: The Help Desk has moved from Munroe Center to McKillop Library, Room 008 (garden level). All existing contact information will remain the same. This move will help to build a centralized services and support center in the garden level of the library, which currently houses User Support Services (including the new campus card office), the Center for Teaching and Learning, Mail Services and the Copy Center.

Students can find millions of articles and the library’s collection of 250,000 e-books 24 hours a day through the website, webchat with a librarian Sunday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., or visit the librarians for personal research consultations or classes on advanced research. Also, be sure to submit recommendations for book and DVD purchases.

Summer has been a time of change for the library:

• The Curriculum Resource Center on the second floor has a new layout, which will make its resources easier to find and more comfortable for studying.
• The HELIN lending consortium has undergone some changes. Brown University, Bryant University and the University of Rhode Island have their own catalogs, so borrowing from these libraries may take an extra step. Staff members will gladly help students get acquainted with the new procedure.
• In partnership with the First Year Experience, new students will be introduced to library services through McKillop Maneuver, which uses a series of clues from the social media app Vine to navigate the library.

Parking and Transportation

Parking regulations: Freshman residents are not permitted to have any motorized vehicles on campus or within the city of Newport during the academic year. Upperclassmen are assigned parking in the vicinity of their residence halls. Resident students who park on a city street or in other campus parking lots are subject to ticketing for violating this policy. Commuter students are not permitted to use resident lots. Parking permits: All motorized vehicles (including scooters) parked on Salve Regina property must have a valid permit. All resident and commuter decals have expired. Students must register their vehicle online through My Salve. The registration form is located in the User Account section of My Information. Commuter students are reminded to enter a local address when prompted.

The cost is $125 per year for automobiles and $75 per year for scooters, which will be automatically billed to the student account.

Students may pick up their parking permits in the Office of Safety and Security from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 through Friday, Sept. 11. A valid registration and proof of insurance is needed to pick up parking permits. All students must have a valid parking permit by Monday, Sept. 14. Failure to have a valid permit may result in ticketing and towing.

RIPTA trolley: Free transportation is provided for students with a valid Salve Regina ID. Two RIPTA trolleys run simultaneously through campus. Monday through Friday, the outbound trolley leaves the Gateway Center for campus at 7:40 a.m., while the inbound trolley leaves from the corner of Ruggles and Bellevue avenues at 7:38 a.m. and then goes through campus. On Saturdays, the outbound trolley begins its route at 8:40 a.m., while the inbound trolley begins at 8:54 a.m. On Sundays, both trolleys begin their routes at 9:40 a.m.

Students with valid IDs may also use any statewide RIPTA service. Trolley and bus schedules are available in the Office of Safety and Security, the Office of Residence Life, Miley Hall, Wakehurst and the O’Hare Academic Center.

Salve Regina shuttle: Beginning this fall, Salve Regina will provide regularly scheduled shuttle service to and from designated stops on and off campus via the new campus shuttle system. The shuttle will operate from 7 p.m. to midnight Sunday through Wednesday and from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. Shuttle stops are conveniently located near residence halls, academic buildings and other University facilities as well as four off-campus locations in downtown Newport. Student IDs will be required to board all buses and a maximum of two guests per student will be allowed. Guests must be accompanied by a Salve Regina student at any given time.

Students can track the shuttles and find shuttle stops through the new “SafeStop” app, which is available to all students and University personnel free of charge and features predictive arrival times for each shuttle stop location. Salve Regina is the first university in the Northeast to begin using SafeStop. The app provides a real-time map feature that displays the shuttle location, estimated arrival times for each stop, and an alerts and messaging center to relay important service information from the University or transportation provider.

Bicycles on campus: Students who bring bicycles to campus are encouraged to register them, free of charge, with the Office of Safety and Security. Bicycles with motors are considered a motorized vehicle and will be subject to the same online registration process as other vehicles. There are approximately 15 bicycle racks located throughout campus, and bicycle storage rooms are located at Hunt, Reefe and Walgreen Halls. Bicycle locks are recommended. In addition, all RIPTA buses, with the exception of the local trolleys, are fitted with racks that hold two bicycles.

Student Health Education

During the fall semester, all new students will participate in MyStudentBody, a three-part, computer-based prevention education course that addresses issues related to alcohol, drugs and sexual violence. Structured around a motivational self-assessment in each area, the program incorporates audio, video and interactive tools and lessons to teach students key concepts and skills. Students will be informed through their First Year Transitions class as to when they should begin the online program.
