Tenor Eric Bronner to be featured in recital

Eric Bronner, adjunct instructor of voice at Salve Regina, will perform “Night Life Around the World” at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28 in the Ochre Court state dining room.

Bronner, a tenor, will join with baritone Vaughn Bryner and University staff pianist David D’Amico in performing selections from the German cabaret, French music hall, American jazz, classical concert stage and musical theater. Composers will include George Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael, Kurt Weill, Maurice Ravel, Mitch Leigh and more.

University adds Provencal Bakery to Salve Card

Salve Regina has announced a new partnership with Provencal Bakery and Cafe. Students can now make purchases at Provencal’s new Newport location using the points tender on the Salve Card.

Provencal Bakery has been baking artisan breads for restaurants, markets and retail since 1998. As other lines of baked goods have been added, owner Brenda Sabbag has pursued visible retail locations. Provencal’s newest location, 469 Thames St. in Newport, features their chicken salads, pasta salads and bakery items.

Roundtable luncheon focusing on health care debate

The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will sponsor a roundtable discussion focusing on the health care debate at 11:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26 in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

Is there a right to health care? If so, what is the basis for this right, and how much is the government obligated to provide? Dr. Troy Catterson, assistant professor of philosophy, will explore the ethical dimensions of this debate with participants.

Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff, and lunch is provided. As space is extremely limited, those interested in attending should RSVP to pellcenter@salve.edu.

Gallery featuring recent work of Department of Art faculty

The Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery has announced the opening of the Faculty Triennial Exhibition, which highlights some of the most dynamic work currently being made by the artists and art historians of Salve Regina’s Department of Art.

The exhibition runs from Sept. 25 to Nov. 5. On Thursday, Sept. 25,the campus community and the general public are invited to attend an opening reception with the faculty, which will run from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery.

The exhibition will feature the work of nine faculty in the areas of photography, painting, ceramics, graphic design, sculpture, art history and mixed media. The installation combines the recent work of Bert Emerson, Karyn Jimenez-Elliot, Ernest Jolicoeur, Jay Lacouture, Anthony Mangieri, Gerry Perrino, Barbara Shamblin, Susannah Strong and James Yarnall.

The faculty of the Department of Art are dedicating this exhibition to Shamblin, who has served the University for 27 years and will retire after the 2014-2015 academic year.

The Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery is located in the Antone Academic Center and is handicap accessible with parking along Lawrence and Leroy avenues. Its exhibits are open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

McClanaghan to read from her book of poems

Dr. Jen McClanaghan, assistant professor of English and writer in residence, will host a public reading from her new book “River Legs,” a collection of poems that is garnering rave reviews and is currently a finalist for the National Poetry Series and the Dorset Prize.

The reading will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept 25 at Island Books, located in Wyatt Square at 575 East Main Road in Middletown. A wine and cheese reception will follow. The evening is sponsored by the Department of English.

McClanaghan’s writing, including the poem “Born Again” that was published in the Sept. 15 issue of The New Yorker, has appeared in Best American Poetry 2013, The Iowa Review, The Southern Review and New England Review.

“‘Born Again’ is inspired by a New York Times story that my creative writing students and I discussed at length last fall, so they were definitely a part of the experience of writing it,” McClanaghan said.

McClanaghan holds a B.A. in creative writing from Antioch College, an M.F.A. in creative writing with a concentration in poetry from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in English with a concentration in poetry from Florida State University. She has been a finalist in the Third Coast Poetry Contest, was a Best New Poets nominee from FIELD, and is a past winner of the Georgetown Review Poetry Prize.

Four Seahawks earn conference honors

Congratulations to the following student athletes, who recently received honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference and the New England Football Conference:

Men’s cross country: Sean Hughes ’16

Hughes was named runner of the week as the top conference finisher in the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational, running the 5-mile race with a time of 26:49 to place 65th out of 222 runners.

Women’s cross country: Amy Irving ’17

Irving was named runner of the week after capturing 14th place in the 272-runner Corsair Invitational. She clocked a career-best 5K time of 18:37 that lifted the Seahawks to a sixth-place finish out of 38 teams.

Women’s volleyball: Dianna Tauro ’15

Tauro was named libero of the week after averaging 4.71 digs per set and posting two double-digit kill performances in a 1-1 week for the Seahawks. She also surpassed the 1,000 digs milestone in the third set against the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Football: Steven Wilken ’15

Wilken was named offensive player of the week after setting school records for completions (27) and passing yards (389) in the loss to William Paterson University. He completed 60 percent of his passes for three touchdowns and also rushed six times for two scores. Through three games for the Seahawks, Wilken has passed for 738 yards and rushed for 64 yards and three touchdowns.

Faculty, staff invited to diversity workshops

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in two half-day diversity workshops sponsored by the Rhode Island Higher Education Training Consortium.

“Diversity and Inclusion Fundamentals” will be held Thursday, Oct. 2 at Providence College. The first session, “But I’m Not Prejudiced,” runs from 9 a.m. to noon, while the second session, “Moving from Political Correctness to Purposeful Communication,” runs from 1-4 p.m.

During these highly interactive workshops, participants will explore their backgrounds, beliefs and experiences around diversity, hear others’ perspectives and discuss strategies for creating and sustaining an inclusive, equitable and productive workplace and campus community.

Extensions to dance “In the Garden”

Extensions Dance Company will present “In the Garden,” a site-specific piece choreographed by Amanda Morton ’15, in the Wakehurst rose garden this week. The first of its kind for Salve Regina’s dance program, the piece takes movement outside onto the grounds of the campus the students call home.

Morton began the project last spring during Choreography, a course required for the minor in dance. She was enthusiastic at the prospect of using a location on campus to heighten the atmosphere of a dance, and chose the rose garden between Wakehurst and McKillop Library.

During her creative process, Morton drew inspiration from the garden itself. She envisioned a group of dancers moving throughout the space in a majestic manner, personifying statues of a garden.

With the help and encouragement of artistic director Lindsay Guarino and the 14 dancers in Extensions, Morton has created a picturesque work that will be performed at 4 and 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 and Friday, Sept. 26. Banned Books Week celebrates freedom to read

The McKillop Library is celebrating Banned Books Week with a series of activities, including a panel discussion scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 24. Students who participate in the week’s ongoing activities will have the chance to win a gift card and a banned book.

Wednesday’s panel discussion, “From Mayan Codexes to Mahfouz’s ‘Children of the Alley’: Books Banned Across the Ages,” will be held at 3 p.m. in the library. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Sally Gomaa, associate professor of English and communications, and Dr. Jon Marcoux, assistant professor of cultural and historic preservation. Light refreshments will be served.

Other activities taking place in the library include:

  • Take a photo with your favorite banned book at the “I read banned books” photo booth and upload it to the library’s Facebook page or Twitter feed for a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card. Make “I read banned books” buttons and proudly wear your freedom to read.
  • Answer Facebook/Twitter trivia for the chance to win a banned book.
  • Rescue a banned book by putting it safely back in its home on the library’s shelves, learn more about what the library can do for you, and enter to win a $50 Amazon gift card.

Banned Books Week highlights the value of free and open access to information by bringing together librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers and readers of all types to support the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
