Sports award ceremony honors University’s student-athletes

Hundreds of athletes from Salve Regina’s 20 varsity teams celebrated their team and individual accomplishments during the annual Seahawk Sports Award ceremony May 4.

The first-ever McAuley Cup went to the team that has “excelled above others in all areas including community, classroom and in athletics” – men’s ice hockey, which became the first Seahawk team to reach a championship final in the NCAA postseason.

Individual award winners included:

Site-specific art installations appearing throughout campus

Site-specific art installations designed by studio art majors as part of their Advanced Studio Concepts course have appeared throughout campus. “The students are always excited to have the opportunity to respond to the inspiring natural and architectural environment here at Salve,” said course instructor Susannah Strong.

The goal of the project is to create a piece on campus that transforms the public’s experience of the chosen site. Some works have a political or environmental message, while others are created purely for aesthetic appreciation.

“The students engage in extensive exploration of materials, as well as concept development through interdisciplinary research with professors outside the art department,” Strong said. “It is a great opportunity to share the art majors’ hard work with the larger Salve community.”

Colbert Cairns to be featured in Judah Touro Lecture Series

Dr. Emily Colbert Cairns, assistant professor in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, will speak at the Touro Synagogue this weekend in the inaugural program of the Judah Touro Lecture Series.

“Esther Queen of the Conversas” will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 16 at the synagogue, located at 72 Touro St. in Newport. Admission is $8 per person and each ticket may be used at a later date for a tour of the synagogue and adjacent visitors center.

Colbert Cairns’ research focuses on conversos and crypto-Jews in the early modern period in the Spanish-speaking world. In the lecture, she will explore the compelling story of Queen Esther as a heroine for Jewish people during the era of the Spanish Inquisition.

Juried Senior Show features 14 artists from the Class of 2018

The Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery has announced the opening of the 2018 Juried Senior Show, which showcases the creative achievements of this year’s graduates from the Department of Art and Art History.

The show features the work of 14 artists working in graphic design, painting, drawing, illustration, film and photography. They are Alessio Ayuninjam, Amber Blanchette, Brooks Cobb, Ming Fen Congdon, Mary Katherine Hickey, Elliott Hoekstra, Kaela Kennedy, Amber King, Taylor Lovrien, Taylor Marshall, Alyssa Portofee, Christina Romano, Helen Shiepe and Isabella Tomlinson.

The Juried Senior Show will be on display May 4-20, with a public reception scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 18. The exhibition closes on graduation day, shortly after a post-Commencement collation for the students and their families in the gallery.

The gallery is handicap accessible with parking along Lawrence and Leroy avenues. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The gallery is closed on Mondays.

Learning Unlimited program hosting poetry and art showcase

Learning Unlimited, a class offered by the Department of Education that partners Salve Regina students with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities, will celebrate its culminating event this week. “Awakening Compassion: The Ripple Effect,” a poetry and art showcase, will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 3 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

Throughout their yearlong journey, Learning Unlimited participants used art, poetry, music and creative movement to explore themes of compassion, hope, love, justice, inclusion, equality and respect. The notion is that a compassionate world is possible when everyone treats others as they wish to be treated – with dignity, respect and equity.

Copies of “Awakening Compassion: A Poetry Collection,” the poetry and art publication that accompanies the program, will be available for sale during the showcase.

Each year, Learning Unlimited creates opportunities for undergraduate students and people with developmental disabilities to learn from each other through education, recreation and socialization. Through multiple weekly workshop options, participants engage in a process of self-discovery and heightened self-awareness, and explore career paths that inspire them.

Education majors inducted as charter members of Kappa Delta Pi

Sixty-nine education majors became charter members of Salve Regina’s new chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi international honor society in education when they were inducted during a ceremony on Saturday, April 21 in Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

Keynote speaker Susan Trostle Brand, Kappa Delta Pi’s chapter counselor from the University of Rhode Island, officially installed Salve Regina’s new Upsilon Upsilon chapter and presented its charter. Elaine Silva Mangiante, assistant professor of education and Salve’s chapter counselor, installed its inaugural officers: Lindsay Conrad, president; Elise Capozzi, vice president; Emma Knowlton, secretary; and Benjamin Conover, treasurer.

Leary named rookie of the year for men’s lacrosse

Pat Leary ’21 was recently named Commonwealth Coast Conference rookie of the year for men’s lacrosse.

Leary compiled a league-leading 51 goals and ranked first in man-down goals (4), setting a new program record, and second in the conference in total points with 73. “Pat has been a tremendous boost to our team,” said head coach Pat Cooney. “Not only scoring goals, but distributing the ball and, as the year went on, registering more assists as the slides came.”

Joining Leary on the all-conference squad are Andrew Fera ’18 (second team attack), Brendan Kelly ’21 (third team midfielder), Mike Mongelli ’19 (third team midfielder) and Ethan Robson ’20 (third team midfielder).

“Overall, we are thrilled that Pat, Andrew, Brendan, Ethan and Mike have been recognized as all-CCC honorees,” Cooney said. “Our entire team takes great pride in the recognition of these five men.”

Salve Regina (11-6, 4-4 CCC) will travel to face Western New England University in the semifinal round of the conference playoffs at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 1.

Community service opportunities: May

Hoping to complete some service hours before the end of this academic year? The Office of Community Service has several opportunities available during the month of May. To register for one of the service opportunities listed below, or to view all service opportunities, visit the Community Service website. 

Saturday, May 5: Preservation Society of Newport County
Volunteers are needed at the Green Animals Topiary Garden from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. to help local Girl Scouts perform a variety of horticultural and nature-inspired tasks. Example activities include leaf rubbing, songs, creating a dream garden station, plant walks, photo assignments, tree sketching and more. Transportation is not provided.

Saturday, May 5: Mission Drive
Volunteers are needed from 9-11 a.m. to help with the mission drive on Calvert Street in Newport. This service site is located on the trolley line.

Sunday, May 6: Norman Bird Sanctuary
Volunteers are needed from 7:30-11:30 a.m. to help with Norman Bird Sanctuary’s annual Birds & Breakfast event. Van transportation is provided.

Monday, May 7 through Friday, May 11: End of Year Drive
Volunteers are needed in Wakehurst to collect and sort donations for the end of year drive. Volunteers may sign up in shifts: 10 a.m. to noon and/or 1-3 p.m. On Friday, May 11, math-savvy volunteers are also needed to check out customers at the presale event. Transportation is not provided.

Saturday, May 12: End of Year Drive
Volunteers are needed in Wakehurst to help with the end of year drive. Shifts are 6-8 a.m. (setup), 8-10 a.m. (checkout), 10 a.m. to noon (checkout) and noon to 2 p.m. Transportation is not provided.

Tuesday, May 15: Senior Day of Service at God’s Community Garden
Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help at the gardens. Volunteers may sign up in shifts from 10 a.m. to noon and/or noon to 2 p.m. Transportation is not provided.

Kline named senior scholar athlete for women’s lacrosse

Katie Kline ’18 recently earned the Commonwealth Coast Conference’s senior scholar-athlete award and was named to the all-conference first team for women’s lacrosse.

Kline has been a solid contributor in the midfield both offensively and defensively for four years. She became the 11th player in program history to top 100 career goals this season, and currently has 115 goals in 59 games played as a Seahawk. A mathematics and secondary education major, Kline is a member the Kappa Delta Pi and Pi Mu Epsilon honor societies, serves as secretary of the Math Club and is an ACE tutor/mentor.

Joining Kline on the all-conference team are Maddie Villareal ’20 (first team) and Gabrielle Majenski ’20 (third team). Villareal leads the Seahawks in goals scored (42) and ranks eighth in total points in the conference. Majenski made the switch from midfield to defense during the season, collecting 31 ground balls and causing 10 turnovers.

Salve Regina (7-9) travels to face Endicott College at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1 in the semifinal round of the conference playoffs.

Graduate student receives Boren Fellowship for study in Oman

Jacqueline Allee, a graduate student from Los Angeles who is enrolled in Salve’s master’s degree program in international relations, has been awarded a $20,000 Boren Fellowship to study in Oman during the 2018-2019 academic year.

Allee, who will graduate in May, will study Arabic at the Noor Majan Arabic Institute in Muscat. She is Salve Regina’s second Boren recipient, following Daniel Regan ’17, who won the undergraduate Boren for a year of study in Jordan in the academic year 2015-2016.

“I was in Washington D.C. when I received the email of my acceptance, and had visited the Pentagon and State Department that morning, hoping to myself to someday be working there,” Allee said. “So the news could not have come at a better time. I was ecstatic to the point of tears because this is a dream come true and I know how prestigious and competitive it is to be selected. It’s an incredibly gratifying feeling to know that Boren believes in my ability to master Arabic and I feel a responsibility to rise to that level.”

In Oman, Allee will be immersed in intensive (five hours per day) classes to study Modern Standard Arabic, the style of language that the U.S. government requires in order to be hired as a Language/Region/Culture Expert on the Middle East (LREC), which is her goal.

“I am interested in using Arabic as a vehicle in fostering diplomacy, such as in the foreign service, or in countering violent extremism in a media capacity in the intelligence community,” Allee said. She’s also interested in applying her Arabic skills to aid the Department of Homeland Security in creating a more robust vetting process for refugees entering the U.S.

Also while in Oman, Allee will be conducting preliminary thesis research on the country as a beacon of tolerance in the region and exploring its immunity to terrorism through interreligious dialogue. “A deeper understanding of these aspects can only be accomplished by spending a year abroad immersed there,” she said.

Allee received her undergraduate degree in sociology with a minor in Spanish from the University of California, Davis. She has also applied to Salve’s graduate program in humanities.

The David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are sponsored by the National Security Education Program, a major federal initiative designed to build a broader and more qualified pool of U.S. citizens with foreign language and international skills. The award is intended to fully fund the year of intensive language study abroad. In exchange for funding, Boren award recipients agree to work in the federal government for a period of at least one year.

“The National Security Education Program is helping change the U.S. higher education system and the way Americans approach the study of foreign languages and cultures,” said Michael A. Nugent, NSEP director.
