Senior business majors offering advice to underclassmen

All undergraduate students, especially first-year students and sophomores, are invited to attend “What I Wish I Knew,” a panel discussion featuring seniors from the Department of Business Studies and Economics.

Hosted by the Accounting and Finance Club, the discussion will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall. Seniors from each major in the business department will discuss topics they wish they knew more about as underclassmen.

The discussion will address the following questions:

  • Did you wonder when to start looking for an internship?
  • When do I apply to the combined bachelor’s/master’s program?
  • What should I be doing now to make sure I get the internship/job I want?
  • What would upperclassmen have done differently?

Majors in the Department of Business Students and Economics include accounting, business administration, economics, financial management, global business and economics, health care administration and management, and marketing.

Student organization profile: Seahawk Radio

Seahawk Radio is an organization for Salve Regina students who have an interest in learning the inner workings of broadcasting, radio, music and live DJ equipment.

Formerly known as WSRU, Seahawk Radio has an extensive history that goes beyond its official recognition as a club in 2008. The Seahawk Radio studio, located on the garden floor of Wakehurst, was constructed in 2000. However, the station didn’t broadcast online until 2007 due to an inability to obtain an FCC radio license. Seahawk Radio still broadcasts strictly through online streaming.

The Seahawk Radio executive board is:

  • Co-vice president: Sara Birse ’20
  • Treasurer: Isabelle Gillibrand ’20
  • Secretary: Nicole Perez ’19

Seahawk Radio recently underwent several changes, including an extensive studio renovation and major rebranding. With its new name and logo, Seahawk Radio looks forward to the future as a new and improved student organization. Despite these changes, however, its mission remains the same.

“Seahawk Radio’s mission is two-fold,” Rogers says. “We want to empower students so that they have a voice on campus, and radio helps people develop that voice.” In addition, she notes that Seahawk Radio “also wants to help community engagement through music at live events.”

Seahawk Radio provides music for numerous campus events each year, including the Campus Activities Board’s Friday Night Live series, SalveThon and Seahawk football games. The organization brings something to the table that is enjoyed by all: music. By doing so, Seahawk Radio can further enhance its ability to encourage community engagement.

Stoecker to discuss social change model of campus-community collaboration

Randy Stoecker, a consultant for the University’s faculty and community partner learning communities, will visit Salve Regina this week for a presentation open to the campus community and the general public.

“Hip Hop, Campus-Community Collaboration and the Old White Guy Professor” will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

A professor of community and environmental sociology at the University of Wisconsin Madison, Stoecker presents a social change model of campus-community collaboration that is thought-provoking and rooted in his own personal transformation over many years of working in the field of community engagement as a faculty collaborator and community organizer.

Stoecker’s most recent book, “Liberating Service Learning and the Rest of Higher Education Civic Engagement,” questions the prioritization and theoretical/philosophical underpinnings of the core concepts of service learning: learning, service, community and change. By “liberating” service learning, he suggests reversing the prioritization of the concepts, starting with change, then community, then service and then learning. In doing so, he clarifies the benefits and purpose of this work, arguing that it will create greater pedagogical and community impact.

His presentation is made possible by a grant funded by the Davis Education Foundation, established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after Mr. Davis’ retirement as chairman of Shaw’s Supermarkets.

Open enrollment period for health care benefits underway

Salve Regina’s open enrollment period for health care benefits, including dental, vision, AFLAC supplemental insurance and flexible spending and health savings accounts, is underway. The deadline for enrollment and changes is Wednesday, Nov. 15, except for AFLAC, which has been extended to Friday, Dec. 8.

Employees can make changes to the following benefits during the open enrollment period:

  • Health care: There are three health care plan designs for employees to choose from, including a high-deductible health plan with a corresponding health savings account. Tobacco-free discounts will still be available to all employees who complete a new affidavit before Nov. 15.
  • Dental: Employees can add or delete family members, sign up or drop coverage. Biweekly payroll contributions will remain the same for 2018.
  • Vision: Vision Service Plan provides in-network vision benefits such as frame and contact lens allowances.
  • AFLAC supplemental benefits: Employees may purchase or cancel a cancer care plan, personal accident plan, hospital protection plan or rider plan through payroll deduction on a pre-tax basis.
  • Flexible spending account: Employees may set aside pre-tax money to pay for health-related expenses not covered by their health care plan, including prescription deductibles and co-pays, eyeglasses, orthodontics and dentures. Employees may carry over $100 in unused funds at the end of each plan year.

An informational meeting about health savings accounts will be held at noon Wednesday, Nov. 8 in the Ochre Court state dining room. Employees interested in attending should register online by Friday, Nov. 3.

Residence Life hosting Housing Resource Fair

Students living both on and off campus are invited to attend the Housing Resource Fair, sponsored by the Office of Residence Life. The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16 in the O’Hare Academic Building lobby and from 1-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17 in the Wakehurst fireplace lounge.

“The Housing Resource Fair was instated to give students the opportunity to explore both their on-campus and off-campus housing options at Salve,” said Alex Ferri, area coordinator. “Students will be able to connect with Salve Regina departments and Newport community partners to help guide them on their housing journey.”

Salve Regina offices and Newport community partners scheduled to attend include:

  • Residence Life
  • Safety and Security

  • Newport Police Department

Not only will fair attendees be able to learn more about the on-campus housing selection process, but also information regarding off-campus housing. Cybersecurity expert to discuss “Hacked World Order”

How can we understand how states both large and small attack, surveil, influence, steal from and trade with each other in the digital age? Cybersecurity expert Adam Segal will explore this topic during “The Hacked World Order and Geopolitics of Cyberspace,” an upcoming lecture sponsored by the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.

Segal’s lecture will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall. To reserve a seat, visit the Pell Center’s Eventbrite page.

For more than 300 years, nation-states dominated international conflict and shaped world order, using all the instruments they had to make rules that best served their interests. Two decades ago, digital technologies started to shake up that long-standing system. In 2012, the U.S. government acknowledged that it had used these technologies to disrupt the Iranian nuclear program, and Russia and China conducted massive cyber-espionage operations. Cyberspace became a primary battlefield.

To make matters worse, cyber attackers often hide behind proxies. Many of the latest technologies are now in the hands of big companies who have interests that differ from those in government. Almost all our critical infrastructure is vulnerable to attack.

Segal is the Ira A. Lipman chair in emerging technologies and national security and director of the digital and cyberspace policy program at the Council on Foreign Relations. His book “The Hacked World Order: How Nations Fight, Trade, Maneuver and Manipulate in the Digital Age” describes the increasingly contentious geopolitics of cyberspace. His work has appeared in the Financial Times, The Economist, Foreign Policy, The Wall Street Journal and Foreign Affairs, among others. He currently writes for the blog Net Politics.

Task force hosting series of learning outcomes workshops

The expanded institutional learning outcomes task force has planned several workshops throughout October to which all Salve Regina faculty and staff are invited. Focus groups with students to address this topic will be scheduled at a later date.

The goal of these workshops is to discuss and draft measurable University-wide learning outcomes. Because every voice is important in developing institutional learning outcomes, the task force encourages all faculty and staff to attend a session.

Registration is encouraged as attendance is limited to 30 people per session.

Call for proposals: SRyou Student Exposition 2018

All undergraduate students are invited to submit proposals for the eighth annual SRyou Student Exposition, an all-day event scheduled for Wednesday, March 21, 2018. SRyou will consist of two concurrent sessions of presentations, performances and exhibitions featuring the work of students.

Students may submit proposals for any classwork, research, internships, service learning, study abroad or artistic, music or theater work they would like to showcase in the exhibition. Students can develop proposals as individuals, in groups or as representatives of campus organizations.

Through participating in this exposition, students benefit by:

  • Showcasing their academic, artistic and altruistic endeavors.
  • Developing professional presentation skills.
  • Enhancing their resumes.
  • Discovering the scope and diversity of the achievements of their peers.

Students may enter proposals through Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018. The proposal form is available online at salve.edu/sryou-student-proposal.

Annual conference focusing on gentrification and preservation

The Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural and Historic Preservation Program will hold its annual conference Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14. This year’s conference will center on the theme “Gentrification and Preservation: A Reappraisal,” and is free to all Salve students, faculty and staff.

The highly anticipated conference will explore the complicated and sometimes conflicted relationship between gentrification, preservation and community, and will feature position papers and case studies exploring this topic.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Lance Freeman, a professor in the urban planning program at Columbia University. His talk will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 in Ochre Court. For more information on Freeman’s career, visit the conference webpage.

Another event of interest is the guided tour segment, where members of the conference can choose from a variety of walking and site tours, including but not limited to:

  • The Newport Museum of Irish History
  • An African-American heritage walking tour of Newport

  • God’s Little Acre, an African and African-American colonial cemetery.

Roundtable focusing on Russian involvement in 2016 election

The Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election will be the subject of an upcoming roundtable discussion sponsored by the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.

“The Latest on the Russian Investigation” will be held at 11:45 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13 in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

Moderated by Dr. Jim Ludes, executive director of the Pell Center, the discussion will focus on the most up-to-date facts surrounding this investigation. Topics will include Russian advertisement on Facebook and other social media platforms; how to expose the activities of bots, trolls and other foreign actors; the role of the press/media; and what type of regulations may be needed going forward.

Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff. The Pell Center provides a free lunch. As space is limited, those interested in attending should RSVP to (401) 341-2927 or pellcenter@salve.edu.
