The Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery has announced the opening of BOSS Show 2016. BOSS – Best of Salve Students – is an annual survey of outstanding student artwork drawn from the full spectrum of visual art courses taught on campus.

This juried exhibition showcases creative achievement at all studio levels, from introductory to advanced, in a wide variety of media. This year’s show, which runs through Wednesday, Sept. 28, features photography, painting, drawing, ceramics and graphic design.

An awards ceremony and reception for the artists is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15 in the gallery. Students, faculty and the general public are all welcome. The Department of Art and Art History will also hold a new student orientation during the evening’s events.

The juror for BOSS Show 2016 is Norah Diedrich, executive director of the Newport Art Museum.

The gallery is handicap accessible with parking along Lawrence and Leroy avenues. Its exhibits are open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The gallery is closed on Mondays.

Students seeking study abroad and study away opportunities are invited to explore their options at the Study Abroad Fair from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14 in Ochre Court. Refreshments will be served and a variety of raffle prizes will be handed out.

Students from all academic majors and class levels will find options that fit their interests and needs. Program options span six continents and more than 40 countries and range from two-week, three-credit options to academic year abroad options. Service learning and internship options are also available.

At the fair, students can meet representatives from program providers for semester and yearlong programs and speak with study abroad alumni who can share their own overseas experiences. Salve Regina faculty who are leading short-term programs during summer 2017 will also be on hand to provide information regarding their programs in the Dominican Republic, England, Ireland, New Zealand and Charleston, South Carolina.

Sunday, Sept. 18: Sharkfest Swim

Volunteers are needed from 7-10 a.m. to check swimmers in and out at the start and finish lines during Clean Ocean Access’s fourth annual Sharkfest swim in Newport harbor. Volunteers are also needed from 8-10 a.m. to help with water safety using a kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Van transportation will be provided.

Saturday, Sept. 24: Alumni Day of Service

Current students are invited to volunteer alongside alumni, families and friends during the second annual Alumni Day of Service. Participants will volunteer from 10-11:30 a.m. at God’s Community Gardens (formerly known as Methodist Community Gardens), located at 200 Turner Road in Middletown. Transportation is not provided.

Sunday, Sept. 25: Cluny Country Fair

Volunteers are needed from noon to 4 p.m. to run small games and activities during Cluny School’s annual Country Fair. Van transportation will be provided.

Tuesday, Sept. 27 and Wednesday, Sept. 28: Bloodmobile

Volunteers are needed from noon to 6 p.m. to help with the Rhode Island Blood Center’s blood drive at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Two-hour shifts are available. Time slots are noon to 2 p.m., 2-4 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. Transportation is not available for this on-campus event.

Extensions and Extensions II, the University’s pre-professional dance companies, will hold auditions at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 in the Rodgers Recreation Center, Room 039. Students who wish to audition should be prepared to learn ballet, modern/contemporary and jazz combinations and perform in small groups. There is no need to prepare any material prior to the audition.

Directed by assistant professor Lindsay Guarino, Extensions is a full year commitment. The selected ensembles will have the opportunity to train at an advanced level of technique, work with nationally renowned guest choreographers and faculty, and perform on campus and throughout the New England region.

Salve Regina’s professional company, Extensions performs in two mainstage concerts at the Casino Theatre and at off-campus at events throughout the region. Extensions trains at an advanced level while working with a variety of guest artists who visit campus and set choreography in intensive-style workshops.

Extensions II was developed as a junior company in the fall of 2014 to provide performance opportunities to more dancers. Dancers will perform in select on-campus events and will take part in one of the two mainstage concerts at the Casino Theatre in addition to the Student Choreography Showcase.
