Members of the Salve Regina community are invited to join alumni, parents and friends for a wide variety of activities related to Fall Festival Weekend, which begins Friday, Oct. 2 and wraps up Sunday, Oct. 4. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to participate in any or all weekend events.

A highlight of the weekend will be the celebration of scholars and scholarship, scheduled for 11:15 a.m. Saturday in the O’Hare Academic Center. All are invited to learn more about O’Hare’s ongoing renovation and expansion project, tour the recently completed classroom wing, and interact with students and faculty from academic disciplines such as biology and biomedical sciences, business studies and economics, chemistry, nursing and social work.

All events are free of charge unless indicated otherwise. Due to the potential for inclement weather, members of the Salve Regina community are encouraged to monitor this post and social media for updates to the weekend’s schedule of events.

Friday, Oct. 2

• Festa Italiana – 5 p.m., Miley cafeteria, $10. Kick off Fall Festival weekend with dinner in Miley, featuring an Italian theme and cuisine.
• Friday Night Live: Fall festival – 8 p.m., Miley Hall garden level. Join the Office of Student Activities for caricatures, photo booth, candy apples, fried dough, cotton candy and more. Guaranteed to be a fun time for all.
• Hunger Concert – 8 p.m., Ochre Court, $5 for general admission, $3 for students and children. Rock out against hunger as you enjoy students’ musical performances while helping to support local soup kitchens.
• Young alumni homecoming – 9 p.m., O’Brien’s Pub. What better way to get the weekend started than a reception at O’Brien’s Pub? Complimentary appetizers and cash bar.

Saturday, Oct. 3

• 5th annual Kids Fun Run – 8 a.m., Rodgers Recreation Center. Children ages 2 and up can enjoy a fun run on campus. Registration is free and starts at 7 a.m. Pre-register online at salve.edu/run.
• 16th annual 5K Mansion Run and Walk – 8:30 a.m., Rodgers Recreation Center. Lace up your running shoes and sneakers for a fun run or walk through campus and the Ochre Point neighborhood. Registration opens at 7 a.m. Pre-register online at salve.edu/run.
• 12th annual Fall Festival awards ceremony – 10 a.m., Bazarsky Lecture Hall. The ceremony honors and acknowledges academic achievement, community service and those that live the University mission.
• Spirit tent – 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Rodgers Recreation Center. The spirit tent is your one-stop for student activities and Salve Regina Seahawk information.
• Celebration of scholars and scholarship – 11:15 a.m., O’Hare Academic Center. Celebrate enhancements to O’Hare, tour new learning facilities and view research conducted by students and faculty.
• Men’s soccer vs. Wentworth Institute of Technology – Noon, Brother Reynolds Field.

• Sigma Phi Sigma induction ceremony – 3 p.m., Our Lady of Mercy Chapel. Alumni are welcome to join in as current Salve Regina students are inducted into the 2015 Sigma class. Light refreshments will be served in the Mercy Center following the ceremony.

Salve Regina’s Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural and Historic Preservation Program, in partnership with the Newport Restoration Foundation, will host its annual conference in Ochre Court Oct. 22-24. All members of the University community are invited to attend, and conference organizers are offering a limited number of free registrations to Salve Regina students.

“The Remembered and the Forgotten: Preserving and Interpreting the Americas to 1820” will focus on the preservation and interpretation of pre-1820 buildings, objects and sites in the Americas, particularly in the fields of architecture, archaeology, material culture, museum studies and preservation planning/policy.

As a key center of global trade, Newport occupied a principal place in the American landscape in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, the legacy of this shared American past is materialized in buildings, furnishings, curated objects and archaeological sites. The preservation and interpretation of these resources poses challenges, but also provides opportunities to connect professionals and the public, and to improve our understanding of the “forgotten” experiences of groups whose voices are keenly absent in current histories.

In addition to a keynote address from Richard Guy Wilson, professor and chair of architectural history at the University of Virginia, the conference will include presentations, historic site tours, student lightning talks and networking opportunities.

A touchstone event of this year’s Fall Festival Weekend, scheduled for Oct. 2-4, is the 12th annual awards ceremony, which will recognize student scholarship recipients along with distinguished alumni and parents. The McKillop Library will recognize Banned Books Week, the national book community’s annual celebration of the freedom to read, by hosting a series of events Sept. 28 through Oct. 1. All sessions are free and open to the University community and the general public.

“Librarians are passionate about promoting the freedom to read,” said Dawn Emsellem Wichowski, assistant director of research and instruction at the library. “We’re committed to fighting censorship.”

Banned Books Week will focus on books that have been the target of efforts to censor or restrict them. Throughout the week, faculty members from across the University will lead “teach-out sessions” on censorship and free expression in their subject areas.

In addition, students, faculty and staff will present a public reading of banned or challenged books from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. Books that have been challenged include J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye,” Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” Stephen Chbosky’s “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are.”

The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will explore faith in public life during a roundtable discussion scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29 in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

A week after Pope Francis’ historic visit to the United States and in the aftermath of Kim Davis’ stand against same-sex marriage in Kentucky, this candid discussion moderated by Dr. Jim Ludes, executive director of the Pell Center, will focus on the relationship between private faith and public service.

Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff, and lunch is provided. As space is limited, those interested in attending should RSVP to pellcenter@salve.edu.
