Salve Regina students, faculty and staff are invited to sail the coastal waters of New England during a 10-day education-at-sea course aboard the Oliver Hazard Perry, Rhode Island’s new 200-foot tall ship.
“Teach, Lead, Manage: A Tall Ship Adventure” will run from May 27 to June 6. In addition to sail training, the trip features two additional educational components focused on building leadership, communication, management and teaching skills.
The first course uses the Process Communication Model to help college students, educators, support staff and supervisors learn to communicate more effectively and create productive learning environments. The second course will explore the use of film in designing, creating and delivering meaningful lessons for a variety of professional contexts.
Participants are not passengers – they will share fully in the responsibility of the ship’s operation, assisting 17 professional crew as the Oliver Hazard Perry sails to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, by Cape Cod and up the coast to northern ports.
“As a member of a tall ship crew, you will set course on an amazing adventure of personal development, team building and seamanship training that will impact every aspect of your personal and professional life,” said Dr. Kathleen Vespia, assistant professor of education, who will lead the program along with Roy Bergstrom, lead information technologist at the University of Rhode Island. “When you’re at the helm of a tall ship, you feel like you can take on the world.”
The program fee is $2,350, which includes on-board lodging and meals, seamanship and educational courses, official excursion and entrance fees, course materials and a certificate of completion.
The application deadline is March 15, with payment due by April 15.
