Summer study abroad application deadline extended

The Office of International Programs has extended the deadline for submitting summer study abroad applications. Students now have until Sunday, Feb. 15 to submit their applications.

This summer, Salve Regina will offer seven international and domestic programs including:

  • Argentina (May 24 to June 21)
  • Charleston, S.C. (May 31 to June 27)
  • China (May-June)
  • Ireland (May 23 to June 6)
  • New Zealand (May 18 to June 11)
  • Oxford, England (May 29 to June 27)
  • Rome, Italy (May 24 to June 26)

These short-term programs are led by Salve Regina faculty, some of whom have been working as study abroad leaders for several years. Students can earn between three and six credit hours that fulfill a variety of academic requirements, including major and minor credits, core complements and free electives.

Courses will be offered in several areas of study, including philosophy, art, mathematics, biology, nursing, literature, religion, Spanish, Italian, business studies, global studies, cultural and historic preservation and more.

Call for proposals: SRyou Student Exposition 2015

The planning board of SRyou: Student Exposition 2015 – an all-day event featuring the work of Salve Regina students – has issued a call for proposals.

Scheduled for Friday, March 20, the sixth annual SRyou will consist of two concurrent sessions of presentations, poster sessions, table displays, workshops and performances, along with a closing reception for all participants and attendees.

This year’s theme, “Grow What You Know,” celebrates the enrichment that SRyou provides for all members of the campus community, as well as the University mission’s focus on lifelong learning.

All undergraduate students are strongly encouraged to submit proposals, which will be accepted via the SRyou website through Feb. 16. For more information, email the SRyou student planning board at sryou@salve.edu.

“Sophomore Suppers” continuing throughout spring semester

Members of the Class of 2017 are invited to bring their questions to the table and meet with Salve Regina faculty members in the coming weeks during the “Sophomore Suppers” series. Suppers will be held Wednesdays from 5-6:15 p.m. in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

Sophomores can explore their interests and define their goals as they share dinner and ideas with professors and students from their academic major of interest. Learn what you can do with a specific major, minor or even double major.

Office sponsoring alumni basketball, ice hockey events

The Office of Alumni/Parent Programs is inviting alumni who played men’s basketball, women’s basketball and women’s ice hockey to reunite with their former teammates next weekend.

Hoopsfest

The alumni game for both men and women will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 in the Rodgers Recreation Center. Alumni are invited to stay for the men’s and women’s games against the University of New England, which will be held at 1 and 3 p.m.

Alumni will gather at O’Brien’s Pub at 7:30 p.m. for reminiscing and a night out in Newport. Complimentary appetizers will be served; cash bar. For more information, contact the alumni office at (401) 341-2627 or alumni@salve.edu.

Women’s Ice Hockey

Salve Regina holding multi-sport clinic for girls in grades 2-6

Members of the Salve Regina and local communities are invited to bring their daughters to the Rodgers Recreation Center Friday, Feb. 6 for the University’s seventh annual free multi-sport clinic for girls in grades 2-6, which is being held in celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

Student-athletes from many of Salve Regina’s women’s athletic teams will be on hand to demonstrate techniques and fundamentals of their respective sports to those in attendance.

The clinic begins at 6:30 p.m., and pizza will be served at 8 p.m. Participants may register on site beginning at 5:45 p.m. or complete the downloadable form and bring it with them on Feb. 6.

Since its inception in 1987, National Girls and Women in Sports Day has become the premiere occasion to celebrate the participation, success and accomplishments of girls and women athletes. What started in 1987 as a single event in Washington, D.C. to honor Olympic volleyball star Flo Hyman has grown into a nationwide celebration across all 50 states.

Steven Horwitz to present Atwood Lecture on the Great Recession

Steven Horwitz, Charles A. Dana Professor of Economics and department chairman at St. Lawrence University, will discuss “The Great Recession: A Failure of Government, Not Markets” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

Free and open to the public, Horwitz’s talk is part of the Atwood Lecture Series. Those interested in attending are asked to register at salve.edu/atwood.

The boom and bust of the last decade is often blamed on unregulated capitalism, greed run amok and/or irrational investors. With those presumed causes, it’s no surprise that the cure is often seen as more government regulation.

In his lecture, Horwitz will argue that the Great Recession is a classic example of an unsustainable boom initiated by misguided government policies, by both the Federal Reserve and Congress. Once we see how government caused the crisis, it becomes clearer why more government is not the cure. Horwitz’s lecture will conclude with a critique of stimulus spending and other activist proposals to speed recovery.

An affiliated senior scholar at George Mason University’s Mercatus Center and a senior fellow of the Fraser Institute, Horwitz completed his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics at George Mason. He is the author of two books, “Microfoundations and Macroeconomics: An Austrian Perspective” and “Monetary Evolution, Free Banking and Economic Order,” and he has written extensively on Austrian economics, monetary theory and history, macroeconomics, and the social thought of F. A. Hayek.

Two Seahawks earn conference honors

Congratulations to the following student athletes, who recently received honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference and the Eastern College Athletic Conference:

Women’s basketball: Meaghan Harden ’16

Harden was named player of the week after averaging 24.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game in a 1-1 week for the Seahawks. In a 66-55 triumph over Western New England University, she nearly had a double-double, with 23 points and nine rebounds. In a 56-53 setback against conference opponent Roger Williams University, she scored a game-high 26 points while shooting an impressive 91 percent from the line.

Women’s ice hockey: Danielle Phalon ’16

Phalon was named player of the week after helping the Seahawks win two games last week. She had two assists in a 4-2 win over the University of Massachusetts Boston and showed off her scoring ability with a hat trick in a 5-3 against Plymouth State University.

Winter Storm Alert: January 2015

  • The University is closed through Wednesday, Jan. 28.
  • Classes will resume and the University will reopen Thursday, Jan. 29.
  • This closures also applies to the Center for Adult Education in Warwick.

The University will provide ongoing updates through this post, Facebook, Twitter and salve.edu email. If necessary, the University will activate its SRU-Alert text messaging system.

Wednesday’s Openings

  • The bookstore will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Health Services will be open from 1-5 p.m.
  • McKillop Library will be open from noon to 8 p.m.
  • Miley Mart/Starbucks will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Rodgers Recreation Center will open at noon.

Wakehurst and Student Activities

Wakehurst will be open from noon to 10 p.m. Wednesday, with mail services open from noon to 3 p.m. Parking will be available in the Rodgers Recreation Center’s south lot.

All club meetings are canceled through Wednesday. Tickets for CAB’s ski trip to Loon Mountain will not go on sale Wednesday; they will be available beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3 in the Office of Student Activities. CAB’s mind reader, scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday, and the WSRU headphone disco dance, scheduled for 9 p.m. Friday, will be held as scheduled.

Campus Shuttle

On-campus transportation via the Ride Line will be available from 6 p.m. to midnight Wednesday. Off-campus transportation will not be available. Normal transportation activity will be resumed Thursday.

On-Campus Parking

All resident parking lots are now clear. Students are asked to move their vehicles back to their designated parking areas as soon as possible to assist with normal operations at the University on Thursday.

Safety and Security and the grounds crew would like to thank all students for their cooperation during the blizzard. The parking lots and campus pathways would not have been cleared as quickly without the assistance of students.

Parking Ban: Off Campus

Middletown: A parking ban is in effect through 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Campus Tours and Information Sessions

All campus tours and information sessions have been canceled through Wednesday. Regularly scheduled tours will resume Thursday, Jan. 29.

Counseling Services

Counseling Services will be closed Wednesday, and will resume regular hours on Thursday. Students who are experiencing a mental health emergency are encouraged to contact their area coordinator or Safety and Security at (401) 341-2325.

Drop/Add Deadline

The drop/add deadline for undergraduate students has been extended to Friday, Jan. 30.

Storm Tips

  • The Office of Safety and Security is open 24/7. The best number to reach them is (401) 341-2325. If you are unable to reach Safety and Security by phone, notify your RA or area coordinator.
  • If you experience a power loss, contact Safety and Security. Emergency crews from National Grid will be on-call during the storm and will restore power as soon as possible.
  • Charge your cell phone ahead of time. In the event of a prolonged power loss, this will ensure that you have cell phone usage.
  • You should never use candles, even if the power goes out.

Roundtable discussion focusing on freedom of speech

In the wake of the Charlie Hebdo shooting earlier this month, the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will explore the right to freedom of speech and expression during a roundtable discussion scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27 in the Ochre Court breakfast room.

The discussion will be led by Pell Center visiting fellow Carolyn Deady.

The gunmen who committed the massacre at the Paris offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo said that they had “avenged the prophet,” referring to the prophet Muhammed, who had been satirized by the magazine on numerous occasions. In the wake of the attack, “Je Suis Charlie” (French for “I Am Charlie”) became a slogan to symbolize those who stood in support of the slain satirists at Hebdo, and their right to freedom of speech and expression.

The discussion will explore questions such as: Should there be limits to freedom of expression? If so, what would those limits be? If not, will people exercising freedom of expression have to live in fear of reprisal?

Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff, and lunch is provided. As space is extremely limited, those interested in attending should RSVP to pellcenter@salve.edu.

The McKillop Library will once again sponsor “Library Lessons,” a series of workshops open to all members of the Salve Regina community, throughout the spring 2015 semester. Topics range from learning APA and MLA citation styles to avoiding plagiarism.

“Introduction to Today’s Library Services”

  • 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26 in the McKillop Library, Room 106

This workshop is designed to introduce students, faculty, staff and other interested members of the Salve Regina community to using the resources and materials available in the library. Topics include searching the catalog, borrowing from other libraries and using the resources from off-campus.

“How to Do Research”

This workshop will explain the American Psychological Association (APA) citation and format style that is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences.

  • 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the Center for Adult Education in Warwick

This workshop will explain the Modern Language Association (MLA) citation and format style that is most commonly used to cite sources within the humanities and liberal arts.

“Avoiding Plagiarism”

Plagiarism is a term that is heard over and over again, but do you really understand what it is, how to avoid it and what the repercussions of it are? This workshop will clarify why you need to cite sources and when and how to use a source appropriately. Topics covered will include paraphrasing, quoting and summarizing.

“Conducting a Literature Review”

  • 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24 in the McKillop Library, Room 106

A literature review is an account of what has been published on a topic by accredited scholars and researchers. This workshop will provide participants with the tools to find and analyze the relevant resources in a literature review.

“Introduction to RefWorks”

  • 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 in the McKillop Library, Room 106
  • 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25 in the McKillop Library, Room 106

This workshop will provide the basics on how to use RefWorks, an online research management tool, to manage and store variously gathered information and to generate citations and bibliographies.
