What parents and teachers need to know in order to raise literate and healthy children in a digital media world is the topic of an upcoming “Critical Issues in Education” presentation coordinated by ACE, the Aquidneck Collaborative for Education.

The forum, “Unraveling the Impact of Screen Time on Children,” will be presented from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 in the auditorium at the Community College of Rhode Island’s Newport campus. The event is free and open to the public; no reservations are required.

Leading the discussion will be Dr. Dana Osowiecki, clinical child and adolescent psychologist at the Center for Psychology and Learning in Providence, and Dr. Sarah Folta, professor and researcher with Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. James Betres of Portsmouth High School will moderate.

The Aquidneck Collaborative for Education is a unique educational partnership spearheaded and coordinated by Salve Regina’s Department of Education. Its purpose is to strengthen existing relations among the educational institutions, to promote education as a community value, to provide opportunities for professional development and instructional advancement, to share facilities and resources and to foster communication among the educational institutions and within the community.

The Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery has announced the opening of Justin Kimball’s “Pieces of String,” which features a series of color photographs exploring the minutiae of everyday life – a contemplation of our brief and humble legacies before they are cleaned up and cast to the wind.

The exhibit will be on display in the gallery Nov. 13 to Dec. 14.

The campus community and the general public are invited to attend an opening reception and artist talk on Thursday, Nov. 13. The reception will run from 5-8 p.m. in the gallery, while the artist talk will begin at 6 p.m. in the DiStefano Lecture Hall.

For four years, Kimball photographed in abandoned homes, hotels and buildings in the northeastern United States. For much of this work he accompanied his brother Doug, an auctioneer, into the houses of the deceased or dispersed. While Doug cleared these spaces of items for potential resale, Justin sought within them the evidence of an individual’s life. Photographing the smallest objects (a note, a box of hair pins, a stain on a pillow), he re-imagines their existence and relationship to the absent owners.

“I use the camera’s descriptive power and the photographic illusion of truth to create the narrative and inspire feelings about its subject,” Kimball says. “The resulting photographs are my perception of what happened in those spaces: Who lived there? What was hidden and what was seen?”

Kimball is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in Photography, the Aaron Siskind Individual Photographers Fellowship and a grant from the John Anson Kittredge Educational Fund at Harvard University. His photographs have appeared in DoubleTake, Harpers, pdn (Photo District News), Photo Metro and Picture magazines, and his work can be found in the Corcoran Museum of Art, George Eastman House, J. Paul Getty Museum, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), Portland (Oregon) Museum of Art and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

The gallery is handicap accessible with parking along Lawrence and Leroy avenues. Its exhibits are open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The gallery is closed on Mondays.

The “Reading Christian Classics” book discussion series will continue Thursday, Nov. 20 with Teresa of Avila’s “Interior Castle.” All members of the Salve Regina community, along with friends of the University, are invited to participate.

Sixteenth-century Carmelite nun and Christian mystic Teresa of Avila wrote “Interior Castle” as a spiritual guide to union with God. Inspired by a vision she received from God, the book also provides encouragements and advice for spiritual development.

The book is available online.

The series will continue throughout the 2014-2015 academic year, and participants are welcome to attend as many sessions as they wish. The remaining schedule is as follows:

• Thursday, Feb. 26: “The Power and the Glory” by Graham Greene
• Thursday, March 26: “Death Comes for the Archbishop” by Willa Cather (available online)
• Thursday, April 30: “No Man is an Island” by Thomas Merton

Discussions will be held in the McKillop Library’s special collections room beginning at 6:30 p.m. and will last about one hour. Each participant should furnish his or her copy of the book, read it prior to the session and come willing to share interpretations or comments.
