The city of Newport and T. Miozzi Construction are performing roadway improvements on Ruggles Avenue between Bellevue Avenue and the Cliff Walk. The project is expected to last several weeks, during which time access to Ochre Point Avenue from Ruggles Avenue will be limited.

Roadwork will take place between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students, faculty and staff should use alternate routes to campus to avoid detours and delays.

RIPTA has adjusted its bus routes due to the road construction. The temporary route began running on Wednesday, Oct. 29 and will continue until construction is completed.

Dr. Maureen Montgomery, Salve Regina’s first McGinty Distinguished Chair in History, will give the inaugural McGinty Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 30. “From Ochre Court to Downton Abbey: Trans-Atlantic Marriages and the British Peerage” will be held at 7 p.m. in the Casino Theatre.

Montgomery will revisit her original study of transatlantic marriages and the British peerage (first published in 1989) juxtaposed in the light of the current fascination with Julian Fellowes’ “Downton Abbey.” She will bring the story to Newport through the connection of May Goelet, daughter of the owner of Ochre Court, and her aunt Belle Wilson, both of whom married into the British peerage.

Established in honor of the late John E. McGinty, former trustee and parent of John W. McGinty ’01, the McGinty Chair furthers the educational advancement of undergraduate students in the areas of American studies, cultural and historic preservation and history. Montgomery was selected as the first chair holder following a nationwide search, and will serve through the 2014-2015 academic year.

“We are delighted that Salve enticed such a distinguished scholar from halfway around the world; Montgomery strengthens the University’s expertise in 19th century America and adds a refreshing international point of view,” said Sarah “Sally” McGinty, Mr. McGinty’s wife of 40 years prior to his passing in October 2011.

Montgomery, a longtime professor at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, has taught and served in a variety of positions there over the last 28 years. She has been program coordinator for American studies, gender studies and feminist studies, as well has head of the School of Culture, Literature and Society and head of the Department of American Studies.

She has published three books, including “Gilded Prostitution: Status, Money and Transatlantic Marriages, 1870-1914,” based on her doctoral dissertation at University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom, and “Displaying Women: Spectacles of Leisure in Edith Wharton’s New York,” the winner of a New York Society Library Award.

The author of numerous articles, chapters and papers on American studies, Montgomery has lectured extensively at universities in the U.K. and the U.S. A specialist in the Gilded Age, she was drawn to Salve Regina and Newport by its rich history during that era.

Dr. Anthony LoPresti and Dr. Timothy Neary, along with several Salve Regina students, will present “On the Road to Freedom” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29 in the McKillop Library. The group will share their experiences from their journey into the Deep South on the University’s first civil rights bus tour.

During the bus tour, which took place during spring break 2014, students explored key sites of the era and interacted with significant participants from the civil rights movement. The tour made stops in Washington, D.C.; Greensboro, N.C.; Atlanta, Ga.; Montgomery, Ala.; and Birmingham, Ala.

LoPresti is associate professor and chairman of the Department of Religious and Theological Studies. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University, a master’s degree from Boston College and a Ph.D. in theological ethics from Boston College’s Weston Jesuit School of Theology.

Neary is an associate professor in the Department of History and the coordinator of the American studies program. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University, a master’s degree from Loyola University Chicago and a Ph.D. in U.S. history from Loyola University Chicago.

In an effort to address the diverse health care needs of today’s veterans, Kim Ripoli, associate director of Rhode Island’s Division of Veterans Affairs, will present a public talk at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28 in the Young Building ballroom. “The Profile of Today’s Veteran” is sponsored by the Department of Nursing as part of its “Have You Ever Served” program.

Ripoli will examine how today’s veterans are a significantly changed population from previous generations. Today’s veterans tend to be younger, are more likely to be female, are more ethnically diverse and are more likely to have served for shorter periods of time than their predecessors. While many are surviving tremendous injuries on the battlefield, they’re still coming home with significant medical and mental health issues.

Ripoli, who earned a master’s degree from Salve Regina, is the first woman in Rhode Island to administer the Division of Veterans Affairs. In her position, she manages the division’s operations, coordinates mission execution and oversees more than 220 employees in the three branches (Veterans Home, Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Veterans Affairs) with a budget over $27 million.

She entered Naval service in February 1988 and in 1991 was deployed to Southwest Asia with the 1st Marines Expeditionary Force (1st MEF) during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. She was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for her actions during her deployment with Fleet Hospital 15.

In 1994, Ripoli joined the Navy Reserve, and affiliated with the Fleet Marine Force, 4th Force Service Support Group, 4th Medical Battalion, Surgical Company A. In 2003, she was mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom and attached to the 1st MEF, Forward Resuscitative Surgical Team No. 3 in Al Kut, Iraq. She received two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals for her actions in Iraq. Additional overseas deployments include Operation New Horizon (2000) and Operation African Lion (2005).

In 2007, Ripoli was assigned to the Pentagon, in the office of the assistant secretary of the Navy for manpower, policy and reserve affairs. During her tenure, she was assigned as an action officer working directly for the deputy assistant secretary on the joint Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs Senior Oversight Committee. In that role, she was the project manager for the creation of the online National Resource Directory.

Her military decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (eight awards), Army Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Kuwait Liberation Medal-Saudi Arabia, Kuwait Liberation Medal-Kuwait, Iraq Campaign Medal, and various service, unit and campaign awards.

The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will sponsor a roundtable discussion focusing on “Defining Feminism” at 11:45 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24 in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

Last month, actress and U.N. Women’s goodwill ambassador Emma Watson gave a speech on feminism and gender equality at U.N. headquarters in New York City. She was announcing the launch of U.N. Women’s “HeForShe” campaign, but she offered her own personal commentary on the misconceptions of feminism. The speech sparked conversations about feminism across the world, but the ultimate question remains: What does it mean to be a feminist?

During this roundtable discussion, participants will discuss the definition of feminism and how feminism has been framed through various perspectives. They will also discuss the implications of feminism’s misconceptions for gender equality.

Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff, and lunch is provided. As space is extremely limited, those interested in attending should RSVP to pellcenter@salve.edu.

A panel of experts in the field of preservation, including Richard Guy Wilson, will lead a public discussion on the state of restoration as part of “A Conversation in Preservation,” scheduled for 9-11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24 in Ochre Court.

Presented by the University’s Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural and Historic Preservation Program with support from Chancellor M. Therese Antone, RSM, the event is open to the public, although space is limited. To RSVP, call (401) 341-3172.

Richard Guy Wilson, the Commonwealth Professor’s Chair in Architectural History at the University of Virginia and longtime host of “America’s Castles” on A&E, will present remarks to introduce the morning. A Salve Regina honorary degree recipient, he specializes in the architecture, design and art of the 18th to 21st centuries both in America and abroad. Wilson was a visiting fellow at Cambridge University (England) in 2007. Since 1979, he has directed the Victorian Society’s 19th Century Summer School that has been located in Boston, Philadelphia and Newport. Wilson has served as an adviser and commentator for a number of television programs on PBS and A&E, including 67 segments of “America’s Castles.”

Alyssa Lozupone, a Salve Regina graduate who earned her master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania and is currently a fellow at the Preservation Society of Newport County, will discuss the importance of education for the effective practice of historic preservation in the United States.

Robert Russell, professor and coordinator of the CHP program, will present “Seeing Clearly: Old Houses, New Windows and Real Sustainability,” a talk about the value – both historic and economic – of retaining original fabric in a historic structure.

Wilson, Lozupone and Russell will then be joined on a panel by Diana Sylvaria, chairwoman of Newport’s Historic District Commission, and Justin Martin, preservation planner for the city of Providence, for a discussion. Owners of historic properties will have the opportunity to ask questions about historic district commissions, planning and zoning issues, and other issues as they relate to preservation.
