Members of the Salve Regina community, along with neighbors and friends of the University, are invited to participate in “Reading Christian Classics,” a book discussion series that will continue throughout the 2014-2015 academic year. Participants are welcome to attend as many sessions as they wish.

The schedule is as follows:

• Thursday, Sept. 25: “Return of the Prodigal Son” by Henri Nouwen
• Thursday, Oct. 30: “Orthodoxy” by G.K. Chesterton (available online)
• Thursday, Nov. 20: “Interior Castle” by Teresa of Avila (available online)
• Thursday, Feb. 26: “The Power and the Glory” by Graham Greene
• Thursday, March 26: “Death Comes for the Archbishop” by Willa Cather (available online)
• Thursday, April 30: “No Man is an Island” by Thomas Merton

Discussions will be held in the McKillop Library’s special collections room beginning at 6:30 p.m. and will last about one hour. Each participant should furnish his or her copy of the book, read it prior to the session and come willing to share interpretations or comments.

The McKillop Library will once again sponsor “Library Lessons,” a series of workshops open to all members of the Salve Regina community, throughout the fall semester. Topics range from learning APA and MLA citation styles to avoiding plagiarism.

“Introduction to Today’s Library Services”

• 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10 in the McKillop Library, Room 106
• 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16 in the McKillop Library, Room 106
• 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Center for Adult Education in Warwick

This workshop is designed to introduce students, faculty, staff and other interested members of the Salve Regina community to using the resources and materials available in the library. Topics include searching the catalog, borrowing from other libraries and using the resources from off-campus.

“How to do Research”

• 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Center for Adult Education in Warwick
• 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 in the McKillop Library, Room 106

Trying to find and decide on a topic can often be complicated and frustrating. This workshop will provide participants with the basics and tools to choose and investigate topics and create effective search strategies. Participants will learn how to search the premier database Academic Search Complete.

“Learn APA Citation Style”

• 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 at the Center for Adult Education in Warwick

This workshop will explain the American Psychological Association (APA) citation and format style that is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences.

“Learn MLA Citation Style”

• 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1 in the McKillop Library, Room 106
• 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 at the Center for Adult Education in Warwick

This workshop will explain the Modern Language Association (MLA) citation and format style that is most commonly used to cite sources within the humanities and liberal arts.

“Avoiding Plagiarism”

• 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8 in the McKillop Library, Room 106

Plagiarism is a term that is heard over and over again, but do you really understand what it is, how to avoid it and what the repercussions of it are? This workshop will clarify why you need to cite sources, when and how to use a source appropriately.  Topics covered include paraphrasing, quoting and summarizing.

“Conducting a Literature Review”

• 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 in the McKillop Library, Room 106

A literature review is an account of what has been published on a topic by accredited scholars and researchers. This workshop will provide participants with the tools to find and analyze the relevant resources in a literature review.

“Basics of RefWorks”

• 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 in the McKillop Library, Room 106

This workshop will provide the basics on how to use RefWorks, an online research management tool, to manage and store variously gathered information and to generate citations and bibliographies.

The South China Sea is a strategic waterway, a collection of uninhabited rocks and shoals, and the scene of rising international tensions between China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Japan and the United States.

With this in mind, the U.S. Naval War College’s Toshi Yoshihara will discuss China’s capabilities and intentions and the challenge facing U.S. policy in the South China Sea during a Pell Center lecture scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9.

The lecture will be held in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall. Reserve a seat for the lecture.

Yoshihara holds the John A. van Beuren Chair of Asia-Pacific Studies and is an affiliate member of the China Maritime Studies Institute at the U.S. Naval War College. Previously, he was a visiting professor in the strategy department at the Air War College. Yoshihara has also served as an analyst at the Institute for Foreign Policy Analysis, the RAND Corporation and the American Enterprise Institute.

He holds a Ph.D. from Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies and a B.S in foreign service from Georgetown University.

Yoshihara is the co-author of “Red Star Over the Pacific: China’s Rise and the Challenge to U.S. Maritime Strategy,” “Indian Naval Strategy in the Twenty-First Century” and “Chinese Naval Strategy in the Twenty-First Century: The Turn to Mahan.” He is the co-editor of “Strategy in the Second Nuclear Age: Power, Ambition, and the Ultimate Weapon” and “Asia Looks Seaward: Power and Maritime Strategy.”

The Office of Mission Integration has announced a call for poems on the theme of mercy. This opportunity is open to any Salve Regina student, faculty or staff member.

Poems can be in any style and may treat any aspect of mercy as an ideal, experience or practice. Each poem that is accepted will be published in an upcoming anthology. Poets will also have the chance to perform their work at a public reading to be staged during Mercy Week, which will be held in the fall 2014 semester.

The deadline for submissions to be considered for the anthology is Friday, Oct. 3. As submissions will be blind reviewed, poems should be submitted as an email attachment with no identifying information to mistol@salve.edu. Poets should include their name, email address and affiliation in the body of the email.

In the wake of the Robin Williams tragedy, the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will sponsor a roundtable discussion focusing on suicide at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9 in the Miley Hall private dining room.

Dr. John Tawa, assistant professor of psychology, will lead a discussion about suicide geared primarily for a college-aged population and supporting members of the campus community.

Tawa will begin with a brief presentation about risk factors associated with suicide, psychological correlates of suicidality, and early intervention and safety planning strategies. He will then answer questions and provide room for processing about the recent Robin Williams tragedy and related experiences.

Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff, and lunch is provided. As space is extremely limited, those interested in attending should RSVP to pellcenter@salve.edu.
